CHAPTER-3 OBJECTIVES OF PRESENT WORK 38
3.1 Aim Investigative Study of the Use of Industrial Sludge, Waste & By-Product Specifically Fly Ash, As Raw Materials in Highway Construction Industry 3.2 Objectives The present research work is focused with following objectives: 1. To study the suitability of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) like Fly Ash (Class - F) and Hypo Sludge. 2. To find out the optimum percentage of Fly Ash (Class - F) and Hypo Sludge in pavement quality concrete. 3. To find out the effect of Glass Fibre addition in Fly Ash (Class-F) and Hypo Sludge based concrete on mechanical properties. a) Compressive strength b) Modulus of Elasticity c) Flexural strength 4. To study the techno-economic aspects of rigid pavement in Rural Road and National Highway from result obtained from various test performed, according to IRC standards. 3.3 Scope of the work 1. This research is carried out for determining the effect on the development of the Rural Road Network and National Highway Network by percentage replacement of cement by Fly Ash (class-f) and Hypo Sludge on the properties of rigid pavement. 2. SCMs have better scope in construction of rigid pavement, which would lead to safer, simpler and cost effective development of rural road infrastructure. 3. To prepare a pavement cost comparative analysis for rigid pavement. 39
3.4 Research Plan To achieve the aim of research project work the research plan is prepared. It includes materials to be used, various experimental investigation, concrete mix design and test samples to be prepared Materials The following materials are selected for study purpose. 1. OPC 53 Grade Cement 2. Fly Ash Class F - Power plant of Maize Products (A division of Sayaji Industries Ltd), located near Kathwada in Ahmedabad District in Gujarat State. 3. Hypo Sludge- J. K. Papers mill Pvt. Ltd, plant. This plant is located near Songadh in Tapi District in Gujarat State. 4. Coarse aggregate- Locally available 20mm down size-is Fine aggregate- Natural River Sand Locally available Zone II - IS Glass Fibre- KDM Glass Fibre, Ankleshwar, Bharuch District in Gujarat State Experimental Investigation 1. The experimental investigation includes testing of basic additive materials: fly ash, hypo sludge and glass fibres for required physical and chemical properties. 2. The materials are mixed with cement for preparing pavement quality concrete. The schedule of mix proportion and casting of concrete testing cubes, cylinders and beams are followed after mix design and manufacture of concrete. 3. The cubes, cylinders and beams test data were analyzed and inferences/ conclusions drawn. 4. The prepared concrete results are used for design of rural road pavement and pavements for national highways. The cost estimates for lm2 of concrete made of standard materials and concrete made with additive waste materials were compared. The methodology is shown in Figure
Figure 3.1: Methodology of Research Work 41
3.4.3 Concrete Mix Design for the study Eight types of concrete (M25 and M4Q) mix used for casting and testing of cubes, cylinders and beams for making economical and durable concrete. The percent replacement of cement by fly ash, hypo sludge and glass fibres are given in Table 3.1.
