3 Saron Saron is situated 80 km to the North of Paarl Population: Total 6002 (2001 Census) There are 1877 erven Annual water demand: Total kl Demand per capita: 354 liters/person/day (Average for Drakenstein 240liters/person/day) Main water sources: from the Leeu River, North- East of the town

4 Water Demand Management Strategy Purpose of the Project: To raise the awareness of poor and indigent residents who have high water consumptions Unacceptably high levels of Minimum night flow (12-14 l/s) (UAW 34 %) To audit the plumbing of properties and identify leaks To identify other reasons for high water consumption And to provide a bill of quantities as an input into leak a repair project

7 DWAF awarded R 2,000,000 for leak repairs poor areas We also won R 500,000 for a award from DWAF Saron has a very high minimum night flow and we decided to take it as a pilot project We started the process in August 2008

Appoint a service provider Duties include: - Interact directly with the owner/tenant of properties - Complete an audit form which will identify where there are water leaks and identify other causes for high water consumption - Provide owner with the following information verbally and in pamphlet form - Water saving tips - How to identify water leaks - How to repair basic water leaks

Process The report was accepted by Council in September 2008 The tender process were started in October 2008 After a delay as a result of the waiting period, it was awarded to Shamrock Plumbers, in mid December Shamrock Plumbers started in mid January with the audit and visit each property and gave notice to the owner of what they intend doing The contractor started with the repairs in February Some of the leaks they found are illustrated in the following slide

33 Conclusion Project is a success The project has resulted in a savings of 4.77l/s or 17.2m³ per hour (and for 2010/2011 a saving of 6.7l/s or 120Ml/annum was achieved) Postponed the need for an additional reservoir 83.4% of properties needed repairs 1,352 taps were replaced. 64.2% of the properties repaired had pipe leaks Shamrock is back on site due to expenditure under estimations by themselves Sustainability measures still to be put in place and is an ongoing process.
