Red Light Challenge How many Action Items for Doors in Built Green Unified Single Family / New Construction Checklist? Three Item #5-9 Use Salvaged Doors Item #5-59 Use doors that are recycled-content or certified as sustainably produced Item #5-60 Use domestically-grown and manufactured wood interior doors Red Light Challenge Part Two What are the benefits to Using Domestically Grown Wood Interior Doors? Same Performance Reduce impact on endangered species Less embodied energy
Windows The Primary Green Consideration for Windows is Energy Performance Composite, Plastic and Wood Windows Skylights, Tubular Skylights & Roof Windows Exterior Sun Control Devices Windows Composite, Plastic and Wood Trade-off between optimum material selection and energy performance Milgard Fiberglass Renewal by Andersen Composite Wood Milgard Vinyl JS Benson FSC-Certified Wood
Windows Fiberglass - Serious Windows changed to Alpen High Performance R-7 to R-11 R-values increased to R-12.5 R-20 A natural insulator: 500 times less conductive than aluminum Because the frame is also made of glass, the frame expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass in the window which further reduces energy leaks--unlike frames made of wood, aluminum, or vinyl Windows Tubular Skylights, Skylights & Roof Windows Tubular Skylights, aka light tubes.. Solatube Daylighting Benefits Improves general well-being Increases workplace productivity & enhanced school performance Saves in electric lighting and cooling-load avoidance Allows light access to hard to light places Hallways Horizontal applications

Week 5 Topics Overview Air Sealing & Mechanical Systems Caulks & Adhesives The main piece of technology in the green economy is a caulking gun. -Van Jones, The Green Collar Economy Mechanical Systems/ HVAC Caulks & Adhesives The Primary Green Consideration for Caulks & Adhesives is Indoor Air Quality Conventional products off-gas VOCs, formaldehyde and other chemicals Use Low- or No-VOC products Greatest impact occurs during and immediately following installation Always use proper ventilation during any application
Benefits of Insulation source: December 14, 2010 CBS2 Article. poor-insulation-could-be-costinghomeowners-hundreds/ It is estimated that as many 98 million U.S. homes are underinsulated wasting 20 percent or more of the heat they re generating. "By heading straight to the attic and adding insulation, homeowners can make their homes greener, save money, and conserve the energy equivalent of 103 million barrels of oil annually enough to fill 51 supertankers." Gale Tedhams, Owens Corning, 2007 Caulk & Adhesive Products Duct Mastic Joint Sealants Flex Duct & Register Boot Sealing, Iris Communication, 1992 Construction Adhesives
Air Sealing at Work Airtight Drywall Approach Blip Design Architects Seattle Remodel Advanced Sealing Package Caulk or gasket drywall installed on exterior walls at top and bottom plates, windows and doorframes Caulk or gasket drywall installed on interior walls at intersection with exterior ceiling Caulk or gasket electrical, plumbing, or mechanical penetrations in drywall Air Sealing at Work Sealing new window installation at the Sensible House, 1 st 5-star Built Green Project in Seattle Sealing electrical penetrations
Red Light Challenge Which Built Green Items in the Unified SF/NC Checklist awards points for using caulk? 3-15 Use Airtight Drywall Approach 4-30 to 4-36 Use Only Low-VOC, Low-Toxic, Water-based, Solvent-free Caulks Construction Adhesives Conventional Adhesives may off-gas large amounts of toxic VOC s (including solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons Low VOC, High Performance Options Are Available
Mechanical Systems/ HVAC Air-to-Air Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) Mechanical air-exchange system Captures exhaust heat to warm incoming air Provides fresh air HRV vs. Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) ERVs provide humidity, which we normally do not need in Western WA, however, the cost differential vs. performance, makes ERV s an attractive alternative. How a Heat Recovery Ventilator Works 3-50 Install an HRV or ERV 5 Points Employs a counter-flow heat exchanger (countercurrent heat exchange) between the inbound and outbound air flow. HRV provides fresh air and improved climate control, while also saving energy by reducing heating (and cooling) requirements for many applications
Mechanical Systems/HVAC Air Outlets and Inlets Passive air inlets supply make-up air Can be fully closed or used as trickle ventilation Replaces air actively removed by exhaust-only ventilation systems Mechanical Systems/HVAC Bathroom Vent Vans May be the only mechanical ventilation system in a house Only works if they re running Quiet models Timers Panasonic Exhaust Fan
Mechanical Systems/HVAC Domestic Water Heaters Furnaces Boilers BG SFNC 3-51 Select Energy Star Heating and Cooling Equipment Duct Mastic BG SFNC 3-38 Use Advanced Sealing of ALL Ducts Using Low-Toxic Mastic Mechanical Systems/HVAC Heat Pumps During the winter, heat pumps extract heat from the cold air outside and release it inside the house. Heat pumps are very efficient when outside temperatures range from 45 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They become less efficient as the temperature drops. When the outside air temperature is very low, an auxiliary electric heater must be used to supplement the heat pump's output.
Air Source or Ductless Minisplit Heat Pumps Consists of outdoor compressor (a box about three feet on a side and a foot deep) an indoor unit (evaporator with blower) that mounts on an interior wall copper tubing that carries refrigerant between the two. The indoor unit of the Mitsubishi minisplit heat pump. Photo Credit: Alex Wilson The outdoor unit of the Fujitsu minisplit heat pump. Photo Credit: quadomated.com Other Heat Pumps Ground Source Heat Pump relies on the ground (or groundwater) as the heat source in the heating mode (and heat sink for cooling) $35,000 (or even more) to install residential-sized ground-source heat pumps. The cost is so high because of trenching or drilling wells. Geothermal Heat Pump
