Each product is for use in slated or tiled roofs constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS 5534 : The products are for use to provide a weatherproof junction at changes of direction and materials. The products are manufactured and marketed by the Certificate holder. These Front Sheets must be read in conjunction with the accompanying Detail Sheets, which provide information to specific products. Regulations Detail Sheet 1 1 The Building Regulations 2000 (as amended) (England and Wales) The Secretary of State has agreed with the British Board of Agrément the aspects of performance to be used by the BBA in assessing the compliance of roof waterproofing systems with the Building Regulations. In the opinion of the BBA, Harcon GRP Valley Trough Sections, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will meet or contribute to meeting the relevant requirements. Requirement: B4(2) External fire spread Data obtained on tests to BS : 1958, indicate that the use of the products will enable a roof to be unrestricted by this Requirement. See tinted areas of the Properties in relation to fire section of these Front Sheets. Requirement: C2(b) Resistance to moisture Tests for water resistance indicate that the products meet this Requirement. See the tinted area of the Weathertightness section of these Front Sheets. Requirement: Regulation 7 Materials and workmanship The products are acceptable materials. See the tinted area of the Durability section of these Front Sheets. 2 Electronic Copy 2 The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004 In the opinion of the BBA, Harcon GRP Valley Trough Sections, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy or contribute to satisfying the various Regulations and related Mandatory Standards as listed below. Regulation: 8 Fitness and durability of materials and workmanship Regulation: 8(1) Fitness and durability of materials and workmanship The products can contribute to a construction satisfying this Regulation. See the tinted area of the Durability section of these Front Sheets and the Installation part of the accompanying Detail Sheets. Regulation: 9 Building standards construction Standard: 2.8 Spread from neighbouring buildings Data obtained from tests to BS : 1958, indicate that the use of the products will enable a roof to be unrestricted under this Standard, with reference to clauses (1)(2) and (1)(2). See the tinted areas of the Properties in relation to fire section of these Front Sheets. Standard: 3.10 Precipitation Tests for water resistance indicate that the use of the products will enable a roof to satisfy the requirements of this Standard, with reference to clauses (1)(2) and (1)(2). Regulation: 12 Building standards conversions All comments given for this product under Regulation 9, also apply to this Regulation with reference to clause (1)(2) and Schedule 6 (1)(2). (2) Technical Handbook (Non-Domestic). 3 The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 In the opinion of the BBA, Harcon GRP Valley Trough Sections, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy or contribute to satisfying the various Building Regulations as listed below. Regulations: B2 Fitness of materials and workmanship The products are acceptable materials. See the tinted area of Durability section of these Front Sheets. Regulation: C4 Resistance to ground moisture and weather Tests for water resistance indicate that the use of the products can contribute towards enabling a roof to satisfy the requirements of this Regulation. See the tinted area of the Weathertightness section of these Front Sheets. Regulation: E5 External fire spread Data obtained from tests to BS : 1958, indicate that the use of the products will enable a roof to be unrestricted under the requirements of this Regulation. See the tinted areas of the Properties in relation to fire section of these Front Sheets. 4 Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (as amended) Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995 (as amended) Information in this Certificate may assist the client, planning supervisor, designer and contractors to address their obligations under these Regulations. See section: 1 Description (1.2) (of the relevant Detail Sheet). 2

3 Technical Specification 5 Delivery and site handling Harcon GRP Valley Trough Sections are delivered to site in packs of 10. Each item bears the BBA identification mark incorporating the number of this Certificate. Packs should be stored flat on a clean, level surface. Design Data 6 General 6.1 Harcon GRP Valley Trough Sections are suitable for use on slated/tiled roofs constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS 5534 : The sections should be cut to size with a finetoothed saw and can accept holes being drilled using a sharp drill bit. 7 Strength The products have adequate strength to resist impacts likely to occur during installation and use. 8 Weathertightness Test data confirm that the products will adequately resist the passage of moisture to the inside of the building and so meet the requirements of: England and Wales Approved Document C, Requirement C2(b) Section 6.0 Scotland Mandatory Standard 3.10 Northern Ireland Regulation C4. Electronic Copy 9 Properties in relation to fire 9.1 Samples of GRP, representative of that used in the manufacture of the products, when tested in accordance with BS : 1958, achieved an EXT.S.AA rating. 9.2 Samples of GRP, representative of that used in the manufacture of the products, when tested in accordance with BS : 1987, achieved a Class 3 surface spread of flame. 10 Maintenance Minimum maintenance is required and the smooth surface finish will inhibit the build-up of foreign matter. Damaged lengths can be replaced without having to remove adjacent lengths. 11 Durability Available test data and knowledge of the material suggest that the products, when installed in accordance with this Certificate, should have a life of at least 20 years. 4 Conditions of Certification 12 Conditions 12.1 This Certificate: (a) relates only to the product that is named, described, installed, used and maintained as set out in this Certificate; (b) is granted only to the company, firm or person identified on the front cover no other company, firm or person may hold or claim any entitlement to this Certificate; (c) is valid only within the UK; (d) has to be read, considered and used as a whole document it may be misleading and will be incomplete to be selective; (e) is copyright of the BBA; (f) is subject to English law References in this Certificate to any Act of Parliament, Regulation made thereunder, Directive or Regulation of the European Union, Statutory Instrument, Code of Practice, British Standard, manufacturers instructions or similar publication, are references to such publication in the form in which it was current at the date of this Certificate This Certificate will remain valid for an unlimited period provided that the product and the manufacture and/or fabrication including all related and relevant processes thereof: (a) are maintained at or above the levels which have been assessed and found to be satisfactory by the BBA; (b) continue to be checked as and when deemed appropriate by the BBA under arrangements that it will determine; and Electronic Copy (c) are reviewed by the BBA as and when it considers appropriate In granting this Certificate, the BBA is not responsible for: (a) the presence or absence of any patent, intellectual property or similar rights subsisting in the product or any other product; (b) the right of the Certificate holder to market, supply, install or maintain the product; and (c) the actual works in which the product is installed, used and maintained, including the nature, design, methods and workmanship of such works Any recommendations relating to the use or installation of this product which are contained or referred to in this Certificate are the minimum standards required to be met when the product is used. Tiled roofs must be constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS 5534 : This Detail Sheet must be read in conjunction with the Front Sheets, which give the product s position regarding the Building Regulations, general information relating to the product, and the Conditions of Certification. Technical Specification Figure 2 Tile Valley Trough 1 Description 1.1 Harcon GRP Valley Troughs Types A and D are manufactured from glass-fibre/polyester laminates in a continuous process to the profiles shown in Figures 1 and 2. Sanded strips bonded along the upper surface of each edge provide a key for bedding the roof tiles in mortar. 1.2 The troughs are manufactured to the nominal specification: thickness (mm) 1.3 area weight (kgm 2 ) 1.83 width (mm) 360 (Type A) 410 (Type D) length (m) 1.8, 2.4, 3.0 sanded strip width (mm) 40 standard colour (1) grey/blue (1) Other colours are available to order. Valley troughs can be installed without the use of valley boards provided the trough is pushed down snugly against the rafters and is drilled and nailed correctly. However, there is a greater risk of mortar bedding being loosened, and foot traffic must be avoided. A heavier weight X grade valley trough weighing 2.4 kgm 2 reducing the need for valley boards is also available. 3.2 The valley should be lined first longitudinally with reinforced underlay one metre wide. A length of the trough should be pressed to a snug fit into the valley and the line of the outer edges marked. The pitch angle of the valley trough, originally 17, will adapt to suit pitches from 5 to Counter battens of similar size to the roofing battens should be fixed along the marked line to support the edges of the trough, using nails of a quality acceptable in good roofing practice. 3.4 Commencing at the foot of the valley, troughs should be nailed at 400 mm spacings to the counter battens through drilled holes. 3.5 Consecutive lengths of valley trough should be laid allowing a 150 mm overlap at the joints, finally trimming at the head and foot of the valley using a fine-toothed saw. 3.6 The tiles should be bedded onto mortar laid on the sanded strips, keeping the water channels clear. Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the technical investigations carried out on Harcon GRP Valley Troughs Types A and D. 4 Tests Samples of the troughs and representative samples of the material were supplied by the manufacturer for testing. Tests were carried out in accordance with MOAT No 9 : 1973 to determine: resin/glass ratio dimensions Electronic Copy tensile strength/elongation cross-breaking strength effect of elevated temperatures effect of water impact resistance. 5 Investigations 5.1 The results of fire tests on samples of GRP used in the manufacture of the product, carried out in accordance with BS : 1958 and BS : 1987 by an independent test authority, were assessed. 5.2 The manufacturing process was examined, including the methods adopted for quality control, and details were obtained of the quality and composition of the materials used. 5.3 A visit was made to a site in progress to assess the practicability of installation. 5.4 A visit was made to an existing site to examine the performance of the product. Roofs must be constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS 5534 : This Detail Sheet must be read in conjunction with the Front Sheets, which give the product s position regarding the Building Regulations, general information relating to the product, and the Conditions of Certification. Technical Specification 1 Description 1.1 Harcon GRP Secret Gutter Type C sections are manufactured from glass-fibre/polyester laminate in a continuous process to the profile illustrated (see Figure 1) with a sanded strip bonded along the centre line of the upper surface to provide a key for bedding the roof tiles/slates in mortar. 1.3 Quality control checks are performed on incoming materials, during production and on the final product. Checks on the final product include: visual inspections weight dimensions. Installation Figure 1 Secret Gutter Type C 260 mm sanded strip 2 General Installation of Harcon GRP Secret Gutter Type C should be in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions and the relevant recommendations of BS 5534 : 2003 and BS : mm secret gutter 1.2 The sections are manufactured to the nominal characteristics: thickness (mm) 1.1 area weight (kgm 2 ) 1.5 total width (mm) 260 length (m) 1.8, 2.4, 3.0 sanded strip width (mm) 40 standard colour (1) grey/blue (1) Other colours are available to order. 3 Procedure 3.1 The underlay and battens over the joint area of the separating-wall should be made good. Battens may cross over the separating-wall without trimming. 3.2 The adjoining roof should be prepared by renewing any nails in the first 130 mm, and cutting the tiles or slates in the straight line mid-way over the separating-wall. 3.3 The gutter should be slid under undisturbed tiles or slates, approximately 115 mm, and nailed to the battens through drilled holes using nails of a quality acceptable to good roofing practice. 3.4 Consecutive lengths of valley trough should be laid allowing a 150 mm overlap at the joints and extending over the fascia board into the gutter. 3.5 The tiles or slates should then be fixed with a butt joint over the centre of the trough and bedded onto mortar or mastic laid on the sanded strip. The water channels must be left free from mortar or mastic. 12 Installation Electronic Copy Technical Investigations 2 General Installation of Harcon GRP Dry Valley Troughs Types DVA and DVB should be in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions and the relevant recommendations of BS 5534 : 2003 and BS : Procedure 3.1 The use of valley boards, 12 mm boards supported on noggings between rafters or, alternatively, 6 mm boards laid over rafters, is recommended. 3.2 The valley should be lined first longitudinally with reinforced underlay one metre wide. 3.3 Counter battens of similar size to the roofing battens to support the edge of the trough, should be fixed at the correct distance from the centre of the valley (varying according to roof pitch) using nails of a quality acceptable in good roofing practice. Ensure that the roof tile underlay is laid over the counter battens before fitting the tiling battens. The ends of the tiling battens should be firmly secured to the valley boards. 3.4 A section in the fascia board should be cut to allow the valley to run straight into the gutter without having to bend up over it. 3.5 A V shape should then be cut out at the end of the valley to fit neatly into the gutter. 3.6 Position the Dry Valley Trough by locating firmly between the counter battens. The eaves filler is located at the tail of any run to close the cavity and can be trimmed to suit, if necessary. 3.7 Fix the Dry Valley Trough by nailing at 400 mm centres. 3.8 Consecutive lengths of Dry Valley Troughs should be laid allowing a 150 mm overlap at the joints, finally trimming at the head and foot of the valley using a fine-toothed saw. 3.9 The tiles should be laid in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. The following is a summary of the technical investigations carried out on Harcon GRP Dry Valley Troughs Types DVA and DVB. 4 Tests Samples of the troughs and representative samples of the material were supplied by the manufacturer for testing. Tests were carried out in accordance with MOAT No 9 : 1973 to determine: resin/glass ratio dimensions tensile strength/elongation cross-breaking strength effect of elevated temperatures effect of water impact resistance. 5 Investigations 5.1 The results of fire tests on samples of GRP used in the manufacture of the product, carried out in accordance with BS : 2004 and BS : 1987 by an independent test authority, were assessed. 5.2 The manufacturing process was examined, including the methods adopted for quality control, and details were obtained of the quality and composition of the materials used. 2
