7 Typical Film Structure About Window Film UV Radiation Definition UV radiation is high energy, invisible solar radiation with wavelengths of 90 nm to 380 nm. UVc is completely absorbed by the ozone layer in the atmosphere. UVb is partially absorbed by the atmosphere. UVa is transmitted by the atmosphere and glass. UVa and UVb contribute to fading of materials and, at excessive dose, can lead to skin cancer. Solar Energy Absorption The solar energy with wavelengths between 280 and 200 nm that is absorbed by the window and transformed into heat. Visible Light Transmission That part of the solar energy with wavelengths between 380 and 780 nm that is transmitted directly through the window. Visible Light Reflection That part of the solar energy with wavelengths between 380 and 780 nm that is reflected by the window. UV Transmission That part of the solar energy with wavelengths between 280 and 380 nm that is directly transmitted through the window. Shading Coefficient (b Value) The transmission of solar energy by the film on a standard clear 3 mm annealed glass compared to the transmission of the clear 3 mm annealed glass without film. Coefficient of Total Energy Transmission Definition (g Value) The total of the direct solar energy transmission plus the reradiation of the absorbed solar energy to the interior of the building, divided by 00. This is the total proportion of solar energy that enters the building. Total Solar Energy Rejected The total of the solar energy reflection plus the re-radiation of the absorbed solar energy to the exterior of the building. This is the total proportion of solar energy that is rejected from the building (a opposite measure to the g value). Coefficient of Thermal Transmission (U Value) This is a measure of the rate of heat loss from a building in Watts from one side of the glass to the other side, per square metre of glass, per K (= C) difference in temperature between the two sides. Test Methods All these tests have been done using standard clear 3 mm annealed glass. Total solar transmission and total solar reflection have been determined from spectrophotometric data on the glazing system, from the solar spectrum at air mass 2, and values corrected to absolute where applicable. Visible light transmission and reflection have been determined from spectrophotometric data using the CIE standard observer (CIE 924 & 93) and D-6 daylight. Film to Glass Thermal Stress Compatibility Glass has a small risk of breakage due to thermal stress, which can be increased by incorrect specification of window film. Eastman s Film-to-Glass Compatibility Guidelines assess thermal stress in glass with the objective of minimising the risk of thermal stress breakage. It is recommended that these guidelines are used with every installation of LLumar window films. Poor glazing and glass quality can significantly increase the risk of glass breakage. Eastman assumes the quality of the glazing and glass is good and complies with relevant European standards. UV transmission has been determined for the transmission of solar UV radiation from 300 to 380 nm at air mass 2. Shading coefficient and total solar energy rejected have been determined according to ASHRAE methodology.
