The world as never seen before. i.light is a precast concrete panel, made by combining an innovative mortar with special resins. Its transparent characteristic not only is able to transmit natural and artificial light, but also it makes human eyes able to see images and objects placed behind the panel. i.light is just one of the products resulting from the continued commitment of Italcementi Group in developing innovative solutions for the building construction industry. How is it born? i.light has been developed following a precise and visionary request from Giampaolo Imbrighi, the Italian architect, who was in charge of designing the Italian Pavilion for Expo Shanghai The request was clear: to develop a cement based material able to transmit light. Italcementi Group R&D conveyed this futuristic vision into reality. Starting from a customer request, our researchers developed a complete new material, showing how building construction industry is only apparently a traditional sector. Indeed, this product s the typical mindset that considers walls as obscuring components re-evalueted them as an innovative way to transmit light.

3 Versatility of the panel i.light panels are open to various forms of customization. Resins color can Dimension can Resins shape can Mortar color can This particular design has been called i.light SHANGHAI, to pay tribute to the Italian Pavilion. The panel used for the Shanghai pavilion weights 50 kg and its dimensions are 500x1000x50 mm. It contains more than 50 rows of resins shaped with a rectangular design. 4 innovation by Italcementi Group i light Performances and Costs i.light SHANGHAI is designed to have 20% of its surface transparent. The technology used to build i.light panel guarantees a degree of light angle of incidence higher than optical fibers. The resin components allow to capture more light than optical fibers, because they allow a larger light cone to pass through their surface. The light transmission of the resins component is equal to glass one. i.light is more tenacious than products containing optical fibers. The cost of i.light is at least 10 times lower than the same material obtained using optical fibers. Energy saving performance s from design to design. University laboratories are working to quantify the amount of energy saving for each panel design. 5 i light innovation by Italcementi Group First realization Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light. used to say Le Corbuiser... it has never been so real. The Italian Pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010 represents the first realization made with i.light. 3,774 transparent panels of i.light have been produced and used to cover a total surface area of 1,887 sq. m., representing approximately 40% of the total envelope of the Pavilion, creating a sequence of lights and shadows in constant evolution. During the day, external light filters into the building allowing a saving of artificial illumination, and creating always a new and suggestive atmosphere, as the daylight intensity varies during the day. At night the effect becomes magical, with internal light filtering through the panels and making the building become alive. Thanks to this, the architectural structure itself creates a show that has never been seen before. The huge success of the Italian pavilion, with more than 6 million visitors in 5 months, pushed the China Government to elect it has permanent pavilion. It will not be dismantled after the Expo, but it will stay, lightful and proud, representing one of the best inventions of 2010 in China. i.light winner of the Best what s new 2010 by Popular Science Magazine
