3 Knowing where, when and how to compete Digital product development is not just a process that begins with the CAD modeling of a new machine. Digital product development encompasses the entire range of development activities, including business planning. By providing a single source of product information in a format that makes sense for each individual user, digital product development optimizes decision making. For example, the Executive Dashboard, powered by Teamcenter Community software, provides senior management with real-time visibility into the business information they need.with an instant snapshot of current operations, managers can see whether critical workflows have been executed as planned, whether deliverables have been met and where the bottlenecks are.they can use these same tools to measure the success of completed programs. Did the programs meet cost and delivery schedules? Did they satisfy requirements for performance, safety, reliability and other compliance metrics? Digital product development brings the ability to implement requirements-driven design, where product requirements flow through the product development process and directly influence all product development decisions. In many cases, requirements-driven design begins with a request for proposal or quote. Let s look at how this is handled in a digital product development environment. Faster responses to customer requests When a bid request comes in, it is entered into Teamcenter and forwarded to the appropriate executive.the new request is color-coded for immediate attention. Most bids contain multiple documents such as functional specifications for the new machine, general terms and conditions of the project and sometimes other information such as a CAD file showing site layout. Using the Executive Dashboard to review current and historical data, the executive makes the decision whether or not to follow up on this RFQ.Then the executive assigns a routing slip (a standard template) to the relevant manager, asking the manager to perform a feasibility study and prepare a response for the RFQ. Once managers log in to their own workspace, they can view the feasibility analysis as a new task. In the managed development environment, the necessary information to support this request has been automatically routed to the manager, eliminating time that would otherwise have been wasted searching for it or waiting for someone to collect and send it.this is a major factor supporting lean design initiatives. As a result of these streamlined workflows and captured knowledge for best practices, the feasibility study is completed very quickly.the project is ready to move on to the next step, concept engineering. We have a lot of competition, so we always have to be one step ahead in terms of product development. 4 Concept engineering in the managed development environment The managed development environment keeps the project moving along and on schedule by ensuring that all necessary information automatically travels to the next participant in the process, at this point typically a product engineer. As individual engineers review this information, they can search the product information database, where they might find that a similar machine has been built in the past. Up to this point, it s possible that the engineer hasn t even worked in the CAD system. And if the job is simply a matter of configuring the machine to order, with no required engineering work, it would be unnecessary to enter the CAD system at all, thanks to Teamcenter s digital mockup capabilities. If the customer s request requires some conceptual design work, NX software allows the designer to get started quickly with a platform engineering approach. Platform engineering works with a template containing only the components and geometry that will become common to all variations of a machine. It provides an easily configured starting point that is enough for preliminary design investigations. Later, this template will also be used to drive the detailed assembly design. The platform engineering capability of NX differs from most CAD systems, which encourage designers to dive into details at an early stage, linking geometry, adding constraints and driving multiple dimensions and variables with little regard for downstream application of the model.with this uncontrolled approach, product-level issues only become apparent relatively late in the process when the digital mockup is well populated and changes become difficult and costly. Fast feasibility studies With NX, proposed machine layouts are captured in the Visual Editor, which allows the engineer to input different dimensional information and perform what if analyses. Once the driving parameters are entered, the engineer can propagate changes to the entire assembly in a controlled manner. For even greater control, NX can provide visual feedback of the before and after states, so designers can easily determine the impact of any changes. It could be that certain modules meeting the specifications and requirements for the new machine already exist in the database. It is easy for the engineer to find and attach them to the preliminary machine configuration because Teamcenter allows components and modules to be saved and searched based on functional requirements and purpose. Also, if the customer s request includes specifications created in a different product development system, such as an AutoCAD drawing of the proposed machine s location in a factory, Siemens open systems philosophy allows access to this data, regardless of its source, without the need for costly and risky data translation. With the feasibility stages complete, the engineer signs off and approves the next step in the development of this new machine. It is now time to begin the detailed design. Sauer-Danfoss, Inc. leverages the NX open application programming interface called NX Open to develop custom applications using many of today's most popular programming languages.the result is an environment that enables virtual product optimization. 2

5 Detailing the design After getting off to a rapid start with platform engineering and having confidence that the product direction is feasible, the next step is detail design. At Siemens, we recognize that in many companies product design fuels the entire development effort and, with this in mind, we continue to invest heavily in the ergonomics of our software to deliver the most intuitive user interface that can be used out-of-the-box. But we also make sure that NX has the flexibility to be tailored to the individual preferences of each designer. The NX user interaction model uses dynamic techniques for feature creation and editing, so designers can concentrate on creating the geometry they need without being forced to interact with obtrusive windows and dialogs.through this approach, NX offers productivity through ease of use that is typically associated with less sophisticated systems, while removing the traditional barriers to learning the kinds of advanced functionality that NX delivers. A significant advantage of digital product development is the ability to establish a managed parts library.this helps ensure that any component used in a design meets company and program requirements. Once components have been classified in a part dictionary, they can be identified and located quickly.this not only eliminates redundant component design efforts but also accelerates design cycle time and sourcing lead time by re-using preferred parts and existing supplier relationships. Inventory costs can also be reduced by minimizing part proliferation, lowering inventory levels and eliminating excess and obsolete inventory. Creating virtual assemblies NX offers proven assembly management tools that make working with the large and complex assemblies typical of machinery development easy and efficient. For example, a number of innovative selection and display options make it possible to eliminate clutter and quickly isolate focused design areas. With virtual assemblies, machine designers can optimize not just the fit, but also the function of moving components. NX offers a fully scalable solution ranging from simple motion studies with clash and clearance detection to full analysis of mechanisms with joint considerations, linked to structural analysis for loading studies. Because these simulation tools are fully integrated with NX, this motion analysis can be done as part of the design effort, rather than waiting until the design has developed to the point that engineering changes are costly in terms of both time and money. Another important part of digital product development is the use of NX DesignLogic, which lets engineers embed design knowledge and engineering rules into NX models, rather like having a builtin engineering handbook to monitor, check, advise and validate critical engineering features and components in each design. And, unlike most capabilities with this level of sophistication, they can do this on the fly, without resorting to custom programming. Once created, these knowledgeenabled design features can then be made available to the entire development team. DesignLogic allows companies to capture lessons learned for potential re-use, promoting the use of best practices without placing additional burdens on the designers. 6 Simulating and validating the design With digital product development, it is possible to simulate and validate products early in the design process, while the machine still exists only in software. NX Simulation Process Studio helps companies reduce their reliance on expert analysts for common design simulation tasks. Once analysts have created templates in Simulation Process Studio, the templates can be easily used by less experienced users.templates are instantly loaded and automatically executed as stored processes. Designers follow the prompts of a wizard-like tool to run the preferred simulation process. Moving simulation activities into the upfront design process allows more concepts to be reviewed, reduces direct costs associated with expensive physical prototypes and enables faster, more informed decisions.the result is better performing products and higher margins. When drawings are necessary, NX facilitates the process through the use of drag-and-drop drawing templates, simplified view creation, interactive previews and multiple options for displaying the model. NX drafting tools support all major national and international standards for engineering drawings. Once the views are in place, the designer can extract the product manufacturing information with a single command.this not only reduces the amount of annotation work required but greatly reduces the potential for errors by improving communication from engineering and design through manufacturing and inspection. Documenting the design With digital product development, the task of creating drawings takes advantage of all the product information that has been captured in previous stages. For example, while a machine is being designed, NX continually promotes the re-use of any information necessary for manufacturing and downstream applications. It does this through the use of advanced tools for creating smart models that include annotation and product characteristics such as material and surface finish embedded into the design data. In fact, Siemens leads the development of standards for 3D model annotation. This product manufacturing information (PMI) streamlines and simplifies the production of engineering drawings and can also promote the use of drawingless design processes. This is a good way to create a cost-effective mix of products and maximize revenue potential. XpresReview solves the problem of how to share multiple documents in a collaborative environment using the concept of packaged collaboration files. Designers create packages for suppliers containing items such as: lightweight representations of drawings and models, including all product manufacturing information; spreadsheets containing specifications; pdf files, image files and so on. Sending a package file from XpresReview is similar to creating a meeting request in Microsoft Outlook. An is automatically generated, and the package file is automatically attached to that .the recipient can then use the viewing, measuring and sectioning tools in XpresReview to interrogate the contents of the file, add some markup and comments along with additional files if necessary and return the whole package. The ease and openness of XpresReview allows extended participants (such as sales and marketing organizations, partners, suppliers and customers) to take part in the concept design process early and often without incurring the cost or complexity of lengthy review cycles. 5

8 Manufacturing in digital product development Machining applications are fully integrated in digital product development, leveraging existing design data for accurate and timely creation of production tooling and machining toolpaths.there is no need to translate, transfer or duplicate data and effort, which means there is less likelihood of introducing errors. NX machining applications incorporate highly automated toolpath programming techniques that can reduce programming time by up to 90 percent compared to traditional methods. NX also provides fully integrated tools for simulation and validation of the entire machining process.the solution is scalable from toolpath display, through dynamic material removal, to full machine simulation.
