5 HOW TO USE YOUR NEW TILT-DECK ESTIMATING GUIDE FROM INSUL-DECK, LLC. 1. READ THE DISCLAIMERS AND LEGAL INFORMATION PAGES. 2. TILT-DECK installations require the use of a licensed professional engineer. TILT-UP construction methods are very dangerous and should only be performed by experienced professionals. 3. Read the WHAT IS TILT-DECK section and learn the history of TILT-DECK. 4. First, familiarize yourself with the building project and the area where it is located. There might be special considerations that affect the job such as not having enough room to cast the tilt panels. The project might be located an earthquake zone or an area prone to hurricanes and tornados. Also consider, what load conditions will be placed on the wall? Armed with this information, you will make better bids and alert potential clients to facts or concerns they might not have known about prior to construction. 5. Look at your blueprints and select the tallest unsupported wall section that needs to be finished and insulated. This will tell you how tall of a wall you are dealing with. Now consult with your engineer of record, you need to find out what wind pressure to apply to your walls. Please note that wind pressure is not equal to wind speed. 6. Now that you have selected a wall height and wind pressure, go to the section titled REINFORCEMENT ESTIMATES SECTION. First read the estimating guidelines. On the top right of each page is a line in bold type with the panel thickness and concrete depth in inches. Please not that only the 3 smallest TILT-DECK panel heights have been designed, this does not mean that you can not use one of the larger panels. Start with the page labeled WALL SIZE Select the proper row and column containing your desired height and wind pressure condition. The two boxes where your desired row and column intersects contain a range of rebar that your local engineers design is likely to fall between. One box is the minimum area of steel, the other the maximum area of steel. Repeat this procedure for both tables. The top table is reinforcing for the windward side of the wall panel. The lower table is the reinforcing for the leeward side of the wall panel. Please refer to the sketch located in the estimating guideline notes. If you find yourself inside one of the blocks labeled N/A for the reinforcing in either windward or leeward directions, then you need to move to the next larger TILT-DECK reinforcement estimates page. (Please note that these tables are only reflecting reinforcement to create structural wall panels. Other considerations such as; lifting inserts, embeds, floor connections, foundation connections, and openings will be determined by local codes.) Now you know what range of rebar to expect your local engineer to design into your TILT-DECK project. 6 7. To decide how much concrete will be required, first you need to find out how many square feet of wall you are planning to use. This can generally be found on the drawings or by using some basic math: Area = Length of walls x the wall Height. Next go to the GENERAL INFORMATION SECTION. Find a table named ESTIMATING TILT-DECK COVERAGE FT^2 FOR 1 YD^3 OF CONCRETE POURED. The values you will find are how many square feet of TILT-DECK one cubic yard of concrete will cover. On the left side you will find two columns: Select the panel thickness you are estimating with. Now go across to the column that has the concrete slab depth you are using. This value is how many square feet that one yard ^3 of concrete will cover. Take the total square footage of the walls you are building and divide by the number found in this table. This will give you the number of cubic yards of concrete required. 8. For some general information that could be useful when estimating, the GENERAL INFORMATION SECTION contains two more tables that are used the same way as the concrete coverage table. The first table will tell you how much the wall system will weigh in pounds per square foot. The second table will tell you the estimated thermal resistance of the wall you selected. 9. In the DETAILS SECTION of this manual, you will find 30 to 40 drawing details to assist you and your client visually in understanding what is going to be built and how it will work. 10. For more information on how to estimate specialized projects or situations, please feel free to contact the technical support personnel at INSUL-DECK LLC. 8 2. WHAT IS TILT-DECK? TILT-DECK is an exclusive product of INSUL-DECK, LLC. Piero Cretti invented the INSUL-DECK form system in Europe in 1978 to reduce a concrete floor s weight and increase efficiency in the building process. INSUL-DECK became available in United States in The use of the form system for Tilt-Up walls is applied since 2004 and marketed under the name of TILT-DECK. TILT-DECK is a lightweight form used to create reinforced concrete walls. This form is lightweight in two ways: first, two people can handle each form; and second, it reduces the weight by replacing concrete with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), producing a T-beam shape instead of the conventional flat slab. This reduces the weight significantly while maintaining its strength. The TILT-DECK forms also contain two large service chases or openings to place utilities such as conduit and plumbing. Additionally, wall finishing can be attached directly to the TILT-DECK forms. TILT-DECK uses a patented manufacturing process to create a reinforced concrete form. By using a continuous molding process, TILT-DECK is capable of providing forms with continuous metal furring strips in whatever length is requested. Starting at the beginning of the process, TILT-DECK forms are made with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), a petroleum-based product with excellent insulating properties. Initially EPS beads, roughly the size of a grain of sand, are delivered to our plant. We process the EPS beads with steam, expanding them to about half of their final volume, and place them in a large hopper (or mesh bag) for a day to stabilize. This is called Pre-Expanding. Each TILT-DECK panel contains two continuous metal furring strips. These furring strips are perforated, meaning that they have holes punched in them. This will allow the Expanded Polystyrene to pass through the furring strips giving them a much stronger bond to the Expanded Polystyrene. The metal furring strips come to us in coils approximately a half-mile long. The metal coil is placed on the back of the production machine and rolled into the Z shape prior to entering the mold. The back of the mold will slide back and grab the metal strips, then force everything forward. This leaves a six-foot gap inside the mold with only the metal strips in place. The back of the previous panel section acts as the front of the mold. The mold is then completely filled with the half-expanded EPS, and steam is applied to the mold from the top, bottom and sides and internally by six steam pipes attached to the back of the mold. This causes the beads to expand again, this time to their full size. However, there is not enough room for the beads to fully expand inside the mold, so the beads fuse together in and around our metal strips and to the section of panel acting as the front of the mold. The tubular voids left by the steam pipes become the integrated utility chases. This process is then repeated until the desired panel length is reached, at which point it is cut to length by a large radial saw. Finally, the panels are loaded in a tractor trailer and shipped to the job site. 9 The TILT-DECK production line is capable of making about 3200 Ft^2 of panels in one eight-hour shift. Because the TILT-DECK system is custom-made for each order, it is difficult to find other jobs that can accommodate the customized panels. For this reason, panels are not produced until we have a signed cut-list of panels to manufacture and payment is received. This also relieves you of any inventory cost that you would otherwise incur from storing our wall system. 11 INSUL-DECK, LLC s Estimating Guidelines 1. TILT-DECK forms are used to create a reinforced concrete Tilt-Up wall. This type of wall must be designed by a licensed professional engineer in accordance with all applicable codes and laws. 2. Information contained in these tables is for estimating purposes only. 3. The information only relates to the structural capacity of the wall. Other considerations such as lifting reinforcement, temperature reinforcement, et cetera, are not included in these tables. 4. Your local engineer of record will need to consider all issues associated with use of a Tilt-up wall. For instance, but not limited to,: lifting, connections to the foundation, connections to the roof, doors openings, window openings, shear reinforcing, negative moment reinforcing, and any other local environmental conditions like earthquake and hurricane zones. 5. TILT-DECK panels are used as a forming system and can be, if needed, removed after the concrete has cured. They do not provide structural support after the concrete has cured. Fire resistance will come from the concrete itself and any fire barrier that is mechanically attached it. 6. TILT-DECK is available in the standard sizes of 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12-1/2 overall thickness with a 2 thick bottom wing. Currently, however, estimating tables have only been made for the 7, 8, 9 thick panels. 7. All heights or spans are considered from center of support to center of support. 8. TILT-DECK forms can be used without a proper casting bed. If TILT-DECK forms are not cast on a casting bed or on a flat-graded surface then they must be supported by an adequate shoring system designed by a licensed professional engineer using ACI 347 Guide to Formwork for Concrete. Do not remove the shoring until the concrete has reached its desired compressive strength or you have the consent of the engineer of record. Please consult the INSUL-DECK Estimating guide for conventionally reinforced concrete floors. 9. The information contained in these tables does not replace professional engineering judgment. 10. ACI and ACI committee 551 Tilt-Up design guidelines were used in the creation of these tables. 11. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is correct and accurate; however, INSUL-DECK, LLC is not responsible for misuse or misrepresentation of this information or improper installation in the field.
