In-Service Forcemain Condition Assessment Tim Ross and Reid McDougall TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY ROADSHOW May 28-29, 2014 Scotiabank Convention Centre, Niagara Falls, ON
Agenda Project background & planning EM assessment of CPP C301 (PCCP) and C303 (BWP) Planning and execution Calibration exercise Project results Conclusions & recommendations
Project Background Flow reversal project in 2012 CH2M Hill and the City of Calgary 2 forcemains flowing north Southbound flow considered Project criteria Condition assessment of the forcemains Forcemains must remain in service during inspections AWWA C 301 and C 303 Pipe Project / Logistical Considerations Tool insertion Tool retrieval Pipeline details plans Maintaining sufficient flow Identification of inline valves Tool tracking during inspection
Project Planning Total inspection: 12,096 m 750 mm diameter FM Mostly PCCP and BWP twinned section of HDPE Constructed 1985 and 1993 Flow reversal in consideration of moving flow to Pine Creek WWTP
Concrete Pressure Pipe C 301(L) C 303 Signs of Deterioration Leaks Prestressing Wire Breaks Bar Breaks Internal Cracking Delamination Corroded Steel Cylinder
EM Primer Exciter Coil Current creates a magnetic field Prestressing Wires Magnetic field from the exciter induces a current in the prestressing wires Detector Coil The current in the prestressing wires creates a magnetic field which induces a current in the detector coil Amplitude: The strength of the detector signal Phase: The time that it takes for the signal to go from the Exciter to the Detector Signal is sensitive to pipeline properties (wire spacing, diameter, cylinder thickness, etc ) Signals are compared against a baseline signal for similar pipes. Simulated wire breaks and cylinder damage are used to create a calibration curve
PipeDiver Inspection Platform Free swimming tool Battery module Remote field transformer coupling module Tracking module Neutrally buoyant uses flexible fins Flexible body design Insertion under live or temporary depressurized conditions
Tool Insertion Anderson L/S Insertion at Anderson Lift Station Plug Valve Removed and PipeDiver Insertion
Tool Insertion Fish Creek WWTP Plug Valve to be Removed for PipeDiver Insertion
Inspection Tool Tracking A total of 12,096 m inspected 1,605 pipe segments Leap frog tracking teams ~1 hour from Anderson LS ~3 hours from Fish Creek
Tool Extraction Bonnybrook Forcemain Discharge Channel Tool Removed
Tool Extraction Bonnybrook Eager Anticipation! Despair Sets In!
Tool Extraction Bonnybrook Unknown interconnect chamber in the gravity main Tool Located on Private Property inside Interconnect Chamber Tool Extraction
