3 Definition Dual Seal Equivalent refers to a group of sealant systems used to make IG units that have structural and performance properties comparable to dual seal IG units.

8 History of DSE 1992: PPG introduced Intercept spacer technology with HMB sealants. 1994: PPG started asking sealant suppliers if they could make a one-part sealant that would perform as well or better than traditional dual seal systems. The answer was maybe. 1995: Prototype materials available. 1996: PPG coined the term Intercept DSE Unit and established criteria for qualification of DSE sealants. 1997: DSE materials available to marketplace. Today, the term DSE is used throughout the industry.

9 Requirements for DSE One part curing sealant Structural equivalency o Must pass CSTB (French) shear test at 50 C (122 F). o Must be equal to or better than traditional dual deal units. o Must pass off-vertical storage for 1 month. Weathering durability o Min. 85% must pass ASTM E-773/774 test to CBA level. Argon retention o Max. allowable argon loss rate of 1% per year

31 3 Factors That Control Performance Geometry or configuration of the edge seal system. Location of sealants relative to loads. Structural properties of the edge seal materials and components. Strength and stiffness of components. The dynamic MVTR and argon permeation rate of the edge seal system. Do the MVTR and argon permeation rates change under load?

33 Structural Attributes High strength sealants do not cavitate or string like PIB. No creep or cold flow under shear loads. They maintain their strength at elevated temperatures.

38 DSE, TDSE, DSA IG Edge Seal Systems They are load bearing structural systems. They are moisture vapor barrier systems that maintain low MVTR during dynamic loading. They are argon barrier systems that maintain low argon permeation rate during dynamic loading. They meet or exceed performance of traditional dual seal IG construction.
