PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: This Certificate relates to Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof tile underlays. These products are manufactured from polypropylene mesh reinforced polyethylene film for use as underlays on ventilated pitched roofs. The ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N are microperforated, the ATX Master is not micro-perforated and has a non-woven polypropylene fabric on the bottom surface. USE: The products are used as underlays for ventilated pitched roofs. They prevent the ingress of wind-blown rain and snow. MANUFACTURE AND MARKETING These products are manufactured by: GRILTEX S.A. 66, rue Leruste B.P. 56 F Wattrelos Cedex Telephone: Fax: PART 1 CERTIFICATION 1.1 ASSESSMENT In the opinion of the Irish Agrément Board (IAB), Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof tile underlays are satisfactory for the purpose defined above, and can meet the requirements of the Building Regulations 1997 to 2002 as indicated in Section 1.2 of this Certificate. 1.2 BUILDING REGULATIONS 1997 to 2002 Requirement: D1 & D3 - MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP D3 Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof tile underlays, as certified in this Irish Agrément Board Certificate, are proper materials, fit for the intended use (see Part 4 of this certificate). 2 accordance with this Irish Agrément Board Certificate meet the requirements for materials and workmanship. PART A - STRUCTURE A1 - Loading Tests indicate that a roof incorporating Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N, and ATX Master roof tile underlay can meet the requirements, provided the installation complies with the conditions set out in Section 2.4 and Part 3 of this Certificate. PART B - FIRE SAFETY B4 - External Fire Spread ATX Master roof tile underlays will not prejudice the external fire resistance of roofs as indicated in Section 4.1 of this Certificate. PART C - SITE PREPARATION AND RESISTANCE TO MOISTURE. C4 - Resistance to Weather and Ground Moisture ATX Master roof tile underlays can meet the requirements when installed as indicated in Parts 2 and 3 of this Certificate. PART F VENTILATION F2 - Condensation in Roofs ATX Master roof underlays which provide water PART 2 vapour permeability of the same order as quoted as a minimum for conventional roof tile underlays in BS 5534: Part 1: 1997 Code of Practice for slating and tiling - Design, and hence, movement of moisture vapour can take place through the underlay. The design guidelines contained in the Technical Guidance to Part F of the Building Regulations 1997 and BS 5250: 1989 (1995) Code of Practice for control of condensation in buildings, sections to must be met when installing this product. Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlay should be treated as an impermeable underlay when considering the ventilation requirements of the roof. PART L - CONSERVATION OF FUEL AND ENERGY L1 - Conservation of Fuel and Energy Based on the measured vapour resistance of Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof tile underlays, insulation can be installed at ceiling level to meet the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations 1997 to Where the ceiling has to be fixed to the soffit of the rafters and insulation is to be fitted between the rafters as in dormer roof construction, ventilation should be arranged for as shown in Diagram 6D of the Technical Guidance Document to Part F of the Building Regulations 1997 to 2002 ; in these circumstances a vapour control layer must be installed at the warm side of the insulation. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION AND CONTROL DATA 2.1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This certificate relates to Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlay which are designed for use as an unsupported underlay for tiled or slated ventilated pitched roofs, to protect the roof from the ingress of windblown rain, dust and snow when constructed in accordance with I.C.P. 2: 2002 Irish code of practice for slating and tiling. Forst roof underlays are manufactured from a laminate of polypropylene mesh reinforced polyethylene film. The ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N are micro-perforated, the ATX Master is not microperforated and has a non-woven polypropylene fabric on the bottom surface. The Forst ATX Classic N is black in colour. Product Range The underlay is available in the following grades and sizes: Table 1. Minimum overlaps Roof Pitch Horizontal lap (mm) Vertical lap (mm) MANUFACTURE Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N roof underlay is produced by an extrusion process from polyethylene granules. Polypropylene mesh is bonded between extruded polyethylene films to complete the sheet manufacture. The Forst ATX Classic I then has a flame retardant applied to it. The sheet is microperforated at a rate of 5000 perforations per square metre, slit to width and rolled. The ATX Master is manufactured by a similar process but has an additional layer of non-woven polypropylene fabric laminated on the bottom surface. It is thus a four layer product and it is not micro-perforated Quality Control Quality control checks include visual inspection and checks on dimensions, tensile strength, roll weight and water vapour permeability. 2.3 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND MARKING Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N roof underlays are supplied in 50m rolls and the ATX Master in 30m or 50m rolls. Each roll lists the manufacturer's name, product description, IAB identification mark, IAB Certificate number and contains instructions on storage and installation. Rolls may be stored on end or laid flat and should be kept under cover. Care must be taken to avoid contact with solvents and with materials containing volatile organic components such as coal tar and timbers newly treated with creosote. The rolls must not be exposed to a naked flame or other ignition sources. 2.4 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE General Forst ATX Roof Underlays must be installed and fixed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, a copy of which should accompany each roll and the recommendations of ICP 2: 2002 Code of practice for slating and tiling and BS 5534: Part 1: 1997: Code of practice for Slating and Tiling- Design. Installation can be carried out in all conditions normal for roofing work Installation Installation of Forst ATX Roof Underlays can be carried out in all conditions normal to pitched roofing work. In roof construction it is important to remember that Forst ATX Roof Underlays are the second line of defence in excluding water penetrating the roof from the external environment. For this reason the following list of criteria must be met to comply with the requirements of this certificate. Ensure that: Forst ATX underlays are correctly installed and not damaged. Where Forst ATX underlays become damaged for whatever reason, it is imperative that it is suitably repaired with a new piece of the same material or a self-adhesive bituminous strip if the damage is minimal. During the operations of installing the roof underlays it is imperative that persons working on the roof do not use Forst ATX roof underlays for supporting themselves or the slates/tiles independently of the roof. Overlaps of the Forst ATX roof underlay must be provided in accordance with the minimum dimensions given in Table 3 of this certificate. Batten gauges should not exceed that recommended by the tile/slate manufacturer for the particular tile/slate being used. Moisture content of battens at time of fixing does not exceed 22%. Where underlay overlaps do not coincide with a batten, consideration should be given to either including an extra batten at the overlap or increasing the underlay overlap to coincide with the next batten. Where timbers on roofs have been treated with wood preservative due to high moisture content of timbers, it is essential that manufacturer's guidance be sought in relation to chemical attack on the roofing underlay.

4 When tacking Forst ATX Roof Underlays to the rafters it is recommended that a 3mm diameter X 20mm long extra large head felt nails of copper, aluminium alloy or galvanised steel be used. It is important that all tacking nails be covered by the overlap of the next underlay course so that the minimum overlap is maintained between the tacks and the lower edge of the overlap underlay. Forst ATX Roof Underlays are not suitable for use in flat roof construction. Where hips and valleys occur on roofs they should be covered with an additional layer of underlay overlapped at least 350mm on each side. This additional layer of underlay should run continuously from eaves to ridge. Forst ATX Roof Underlays must be laid horizontally across the roof. At ridge level Forst ATX Roof Underlays should be carried over the ridge with a minimum overlap of 225mm (Ref. Fig. 3). Where the length of the rafter slope measured on plan exceeds 6m, Forst ATX should only be installed in accordance with the manufacturer s guidance. Forst ATX Roof Underlays should be draped with a deflection of 10mm between rafters to direct the water vapour into the gutter. Ventilation requirements should be in accordance with Technical Guidance Document to Part F of the Building Regulations 1997 to Continuous eaves ventilation should be provided at a minimum rate Type 5U (to IS 36 or BS 747) roofing felt to be used at eaves with a 500mm overlap and dressed 50mm into the gutter or eaves facia tray to provide UV protection to the Forst ATX Roof Tile Underlay. Interlocking single lap tiles equivalent to 10mm continuous and ridge ventilation of 5mm per linear meter. Where continuous eaves ventilation is provided, the soffit vent should incorporate a fly screen to prevent birds and insects entering the roof void. To facilitate in the ventilation of the eaves, the use of proprietary eaves ventilators is strongly recommended as they ensure that quilt or loose fill insulation will not obstruct the flow of ventilating air where the insulation and roof meet. (Ref. Fig.2) Where proprietary roof space ventilation products are used they should perform satisfactorily as roofing products and should offer adequate resistance to wind load, deluges and driving rain and should not adversely affect the durability performance of the roof. Ridge ventilators must be used with the Forst ATX range of underlays and they should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer instructions. When installing the tile/slate/ridge ventilators it is important that an undercloak is inserted under the Forst ATX Roof Underlay to protect the opening from moisture running down the membrane. When fitting tile/slate ventilators they should be installed as close to the ridge as possible to increase ventilation circulation. (Ref. Fig.4). Where Forst ATX Roof Underlay are used in dormer roof construction i.e. where the ventilation is along the line of the rafters, a vapour control layer must be installed on the warm side of the insulation. 5 A vapour control layer should be of minimum 500- gauge polyethylene with sealed laps or its equivalent. Forst ATX if exposed to UV light on a continuous basis, will degrade; therefore at eaves the use of a type 5U felt to IS 36 or BS 747 (1994) Specification for Roofing Felts must be used. This felt should be laid typically with a 500mm lap to the gutter, and be dressed 50mm into the gutter and be provided with a tilting fillet. (Ref. Fig. 1). Once Forst ATX Roof Underlay is installed, it should not be exposed to UV light for more than 1 month as it will degrade if exposed to UV light. Figure 2. Strength Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlays will resist the loads associated with the installation of the roof. Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlays have adequate resistance to wind uplift forces in most locations in Ireland and may be considered equivalent in strength to Type 1F reinforced bitumen underlay as defined in BS 747:1994 Specification for roofing felts. Tests on Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I and ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlays fixed over rafters at 500 mm centres with batten centres at 330 mm have shown that the material does not extend unduly or tear around nail holes when subjected to a suction of up to 2.5 kpa. Design wind speeds should be determined and wind uplift forces calculated in accordance with BS 6399 Part 2: 1997, Code of Practice for Wind Loads. Weathertightness Tests confirm that Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlay will resist the passage of water, wind-blown snow and dust into the interior of a building under all conditions to be found in a roof constructed to Irish Code of Practice ICP 2: 1986, Slating and Tiling, BS 5534: Part 1: 1997, Code of practice for slating and tiling and BS 8000: Part 6: 1990: (1997), Code of practice for slating and tiling of roofs and claddings. For effective water management of a roof subject to severe driving rain conditions all underlays must be installed so that any water leaking through the roof tiles is carried by the underlay to the gutters. Ventilation Particular attention should be given to ensure that there is adequate ventilation to the roof space at both eaves and ridge levels. Slate/tile vents must be installed at the highest point to the ridge as is possible. Where the ceiling has to be fixed to the soffit of the rafters and insulation is to be fitted between rafters as in dormer roof construction, a continuous ventilation space of at least 50mm should be arranged for as shown in Diagram 6D of the Technical Guidance Document to Part F of the Building Regulations 1997 to 2002; a vapour control layer must be installed on the warm side of the insulation. It is essential that roofs are constructed so as to minimise the risk of moisture vapour entering the attic space and the formation of condensation. In accordance with good building construction practice, all openings for services and trap doors should be draught sealed, and trap doors should not be located in bathrooms, shower rooms or kitchens.

7 PART 4 TECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS 4.1 BEHAVIOUR IN FIRE (1) Tests on Forst ATX Classic and ATX Master roof underlays indicate that there is a risk that fire can spread if the material is accidentally ignited during maintenance works, (eg roofer or plumbers torch). Forst ATX Classic 1 and Forst ATX Master both have fire retardant treatment. As with all types of sarking material, care must be taken during building and maintenance to avoid the material becoming ignited, (2) Toxicity - Negligible when used in a roof situation. 4.2 WATER PENETRATION Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlays when used in accordance with this Certificate, presents no significant risk of water penetration. 4.3 RISK OF WATER VAPOUR PENETRATION AND CONDENSATION ATX Master roof underlays provide water vapour permeability of the same order as quoted as a minimum for conventional roof tile underlays in, BS 5534: Part 1: 1997, Code of practice for slating and tiling - Design, and hence, some movement of moisture vapour can take place through the overlaps of the underlay. This standard also describes the factors to be considered in reducing condensation to a satisfactory minimum. The design guidelines contained in the Technical Guidance Document F Ventilation of the Building Regulations 1997 to 2002 and BS 5250: 1989; (1995) Code of practice for control of condensation in buildings, sections to must be met when installing this product. ATX Master roof underlays should be treated as an impermeable underlays when considering the ventilation requirements of the roof. Typical values of water vapour resistance for Forst ATX Classic, ATX Classic I, ATX Classic N and ATX Master roof underlays and other roof sarking materials are given in Table DURABILITY ATX Master roof underlays are virtually unaffected by conditions normally found in a roof space and will have a life comparable with that of Type 1F bitumen underlay. 4.5 TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE FOLLOWING: Density Water vapour resistance Dimensional accuracy Tear strength Elongation at break Dimensional stability UV stability Efficiency of the construction process 4.6 OTHER INVESTIGATIONS (I) Existing data on product properties in relation to fire, toxicity, environmental impact and the effect on mechanical strength/stability and durability were assessed. (ii) The manufacturing process was examined including the methods adopted for quality control, and details were obtained of the quality and composition of the materials used. (iii) Site visits were conducted to assess the practicability of installation and the history of performance in use of the product. (iv) Driving rain resistance was assessed. (v) A condensation risk analysis was performed. Table 4. 8 PART 5 CONDITIONS 5.1 CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATION The National Standards Authority of Ireland ( NSAI ) following consultation with the Irish Agrément Board ( IAB ) has assessed the performance and method of installation of the product/process and the quality of the materials used in its manufacture and certifies the product/process to be fit for the use for which it is certified provided that it is manufactured, installed, used and maintained in accordance with the descriptions and specifications set out in this certificate and in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions and usual trade practice. This certificate shall remain valid so long as: (a) the specification of the product is unchanged; (b) the Building Regulations, 1997 to 2002 and any other regulation or standard applicable to the product/process, its use or installation remain unchanged; (c) the product continues to be assessed for the quality of its manufacture and marking by NSAI; (d) no new information becomes available, which in the opinion of the NSAI would preclude the granting of the certificate; (e) the product or process continues to be manufactured, installed, used and maintained in accordance with the description, specifications and safety recommendations set out in this certificate. 5.2 The IAB mark and certification number may only be used on or in relation to products/processes in respect of which a valid certificate exists. If the certificate becomes invalid, the certificate holder must not use the IAB mark and certification number and must remove them from products already marked. 5.3 In granting this certificate, the NSAI makes no representation as to: (a) the presence or absence of patent rights subsisting in the product/process; or (b) the legal right of the certificate holder to market, install or maintain the product/process; or (c) whether individual products have been manufactured or installed by the certificate holder in accordance with the descriptions and specifications set out in this certificate. 5.4 This certificate does not comprise installation instructions and does not replace the manufacturer s directions or any professional or trade advice relating to use and installation which may be appropriate. 5.5 Any recommendations contained in this certificate relating to the safe use of the certified product or process are preconditions to the validity of the certificate. However, the NSAI does not certify that the manufacture or installation of the certified product or process in accordance with the descriptions and specifications set out in this certificate will satisfy the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 or of any other current or future statute or current or future common law duty of care owed by the manufacturer or by the certificate holder. 5.6 The NSAI is not responsible to any person or body for loss or damage, including personal injury, arising as a direct or indirect result of the use of this product or process. 5.7 Where reference is made in this certificate to any Act of the Oireachtas, regulation made thereunder, statutory instrument, code of practice, national standards, manufacturer s instructions or similar publication, it shall be construed as reference to such publication in the form in which it is in force at the date of this certification.
