4 Cement and Concrete Cement, a binding material used in construction and engineering, often called hydraulic cement, typically made by heating a mixture of limestone and clay until it almost fuses and then grinding it to a fine powder. When mixed with water, the silicates and aluminates in the cement undergo a chemical reaction; the resulting hardened mass is then impervious to water. It may also be mixed with water and aggregates (crushed stone, sand, and gravel) to form concrete Concrete is a very strong and versatile mouldable construction material. It consists of cement, sand and aggregate mixed with water. When these ingredients are mixed together, they form a fluid mass that is easily molded into shape. Over time, the cement forms a hard matrix which binds the rest of the ingredients together into a durable stone-like material. Often, additives and reinforcements (such as rebar) are included in the mixture to achieve the desired physical properties of the finished material. Concrete is one of the most used materials in the construction industry. Therefore, concrete quality must accurately be tested for any building realization. Several variables contribute to define the quality of the concrete utilized for a structure. The workability, the consistency, strength, elasticity, hardness, setting time and the air content are only few examples. The necessary cement properties are achieved by correctly planning the raw material mix and ensuring the specified composition during the production process with respect to chemical composition, the quality and quantity of minerals included in the clinker, and the quality and quantity of substances included in the finished cement. Correct planning of the raw material mix is crucial to ensuring the proper progression through the intermediate stages of clinker formation, completion of the burning process, and good economic indicators for production. The quality of the finished cement is monitored on the basis of the requirements of the appropriate All-Union State Standards. Several variables contribute to define the quality of the cement. Density, Fineness, Soundness, Consistency, Setting time, Compressive strength and heat of hydration are only few examples. Torontech Advance Cement and Concrete Testing Technologies allow laboratories all over the world to test and evaluate cement and concrete mixtures to ensure their strength and safety. These standards help to identify the various properties of cement & concrete. General Applications Cement is primarily used to produce concrete, the world s most versatile and durable construction material. Cement mortars are used for binding bricks, blocks, and stone in walls or as surface renderings. Mixtures of soil and cement are used as a base for roads. Cement also is used in the manufacture of bricks, tiles, shingles, pipes, beams, railroad ties, and various extruded products. Some other applications for cement, however, are now growing in importance.one of these is solidification/stabilization (S/S) a widely used technique for the management and disposal of a broad range of contaminated materials and wastes, including radioactive wastes. Cement is mixed into the contaminated substance, immobilizing the contaminants and preventing them from migrating to plants, animals or humans. The process is most often used to reclaim polluted industrial sites for redevelopment or recreational use. Concrete is used to shape the infrastructure of the modern world and used in large quantities almost everywhere mankind has a need for infrastructure. Concrete is widely used for making architectural structures, foundations, brick/block walls, pavements, bridges/overpasses, highways, runways, parking structures, dams, pools/reservoirs, pipes, footings for gates, fences and poles and even boats. Concrete production is the process of mixing together the various ingredients water, aggregate, cement, and any additives to produce concrete. Concrete production is time-sensitive. Once the ingredients are mixed, workers must put the concrete in place before it hardens. In modern usage, most concrete production takes place in a large type of industrial facility called a concrete plant, or often a batch plant. Satisfactory concrete construction and performance requires concrete with specific properties. To assure that these properties are obtained, quality control and acceptance testing are indispensable parts of the construction process. Test results provide important feedback used to base decisions regarding mix adjustments. Torontech Advanced Testing Technologies are the most reliable and cost-effective solutions for Cement and Concrete Testing. Torontech offers you a complete selection of testing machines and systems for cement and concrete testing. We are able to supply an extensive range of competitive solutions such as Compression & Flexure testing machines with accessories and advanced software developed especially for tests, the widest range of cement and concrete testing machines for determining physical and chemical properties of Cement as well as Fresh and Hardened Concrete testing machines complying to various National and International standards. 2
