The product is for use on ground-supported or suspended concrete floors. The product may also be used on exposed or semi-exposed intermediate concrete or timber floors. The product is used to reduce the thermal transmittance of new or existing floors of dwellings or buildings of similar occupancy, type and condition. It can eliminate the need for wet screeds in new floor constructions. It is essential that the floors comply with the conditions set out in the Design Data and Installation parts of this 1 The Building Regulations 2000 (as amended) (England and Wales) The Secretary of State has agreed with the British Board of Agrément the aspects of performance to be used by the BBA in assessing the compliance of floor insulation with the Building Regulations. In the opinion of the BBA, Kingspan Thermafloor TF73, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will meet or contribute to meeting the relevant requirements. Requirement: C2(c) Resistance to moisture A concrete ground floor incorporating the product meets this Requirement provided the floor complies with the conditions set out in sections 7.2, 7.3, 10.1 and 10.4 of this Requirement: L1(a)(i) Conservation of fuel and power The product can enable, or contribute to enabling, a floor to meet this Requirement. See sections 11.1 to 11.6 of this Requirement: Regulation 7 Materials and workmanship The product is acceptable. See section 13 of this 2 The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004 In the opinion of the BBA, Kingspan Thermafloor TF73, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy or contribute to satisfying the various Regulations and related Mandatory Standards as listed below. (2) Technical Handbook (Non-domestic). 3 The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 (as amended) In the opinion of the BBA, Kingspan Thermafloor TF73, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy, or contribute to satisfying, the various Building Regulations as listed below. Regulation: B2 Fitness of materials and workmanship The product is acceptable. 2 Regulation: C4 Resistance to ground moisture and weather Floors incorporating the product can satisfy this Regulation. See sections 7.2 and 7.3 of this Regulation: C5 Condensation A concrete floor covered with the product can satisfy this Regulation. See sections 10.1 and 10.4 of this Regulation: F2(a)(i) Conservation measures The product will enable, or contribute to enabling, a floor to satisfy the requirements. Technical Specification 5 Description 5.1 Kingspan Thermafloor TF73 are flooring insulation boards consisting of a laminate of type P5 interlocking edge chipboard, meeting the requirements of BS EN 312 : 2003 bonded to extruded polystyrene. The insulation is manufactured to the specification defined for extruded polystyrene in BS EN : The product is supplied with the nominal characteristics: work size (mm) 2400 x 600 thickness (chipboard) (mm) 18 thickness (insulation) (mm) 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 compressive strength (insulation) (kpa) >300 weight per board (kg) 19 to 20 6 Delivery and site handling 6.1 The boards are delivered to site on pallets and protected by shrinkwrap. Each pack contains a label bearing the manufacturer s trade name, the BBA identification mark incorporating the number of this Certificate, and identification of the board type and size. 6.2 The boards must be protected from prolonged exposure to sunlight and should be stored either under cover or protected with opaque polythene. Care must be taken to avoid contact with solvents, liquid bitumen or mastic products. 6.3 The boards must be stored flat, protected from the weather and raised above damp surfaces (see also section 14.2). 6.4 The boards must not be exposed to open flame or other ignition sources. 2 Design Data 7 General 7.1 Kingspan Thermafloor TF73 is effective in reducing the U value (thermal transmittance) of new or existing concrete or timber floors. 7.2 Ground-supported floors incorporating the boards must include a suitable dampproof membrane laid in accordance with CP 102 : 1973 (see section 9 of this Certificate). 7.3 Suspended concrete ground floors incorporating the boards must include a dampproof membrane or suitable ventilation (see section 9 of this Certificate). 8 Properties in relation to fire 8.1 The boards do not prejudice the fire resistance properties of the floor. 8.2 When properly installed, the boards will not add significantly to any existing fire hazard. The insulation will be contained within the floor by the chipboard until the chipboard itself is destroyed. Therefore, the boards will not contribute to the development stages of a fire or present a smoke or toxic hazard. Electrical cables running within the polystyrene should be separated from it by enclosing them within a suitable conduit, eg rigid PVC. 9 Moisture penetration 9.1 The boards are not a water vapour control layer. However, they will not allow moisture to cross the completed floor construction. 9.2 For floors subject to national Building Regulations, construction should be as detailed or designed in accordance with:

Northern Ireland Technical Booklet C, Section Condensation Interstitial condensation 10.1 Floors will adequately limit the risk of interstitial condensation when they are designed and constructed in accordance with BS 5250 : 2002, Section 8.5 and Appendix D When the product is used above the dpm on a ground-supported floor, or on a beam-andblock floor, a vapour control layer is installed on the warm side of the insulation to inhibit the risk of interstitial condensation on the upper slab surface For a timber suspended ground floor, it is not necessary to introduce a vapour control layer as long as adequate sub-floor cross ventilation is provided. Surface condensation 10.4 Floors will adequately limit the risk of surface condensation when the thermal transmittance (U value) does not exceed 0.7 Wm 2 K 1 at any point and the junctions with walls are designed in accordance with the relevant requirements of Limiting thermal bridging and air leakage : Robust construction details for dwellings and similar buildings TSO 2002 or BRE Information Paper IP 1/06 Assessing the effects of thermal bridging at junctions and around openings Floors will adequately limit the risk of surface condensation when the thermal transmittance (U value) does not exceed 1.2 Wm 2 K 1 at any point. Guidance may be obtained from Section 8 of BS 5250 : 2002 and BRE report (BR 262 : 2002) Thermal insulation : avoiding risks. 11 Thermal insulation 11.1 Calculations of the thermal transmittance (U value) of specific floor constructions should be carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO : 1998, BS EN ISO 6946 : 1997 and BRE report (BR 443 : 2006) Conventions for U-value calculations, using a thermal conductivity ( 90/90 value) for the boards as declared by the Certificate holder, may be taken as of Wm 1 K The U value of a floor containing this product will depend on the thickness of the board, the perimeter/area ratio and the use of the product. Example U values are shown in Table 1. The product can therefore contribute to enabling a building to meet the Target Emission Rate average improvements of 20% (dwellings) and 23 to 28% (buildings other than dwellings): England and Wales As specified in Approved Documents L1A and L2A Northern Ireland As specified in Technical Booklets F1 and F2. 4 Target Emission Rate calculations to SAP 2005 or the Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) When installed in floors of existing buildings, the product can meet, or contribute to meet, the relevant requirements of the following guidance documents: England and Wales As specified in Approved Documents L1B, section 2 and L2B, section 3 Northern Ireland As specified in Technical Booklets F1 and F2, section Subject to the selection of an appropriate board thickness, floors can satisfy the Elemental target U value of 0.25 Wm 2 K 1 specified in Table 1, clause of the Technical Handbooks The product can maintain or contribute to maintaining, continuity of thermal insulation at junctions between the floor and other building elements. Guidance in BRE report (BR 262 : 2002) is acceptable Before laying the boards, preservativetreated twin battens are fixed at doorways and to support partitions. Adequate time should be allowed for CCA-based preservative to be fixed and the solvents from the solvent-based preservatives to evaporate During construction, the boards must also be protected from damage by moisture from water sources, eg spillage, plaster droppings and traffic Where there is a likelihood of regular water spillage, eg in rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, shower and utility rooms, additional chipboard protection should be considered, for example a continuous flexible vinyl sheet flooring turned up at abutments with welded joints and cove skirting. Ground-supported concrete floors (Figure 1) 14.6 The concrete floor slab over which the boards are to be laid should be left as long as possible to maximise drying out and dissipation of constructional moisture, in accordance with BS 8203 : 2001, Section Figure 1 Ground-supported concrete floor 12 Floor loading 12.1 The design loadings for self-contained dwelling units, as defined in BS : 1996, are: intensity of distributed load (kpa) 1.5 concentrated load (kn) The boards can support these design loadings without undue compression of the insulant A BRE survey of imposed floor loading in domestic buildings (see BRE Current Paper No 2/77 Floor loadings in domestic buildings the results of a survey), indicated that loadings in flats are commonly in the region of 0.6 kpa and loadings of 1.5 kpa are normally associated with fixed items. 13 Durability The insulation is rot-proof and dimensionally stable. The product will remain effective as an insulating material for the life of the building in which it is incorporated. Installation 14 General 14.1 To limit the risk of damage from condensation and other sources of dampness, Kingspan Thermafloor TF73 boards should only be laid after the construction is glazed and/or substantially weathertight Boards should be acclimatised on site by laying them where they are to be installed for several days before fixing. dpm compressible filler Kingspan Thermafloor TF73 concrete hardcore 14.7 The floor surface should be smooth and flat to within 5 mm when measured with a 3 m straight-edge. Irregularities greater than this must be removed. Minor irregularities (up to 10 mm deep) may be levelled with mortar A suitable damp-proof membrane, in accordance with CP 102 : 1973, should be incorporated to resist moisture from the ground. If a liquid-type damp-proof membrane is applied to the slabs, it should be of a type compatible with extruded polystyrene and be allowed to dry out fully before laying the boards. Other types of concrete floor (Figure 2) 14.9 The boards can be used on beam and block suspended concrete floors, designed and installed to the precast concrete and general loading codes, that have been assessed as suitable. Floors installed in accordance with a current Agrément Certificate are also suitable. 4

5 Figure 2 dpc Suspended concrete floor compressible filler void 75 mm minimum Kingspan Thermafloor TF73 concrete Exposed or semi-exposed intermediate timber floors Prior to installing the boards, the floor should be inspected thoroughly for possible defects and its condition should meet the recommendations of BS 8201 : 1987, Section Procedure 15.1 The boards are laid with staggered crossjoints The laying pattern should ensure that all cut edges are at the perimeter of the floor or some other feature, eg mat wells, thresholds or access ducts Where there are long, uninterrupted lengths of floor, eg corridors, proprietary expansion joints should be installed at intervals on the basis of a 2 mm gap per metre run of board An expansion gap between the boards and the perimeter walls should be provided at the rate of 2.5 mm per metre run or a minimum of 10 mm, whichever is the greater. For large areas (above 35 m 2 ) and in corridors, intermediate expansion gaps are required at approximately 6 m intervals As each board is laid, a waterproof PVA adhesive is applied continuously to the top and bottom of the chipboard joints and the boards are then interlocked Once the floor has been laid, temporary wedges are inserted between the walls and the floor to maintain tight joints until the adhesive has set. These are then removed A suitable compressible filler, eg pieces of extruded polystyrene or foamed polyethylene, should be fitted around the perimeter of the floor between the boards and the walls before the skirting boards are affixed. 16 Incorporation of services General 16.1 The boards must not be used in direct contact with electrical heating cables or hot water pipes. Ground-supported concrete slabs 16.2 Electrical conduits, gas and water pipes or other services should, where possible, be contained within ducts or channels within the concrete slab. Where this is not possible, the services may be accommodated within the insulation, provided they are securely fixed to the concrete slab (see section 8.2). Electrical cables should be enclosed in a suitable conduit. With hot pipes, the insulation must be cut back to maintain an air space Where water pipes are installed, either within the slab or the insulation, they must be lagged with close fitting pipe insulation, eg extruded polyethylene foam In situations where access to the services is desirable, a duct may be formed by mechanically fixing, to the floor, timber bearers of the same thickness as the insulation to provide support for a chipboard cover. The duct should be as narrow as possible and not exceed 400 mm in width without intermediate support. Suspended beam and block floors 16.5 Where the boards are installed on a floor of a suspended beam and block design, all services must be appropriately installed so as not to impair the performance of floors, for example in accordance with the Agrément Certificate for that floor (see section 14.9). Timber intermediate floors 16.6 All the services should be incorporated beneath the existing floor. 5

It must be read in conjunction with BBA Certificate No 01/3813. It will remain valid provided BBA Certificate No 01/3813 is valid.
