Hawkins Hanger Tensile Testing: Summary of Testing Results Prepared For: Chris Ramseyer, Ph.D., P.E. Director, Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory, University of Oklahoma Prepared By: Seth Roswurm, EI Research Associate, Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory, University of Oklahoma July 1, 2012
Executive Summary On June 26, 2013 and June 27, 2013, a series of 3 steel coupons were subjected to tensile testing at the Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory. All testing was performed by Seth Roswurm, E.I. in general accordance with the testing protocol found in ASTM E8 Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials. These 3 coupons were tested in order to assist in identifying the primary mechanical properties of the steel in question. The testing performed on these samples generated sufficient information to identify the modulus of elasticity, the yield strength, and the ultimate strength of each. The full results from this testing are attached in the report that follows. Since each specimen submitted for testing was of a slightly unique dimension, the test results have not been averaged. Instead, the are report here in discrete form: North (N) Coupon: o Yield Strength: Fy = 40 Ksi o Ultimate Strength: Fu = 55.3 Ksi Middle (M) Coupon: o Yield Strength: Fy = 45 Ksi o Ultimate Strength: Fu = 54.5 Ksi South (S) Coupon: o Yield Strength: Fy = 42 Ksi o Ultimate Strength: Fu = 57.7 Ksi
Testing Results This report summarizes the complete results of tensile testing performed on the Watkins Hanger steel coupon samples. As noted in the executive summary, all results are reported in discrete form; no averaging across tests has been performed. The same procedure was used for testing each coupon in general accordance with the requirements of ASTM E8. Each coupon was equipped with an extensometer in order to capture the stress-strain behavior up to the point of yielding. The extensometer was then removed after the material had exhibited yielding and a short plateau, and the specimen was loaded to rupture.
North (N) Coupon Figure 1 shows the stress-strain curve obtained for the N coupon. Figure 1: North (N) Coupon Stress Strain Diagram Figure 1 indicates that the coupon effectively yielded at a stress of 40 ksi. The ultimate capacity of the specimen was 55.3 ksi and rupture occurred at a stress of 41.7 ksi. The geometric, extension, and strength properties of the coupon are summarized in Table 1. Table 1: North Coupon Properties Parameter: Measurement: Coupon Width (in.): Coupon Thickness (in.): Cross-Sectional Area (in 2 ): Extension Marker Gauge Length (in.): -- Ultimate Extension (in.): -- Ultimate Strain (%): -- Yield Strength (Ksi): 40 Ultimate Strength (Ksi): 55.3 Rupture Strength (Ksi): 41.7
Middle (M) Coupon Figure 2 shows the stress-strain curve obtained for the M coupon. Figure 2: Middle (M) Coupon Stress Strain Diagram Figure 2 indicates that the coupon effectively yielded at a stress of 45 ksi. The ultimate capacity of the specimen was 54.5 ksi and rupture occurred at a stress of 39.8 ksi. The geometric, extension, and strength properties of the coupon are summarized in Table 2. Table 2: Middle Coupon Properties Parameter: Measurement: Coupon Width (in.): Coupon Thickness (in.): Cross-Sectional Area (in 2 ): Extension Marker Gauge Length (in.): 2.03 Ultimate Extension (in.): Ultimate Strain (%): 41.5 Yield Strength (Ksi): 45 Ultimate Strength (Ksi): 54.5 Rupture Strength (Ksi): 39.8
South (S) Coupon Figure 3 shows the stress-strain curve obtained for the S coupon. Figure 3: Middle (M) Coupon Stress Strain Diagram Figure 3 indicates that the coupon effectively yielded at a stress of 42 ksi. The ultimate capacity of the specimen was 57.7 ksi and rupture occurred at a stress of 43.9 ksi. The geometric, extension, and strength properties of the coupon are summarized in Table 3. Table 3: South Coupon Properties Parameter: Measurement: Coupon Width (in.): Coupon Thickness (in.): Cross-Sectional Area (in 2 ): Extension Marker Gauge Length (in.): 2.03 Ultimate Extension (in.): Ultimate Strain (%): 31.6 Yield Strength (Ksi): 42 Ultimate Strength (Ksi): 57.7 Rupture Strength (Ksi): 43.9
