AGRÉMENT CERTIFICATION INCLUDES: factors relating to compliance with Building Regulations where applicable factors relating to additional non-regulatory information where applicable independently verified technical specification assessment criteria and technical investigations design considerations installation guidance regular surveillance of production formal three-yearly review. KEY FACTORS ASSESSED Structural performance the system components have adequate strength to resist the loads associated with installation and permanent loading (see section 5). Thermal insulation the system contributes to the overall thermal performance of the construction (see section 6). Condensation risk junctions with other elements will adequately limit the risk of surface condensation (see section 10). 2 Regulations In the opinion of the BBA, the Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will meet or contribute to meeting the relevant requirements of the following Building Regulations: The Building Regulations 2000 (as amended) (England and Wales) Requirement: A1(1) Loading The system will have adequate strength and stiffness. See sections 5.1 to 5.4 of this Certificate. Requirement: C2(c) Resistance to moisture The system can meet this Requirement. See sections 10.1 and 10.2 of this Certificate. Requirement: L1(a)(i) Dwellings The system can adequately limit heat loss. See sections 6.2 to 6.4 of this Certificate. Requirement: Regulation 7 Materials and workmanship The system construction is acceptable. See section 12 and the Installation part of this Certificate. Regulation: 9 Building standards construction Standard: 1.1(2) Structure The system will have sufficient strength and stiffness, with reference to clause (1), when designed and constructed in accordance with sections 5.1 to 5.4 of this Certificate. 3 Zurich Building Guarantee Technical Manual 2007 In the opinion of the BBA, the Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System, when installed and used in accordance with this Certificate, satisfies the requirements of the Zurich Building Guarantee Technical Manual, Section 3 Substructure, Sub-section s. General The Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst (1) House Foundation System is used for constructing ground beams and insulated, suspended ground s in dwellings and other similar buildings. It is for use in traditional low-rise buildings of masonry, timber or light-gauge steel framed construction, for construction up to two storeys plus room-in-the-roof as defined by BS : 1995, in conjunction with piled and pier foundations produced by the Certificate holder. Technical Specification 1 Description 1.1 The Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System comprises galvanized profile steel foundation support beams () infilled with concrete, supporting site-fabricated pairs of galvanized steel joists (TwinBeam), incorporating an insulation deck and a fibre-reinforced screed for ground s of dwellings and similar buildings. 1.2 The components of the system are: (see Figure 1) foundation support beam profile for use as a permanent shutter and support during construction. The rolled profile steel strip is made from 2 mm thick S350 grade (to BS EN : 2004 and BS EN ISO : 1999) pre-galvanized to European designation FEE 350G-450g NAC to BS EN : Dimensions are 306 mm wide by 75 mm deep. The foundation beam (see Figure 6) is cut to predetermined lengths, prior to delivery to site. Once installed, each beam is filled on site with concrete and two high-yield steel reinforcing bars (see Figure 3) channel section (see Figure 2) used in pairs with insulation to make-up a Twin Beam joist. The sections are spaced at 560 mm centres (maximum) with channel sections (diaphragms) at each end and intermediate positions along the span. The channels are fastened top and bottom with Tek screws or by clinch fixing. The sections are from 1.2 mm thick, 142 mm deep by 40 mm wide, cold formed, rolled steel strip S350 grade (to BS EN : 2004 and BS EN ISO : 1999) pre-galvanized to European designation FEE 350G-450g NAC to BS EN : 2004 Figure 1 Figure 2 Channel section used to make up TwinBeam joist dimensions in mm 46 5 dimensions in mm shutter bracket assembly (see Figure 4) for use in supporting 20 mm thick re-usable plywood formwork to edge beam concrete. The Certificate holder arranges for cube testing of site-batched concrete to BS EN : 2000 by UKAS Approved independent testing laboratories screed (40 mm thick) as for concrete with additional polypropylene multi-filament fibre reinforcement cement particle board where the TwinBeam joists are used for garage construction, the insulation and screed is replaced with a 20 mm thick layer of cement particleboard decking (Type T2) to BS EN : 1997 and a 120 mm thick, grade C35 fibre-reinforced concrete to the Certificate holder s specification. 1.3 Other ancillary components include: intermediate support blocks and wedges to provide temporary support to foundation beams prior to and during concrete casting shot-fired and screw fixings. 1.4 Other items for use with the system but outside the scope of this Certificate include: gas membrane when required, subject to effective detailing around service openings and NHBC and national Building Regulation requirements backfill barrier. Quality control 1.5 System components are bought-in to agreed specifications or in accordance with British Standards or Agrément Certificates. 1.6 Quality checks are made during the manufacturing process and on the components. 2 Delivery and site handling 2.1 All components of the system are delivered to site for assembly by the Certificate holder s operatives. 6 2.2 Unless required for immediate use, all components should be stored in a clean, dry environment on firm ground. Care should be taken to a mechanical damage, particularly to edges/corners. Damaged components should not be used. 2.3 Beam elements can be lifted by hand depending on the size of the bundle or mechanically lifted using appropriate slings, chains or shackles. 2.4 If beams are to be stored, a suitable firm surface should be selected. Beam bundles should be supported on timber chocks at third points. Overstacking should be aed to ensure stability of the stack. 2.5 The expanded polystyrene insulation is supplied either in shrink-wrapped packs or containers. Contact with solvents or bitumen products should be aed. 2.6 Concrete is normally delivered to site by lorry, for immediate use. Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on the Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System. Design Considerations 3 General 3.1 The Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System is only suitable for use as suspended ground s in dwellings and other similar buildings. 3.2 All structural design and detailing involving the use of the system must be carried out in accordance with relevant UK Codes of Practice and statutory national Building Regulations. For each project the Certificate holder s Design Department will examine the loading configuration applied by each structure on the system elements and check this against the limitations of the system. 3.3 Any external, internal and separating loadbearing walls together with the threshold of garages must be supported by the foundation support (see Figure 3). 3.4 Holes up to 150 mm in diameter may be formed anywhere in the between the TwinBeam joists. The holes can be formed with sleeves or core-drilled after casting of the. Rectangular holes between the joists, up to 150 mm long (in the direction of span), may be formed at the supported ends only. 3.5 Chases must not be made into the concrete infill of the foundation support beam elements as this will affect the overall strength of foundation support beams. Chasing into the concrete screed, either across or parallel to the span of panels is only allowable subject to agreement with the Certificate holder. 3.6 Floors constructed from the system have adequate resistance to hard-body impacts likely to occur during construction. 3.7 Where radon or landfill gas is present, additional care is required to ensure provision of taped and sealed membrane joints and effective sealing of all service points passing through the. The gas membrane is not covered by this Certificate. 3.8 The ground over which the s are to be installed must be suitably prepared and cleared of vegetation and any contaminants. Floors must include provision for draining the solum and appropriate under- ventilation. Concrete blinding or gravel over a damp-proof membrane (dpm) should be used over the prepared ground surface, where required. 4 Practicability of installation Installation of the Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System must be carried out by personnel trained by the Certificate holder in accordance with the Installation Manual. 5 Structural performance 5.1 The loadbearing capacity of the system has been evaluated by use of finite element analysis (FEA) adopting maximum bending moment and shear forces originally obtained for a hybrid house developed for the Roger Bullivant Limited T4 Kit Tee Beam Foundation System and confirmed by load testing. 5.2 From the test data, it is confirmed by calculation that the s and TwinBeam joists have adequate capacity to resist the construction phase and permanent domestic loading. 5.3 The maximum span of the is 3.5 m measured from the centre of the piles. The beams must have a minimum bearing length of 75 mm. 5.4 The maximum span of the TwinBeam joists is 3.5 m measured from the centre line of the s. The TwinBeam joists must have a minimum bearing length of 60 mm. 5.5 Lightweight non-loadbearing partitions equivalent to 0.5 knm 2 can be built directly off the screed. All other situations require the use of other support elements or additional foundations where point loads are present. Page 6 of 12

7 5.6 Service holes up to 150 mm can be cut through the expanded polystyrene decking on site prior to screeding and sleeves introduced. For larger service openings, specific detailing is required, including additional structural elements. s are not to be cut, trimmed or curtailed short of bearings to accommodate service or other openings. 6 Thermal insulation 6.1 Example calculations to BS EN ISO : 1998 for the SystemFirst Floor System indicate the U values shown in Table 1 (see Table 1, note 1). (1) Technical Handbook (Domestic). 6.3 Floors with U values lower than (or the same as in Scotland) the relevant notional value above will contribute to a dwelling meeting its target of an overall reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of about 20% (or 18% to 25% in Scotland). Floors with higher U values will require additional energy saving measures in the building envelope and/or services. 6.4 Junctions shown in this Certificate, adequately limit heat loss by conduction and, when installed to limit air infiltration, comply with the requirements of the Accredited Construction Details (version 1.0), and the Accredited Construction Details (Scotland). The relevant default psi values given in SAP 2005, Table K1, may be used. 7 Moisture penetration Sub- ventilators and services penetrating the should be of an appropriate design to inhibit the ingress of moisture. 8 8 Properties in relation to fire Cavity barriers are not required where the under is not accessible or is less than 1 m high. 9 Ventilation 9.1 The under is ventilated by pathways and openings providing not less than 1500 mm 2 of ventilation per metre run of external wall (see Figure 5). The channel is pre-punched with 35 mm square holes at 50 mm centres which can be knocked through at crank ventilation positions to provide 3675 mm 2 of ventilation. The crank vents (see Figure 5) are generally provided at 2.45 metre maximum centres. 9.4 In areas prone to landfill gas or methane contamination, the effective open area of the ventilation paths should be at least the recommended minimum, from the BRE Report 212 (BR 212 : 1991) Construction of new buildings on gascontaminated land, of 1500 mm 2 per metre run of wall or 500 mm 2 per square metre of area, whichever is the greater. In areas where full radon precautions are required, the minimum effective open area of 1500 mm 2 per metre run given in BRE Report 211 (BR 211 : 2007) Radon : guidance on protective measures for new dwellings should be used and provision should be made for the possible later addition of mechanical ventilation. 10 Condensation risk 10.1 To minimise the risk of surface condensation on the steel elements within the beneath the, ventilation should be provided (see section 9) Numerical modelling of example /wall junctions indicate that the risk of internal surface condensation will be minimal in normal circumstances. 11 Maintenance As this product is confined beneath the and has suitable durability, maintenance is not required. 12 Durability The exposure condition beneath a suspended ground over a ventilated without oversite concrete or other surface seal is considered moderate as defined in BS : The expanded polystyrene components are not in direct contact with substances liable to cause deterioration and in this context the will have an effective minimum design life of 60 years. Installation 13 General 13.1 Installation of the Roger Bullivant Limited SystemFirst House Foundation System must be carried out in accordance with the Certificate holder s Installation Manual. 9 13.3 The type of backfill barrier used (see Figure 3) should be of sufficient strength to restrain any surcharge load in additional to soil For applications not requiring a gas membrane, a single layer of high-density expanded polystyrene decking is placed, in staggered formation, across the area. Where a gas membrane is required (not covered by this Certificate), the membrane is laid over the insulation, across the concrete infill and lapped over the foundation support beams to join up with the wall dpm; an EPS edge strip is placed on top of the membrane. 14 Site preparation 14.1 The ground surface should be led and cleared of vegetation and contaminants A minimum clearance of 150 mm between the ground surface and the underside of the should be provided in accordance with BS : 1995, Section 5.3. Greater clearances are required for heave-susceptible soils in accordance with NHBC Standards A support or pile foundation (1) and pile cap (1) are constructed by the Certificate holder. (1) Outside the scope of the Certificate Drainage and service ducting are installed in accordance with building design. 15 Installation 15.1 Using agreed datum points and grid references, the s (see Figures 6 and 7) are set out on top of the support caps which may deviate by a maximum vertical tolerance of +0 to 10 mm and horizontal tolerance of ±50 mm. The beams are also supported centrally with temporary intermediate supports for construction loads prior and during concrete casting as required. 10 Figure 7 on support cap 15.2 Final checks for, tolerances, including diagonal check and position, are made, and the beam ends are securely fixed on to the support caps using shot-fired nails or screws The location of drainage runs and service entries are checked and marked on the inside face of the Battlement beam The TwinBeam joists are lifted into position on the s. The joists are checked for correct centres, bearing length on edge and internal s, and correct depth between the soffit of beams and the led ground surface [the steel channel diaphragms also provide partial shuttering for the infill concrete to the s (see Figure 3)] Once the s and TwinBeam joists are positioned and the setting out dimensions checked, the lower sections of the shutter holding brackets are placed onto the s at 500 mm centres using either: a fixative sealant to the Certificate holder s approval, or in preformed holes: push fit grommet, Tek screw or drill and rivet Any debris is cleared out and the reinforcing rods are rested on the bracket reinforcement supports (see Figure 4) and tied together at overlaps as required. The re-usable section of the shutter holding bracket is attached to the lower section The plywood shutters are slotted into the inside face of the bracket (see Figure 4). Corner shuttering may be screw-fixed or nailed to maintain stability during concrete infilling as required The EPS insulation decking is laid onto the top of the TwinBeam joists in accordance with the, specified layout and layout/section drawings Using either hand or pump delivery, concrete is poured into the outer Battlement and between the plywood shuttering to the top of the EPS decking and diaphrams and consolidated using a vibrating poker (maximum 25 mm diameter). The concrete is trowelled smooth to remove excess concrete and allowed to harden for at least one day before placing the screed The screed is poured onto the EPS insulation and to form a surface, using a brush or float, to a tolerance of +5 mm and 0 mm in readiness to receive finishes. Typical construction details are shown in Figure 3. Generally, a 40 mm minimum screed thickness is provided but, where a gas membrane is specified, the screed thickness is increased to a minimum of 55 mm. Technical Investigations 16 Tests 16.1 Hard body impact tests were carried out on the fibre-reinforced concrete screed based on BS EN 1128 : Load testing was carried out to a BBA test specification, on a full-scale panel to determine the strength of system Creep tests were carried out on 500 mm square samples to determine creep characteristics under a sustained load of 1 kn over a 28-day period. 11 17 Investigations 17.1 Finite element analysis, carried out on stainless steel foundation support edge and intermediate beams, was reviewed along with structural calculations and load/span tables in accordance with BS : Floor U values, perimeter heat loss and risk of condensation analysis was undertaken in accordance with BS EN ISO : 1998 and BRE Information Paper IP 1/06 Assessing the effects of thermal bridging at junctions and around openings An examination was made of existing data relating to the durability of the system components. 18 Other investigations 18.1 The manufacturing process was examined and details were obtained of the quality and composition of materials A visit was made to a site to assess the practicability of installation The component specifications and methods for maintaining the required product quality and composition were examined.
