1 Photo of Department building DEPARTMENT OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING About The Department The Department of Earthquake Engineering started as School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) in 1960 and was renamed as Department of Earthquake Engineering in It is internationally recognized as a leading centre of Earthquake Engineering and is actively engaged in teaching, training, research, development and consultancy. The Department offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees and electives at undergraduate level. The Department also conducts short-terms courses for training of teachers and professionals in the area of Earthquake Engineering. The Department has played a key role in providing consultancy services to a large number of government and non-government organizations on major engineering projects involving earthquake resistant design of structures and equipment of various types. These include nuclear, hydro and thermal power projects, refinery and industrial complexes, major concrete, masonry and earth dams, bridges, multistoried buildings and many other special structures. The department provides major inputs in the formulation of Indian Standard codes of practice related to Earthquake Engineering. The Department also houses the headquarters of the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology. Department is currently engaged in several important studies such as Seismic Microzonation of Mega Cities, Seismic Hazard and Risk, System Identification of Structures, Earthquake Response Analysis, Seismic evaluation and vulnerability assessment; and seismic retrofitting of structures, Structure Response Control, Seismic base isolation of buildings, Inelastic Seismic analysis and Performance Based Seismic Design (PBSD).

(Structural Dynamics): This PG program is aimed at complementing and augmenting the basic training imparted in UG Civil Engineering curriculum to design structures for dynamic loads. While the primary emphasis is on the design for earthquake effects, the training equips the students to handle any dynamic problem, such as, strong winds, machine induced vibrations etc. M.Tech. (Soil Dynamics): This PG program focuses on all the important aspects of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in addition to other areas of Soil Dynamics. The curriculum covers dynamic soil properties, ground response analysis, liquefaction of soils, seismic stability of slopes and retaining walls, earthquake resistant design of foundations, seismic ground improvement techniques and machine foundatios. M.Tech. (Seismic Vulnerability and Risk Assessment): This PG program has been started from the current academic session This program aims to provide students with a robust appreciation of Earthquake Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk and cater to the needs of major industries, large engineering projects and utilities, infrastructure, urban population, economy and society at large.

Wason Earthquakes do not kill people, structurally unsound buildings do Almost 59 percent of Indian landmass is prone to earthquakes and associated societal aspects necessitate trained human resource development. It gives me pleasure to give an insight to the PG programmes offered by the Department of Earthquake Engineering, a unique department of its kind in the country, which bears an interdisciplinary character and is closely linked with the practical earthquake resistant design of structures. These programmes with specialisation in 'Structural Dynamics', 'Soil Dynamics' and 'Seismic Vulnerability and Risk Assessment' are designed to enable students have a deeper understanding of practical design problems of structural and geotechnical engineering, and seismic hazard and risk assessment and train them in meeting the challenges of real life problems faced by industry in the fields of energy, infrastructure, building and construction, insurance, and risk planning. The Department envisions to produce earthquake engineers well versed with the modern computational tools, techniques and design procedures needed for solving industrial problems.
