The reinforced fiber cement panels comply with ASTM C1186, Type A. The Nichiha Architectural Wall Panels, Vintage Wood and Empire Block Panels (also denoted by EX Series panels) are shiplapped on either two or all four edges (see Table 1). The Sierra Premium Smooth Boards (also denoted by M Series boards) simulate wood planks and have square edges that allow the panels to lap. The Sierra Premium Shake Boards (also denoted by W Series Boards) simulate wood shakes. The panels and boards have nominal dimensions as noted in Table 1. Sierra Premium Boards are available in a primed condition. The top and right ship-lapped edges of the EX Series panels contain a continuous 1 / 4 -inch (6.3 mm) bead of factory-applied Nitta Gelatin, hot melt caulk, Type H-674BB, to provide a sealant between panels. 3.2 Accessory Materials: Clips: The clips are made from anodized aluminum or stainless steel, and have a minimum thickness of 0.04 inch (1.02 mm). Tables 2, 2A, and Figure 4, provide detailed information on Nichiha clips Starter Track and Sealant Backers: Accessories such as a starter track and sealant backers are provided by Nichiha U.S.A. The starter track for EX Series panels is made of galvalume and is 120 inches long by 2 3 / 4 inches high by 0.02 inch thick (3.0 m by 70 mm by 0.08 mm). The single-flange sealant backer is 3 / 8 inch (9.3 mm) wide and 6 1 / 2 feet (2 m) long. The double-flange sealant backer is 3 / 8 inch (9.3 mm) wide and 10 feet (3 m) long. Refer to Table 2A. 4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION 4.1 General: The manufacturer s published installation instructions and this report must be adhered to and a copy of the instructions and this report must be available at all times on the jobsite during installation. The wall framing and sheathing must be covered with an approved water-resistive barrier in accordance with the applicable code. Single-flange sealant backer must be used at locations where the Nichiha EX Series panels butt against door and window trim, butt against inside corners, or butt against corner trims. All gaps must be filled with exterior-grade sealant conforming to ASTM C920. Trim and corners must be installed as required by the Nichiha installation instructions. 4.2 Nichiha Architectural ( EX Series) Wall Panels: General: The panels must be attached through the sheathing to the framing in accordance with Table 2 of this report using Nichiha panel clips which are supplied with the panels. Table 3 provides guidance on selection of the clips for various panel configurations and sheathing. The clips must be attached through the sheathing and water- ICC-ES Evaluation Reports are not to be construed as representing aesthetics or any other attributes not specifically addressed, nor are they to be construed as an endorsement of the subject of the report or a recommendation for its use. Flashing and accessories for the panels must be installed as required by the Nichiha installation instructions and the applicable code. The panels must be applied horizontally commencing from the bottom course of the wall. The J-shaped starter track must be fastened at a maximum of 16 inches (406 mm) on center with corrosionresistant with 0.19-inch (4.83 mm) shank diameter. Fasteners must penetrate wood studs or sill plate a minimum of 1 inch (2.4 mm) [ 1 / 2 inch (12.7 mm) for metal studs]. The panels must begin a minimum of 6 inches (12 mm) above finished grade; panel spacing above hardscapes must be in accordance with the manufacturer s published installation instructions. The first panel is inserted into the starter piece and secured to the framing using the appropriate clips as noted in Table 3 of this report. Additionally, a Short Panel Clip is inserted at the bottom of all vertical panel joints. Vertical joints of 72-inchlong (1829 mm) panels must be ship-lapped and held in place with joint clips as described in Table 3. Vertical joints of 72-inch-long (1829 mm) panels may fall between two studs, provided Long Joint Clips (JEL61 or JEL1) are used to bridge the studs. The vertical joints of 120-inchlong (3048 mm) panels must fall on studs/furring strips. To resist the transverse loads, the panels must be installed in accordance with Sections and of this report Transverse Load Capacity: Wood Stud Construction: Wood studs, nominally 2-by-4 and stud grade with a specific gravity of 0.42 or greater, must be spaced no greater than described in Table 3 and must be covered with minimum 7 / 16 -inchthick (11.1 mm), exposure 1, rated sheathing complying with PS-2 and fastened to the framing per the applicable code. The Nichiha EX Series Panels must be installed horizontally, and fastened through the sheathing into the framing with a series of Nichiha panel clips which are installed at the top of each panel at each stud. The clips must be fastened through the sheathing into the studs, using corrosion-resistant fasteners, as described in Table 2. With the Nichiha panels seated properly in place, the Long Joint Clip (JEL1/61) must be inserted at the top of the vertical panel joint and fastened directly to the studs. The allowable loads for different panel thicknesses and stud spacings are listed in Table Steel Stud Construction: Steel studs having a minimum yield strength of 33 ksi must be minimum No.18 gage, 3 / 8 -by-1 / 8 inch (92.1 by 41.3 mm), C-shaped metal studs and must be spaced a maximum of 16 inches (406 mm) on center. The 1 / 2 -inch-thick (12.7 mm) gypsum sheathing must comply with ASTM C1396. The Nichiha panels must be installed horizontally, with each panel fastened through the gypsum sheathing to the steel studs with a series of Nichiha panel clips as set forth in Table 2, which are installed at the top of each panel at each stud. The clips must be fastened to the studs using one No.10 by 1 1 / 2 -inch-long (38.1 mm) sheet metal, or as described in Table 2. The allowable loads for different panel thicknesses and installation configurations are listed in Table Sierra Premium Boards: General: Spacing of wood studs must not exceed 16 inches (406 mm) on center. The wood studs must have a minimum specific gravity of 0.42 and must be covered with minimum 7 / 16 -inch-thick (11.1 mm), exposure 1, rated sheathing complying with PS-2 and fastened to the framing per applicable code. The starter strip must be installed as required by Nichiha s installation instructions and the applicable code. The boards must be applied horizontally commencing level with the bottom of the wall sheathing or mudsill. See Figure 3 of this report. The starter strip may be a 1 / 3 -width-strip cut horizontally from a Sierra Premium a 1 / 2 -inch (12.7 mm) Nichiha FS1010 shim, pressure-treated lumber or other suitable material (see manufacturer s published installation instructions). The first course of the boards must be installed horizontally with the bottom edge overlapping the starter strip by 1 / 4 inch (6.3 mm). There must be a minimum 1 1 / 4 -inch (31.8 mm) overlap on the horizontal joints between courses. The boards must be fastened through the sheathing to each stud with a corrosion-resistant, No. 8, ribbed, bugle-head [0.37-inch (9.3 mm) head diameter] screw. Alternatively, a hot-dipped galvanized, full-round head [minimum inch-diameter (.61 mm) head] siding nail may also be used. Fasteners must penetrate into a wood holding member a minimum of 1 inch (2.4 mm). All vertical joints must fall on studs or solid wood framing. When boards are installed over OSB/plywood sheathing using nails, board ends must be secured with a corrosion-resistant, No. 8, ribbed, bugle-head screw at each butt joint. Sierra Premium 1 / 2 -inch-thick (12.7 mm) boards may be installed without 7 / 16 -inch-thick (11.1 mm) rated sheathing. The panels attached to wood studs are constructed as noted in this section.
