Metal Door Frame Maintenance. 74

Metal Door Frame Maintenance Introduction. This document is intended to give general advise on maintenance of steel door frames. In general, it should be noted that the type of maintenance of steel door frames is dependant upon the use and location within a building. Correct maintenance of steel door frames is necessary to obtain the maximum service life and functionality. In applications where the steel door frame is part of a fire rated doorset, smoke doorset or both, proper maintenance is important due to Human life safety. Therefore maintenance of steel door frames that are associated with human life safety is crucial to ensure the proper functionality in an emergency. Inspection. Steel door frames inspection is dependant upon the application within a building. A maintenance program should be established by the personnel responsible for building maintenance. This could be a building owner, maintenance department and insurance company or regulatory authority. Since steel door frames are located in different areas of a building, traffic flow may differ and this would influence the frequency of periodic inspections. Hinge preparation/hinges. Backing plate preparation Ensure that hinges screwed to the backing plate are not loose. Hinges In circumstances where the hinges are welded to the steel door frame, please check for loose attaching screws, pin wear or other notable defects. Striker Plates. The striker plate should be firmly attached to the frame. For single doors this is firmly attached to the striker stile and for double doors this will be found in the head of the frame where applicable. Check for loose screws and other notable defects. 75

Architectural Door Frames Maintenance Special hardware. If any special hardware is installed, please check for loose screws, and defects of the preparation of the special lock, hinge or pivot. Steel Door frame finish. A visual inspection of the steel door frame finish should be conducted in accordance to the maintenance plan. Defects that are found on the surface of the steel door frame should be repaired and repainted. During this process care should be taken to give adequate protection to the surface of the steel door frame to prevent the steel door frame from corrosion and decreasing its service life. Fire rated frames. Steel door frames that are part of a fire rated door set should be inspected with Compliance with AS Fire Rated Doorsets. Please refer to this standard for inspection guidelines. 76

Back Filling Fire Rated Metal Door Frames and Fire Rating Information Pro Industries recommend back filling all metal door frames in fire rating requirement situations. Backfilling will also enhance the acoustic performance of the wall and door system. Any shift from this practice must be supported by the fire door manufacturer, who will control certification and support this with appropriate fire test data and certification. There are several methods of backfilling fire door frames including using non-shrink Mortar/Cement/Grout; Fire Rated Plasterboard strips, Vermiculite or Casting Plaster. When a fire door frame is built into a plasterboard wall, it should be backfilled with fire rated plasterboard strips or suitable fire protectant, prior to installing into the wall. Unfortunately, it is not possible to fill frames in plaster walls post installation unless able to pump a suitable backfilling product into the frame cavities totally. Back filling during installation ensures all the frame cavities are filled. The backfilling process is conducted by the frame installer at time of installation. In all cases it is imperative that the backfilling medium is tightly packed and all available airspace is completely filled. Further, the finished backfilled frame must be tightly sealed against the surrounding opening it is being fitted to using an approved fire rated sealant. There has been a high level of confusion in the marketplace regarding whether to backfill frames for fire doors. In 2005, there were changes made to Australian Building Code Standards (AS1530.4) that required measurement of temperature rise on the fire door frame, as well as the fire door itself, when subjected to the standard fire door test. Consequently, the frame needed to be insulated to ensure it met the temperature rise requirements. Frames for fire doors were originally backfilled to insulate them and stop them from deforming and deflecting under the stress of the standard fire door test. However, accumulated test knowledge and test results had proven that backfilling was not always necessary, as the frame s performance is influenced by the performance of the wall. It is this ongoing research and development, the push from the construction industry for reduced building costs, and no requirement for measurement of the temperature rise of the door frame that led to hollow or unfilled frames being acceptable. Fire door manufacturers must provide suitable documentation to support any decision to not backfill the metal door frame. Pro Industries recommends all metal door frames are backfilled with a suitable material. Fire door frames Steel door frames will be fabricated from zincanneal mild steel or stainless steel and display the proven fire resistance level on a tag as described in AS/NZS , [applicable year]. Steel heavy duty hinges are to be used on all fire door frames. All screw fixed hinges will be fully recessed into the frame. All welded hinges will be slotted in behind the frame and projection mig welded to the back of the frame. All hinge and hardware preparations will have mortar box protection in place. All fire door frames will be fixed to an approved fire rated wall in accordance with AS/NZS , [applicable year]. 77

Fire Doors Marking ( Tagging ) Fire Resistant Doorsets 1. BACKGROUND: Upon the completed installation of a Fire Resistant Doorset there is requirement under the Australian Standard AS for marking the installation to demonstrate compliance this requirement is also referred to in industry as tagging. Problems arise with fire resistant doorsets being tagged by parties who have not been involved with the manufacture or installation and lack understanding of how the doorset has been made and the particular requirements for certification. The actual marking is undertaken with fixing a metal tag to the fire resistant doorset and providing specific information on the Tag as required in AS

2. COMPLETED INSTALLATION: Why does the completed doorset installation need to be tagged? There are a number of requirements to ensure a fire resistant doorset complies with the appropriate Australian Standard and with the Building Code of Australia (BCA). By fixing a metal tag to the edge of the door leaf and to the door frame by the manufacturer or the certifier when the installation is complete, confirms compliance with: Hardware has been installed in accordance with the specified instructions of the relevant manufacturer; Hinges are correctly aligned; The doorset latches satisfactorily from the fully open position and from any intermediary position; If a closer is fitted, demonstrated action as specified clause of AS ; On the basis of evidence of test, or the opinion of a registered testing authority, or both, and evidence of manufacturer to the specifications of the tested specimen, the doorset complies with all requirements of AS ; and The clearances as specified in Clause of AS have been met Compliance with these requirements also requires the party who is responsible for certifying the doorset installation be authorised to act on behalf of the manufacturer. 3. THE METAL TAG: The following is an example of the information required on a compliant doorset, to be stamped on a metal tag FIRE DOOR TO AS FRL/60/30 MANUFACTURED BY (COMPANY NAME) PTY LTD APPLICANT (NAME) CERTIFIER (COMPANY NAME) PTY LTD DOOR TAG NUMBER-G 001 YEAR OF MANUFACTURE-2007 Metal Tags have certain provision that include a minimum size of 50mm X 25mm and marked with either, etching, embossing or stamping the required information so that it is not less that 0.25mm above or below the surface of the tag and using alphabetic or numeric characters not less than 1.5mm high. Applicant relates to the doorset be tested in accordance with AS and can nominate any of the following; a company, corporation, organisation, association, partnership, individual or manufacturers registered agent who sponsors the test. Certifier is a person or organisation authorised to act on behalf of the manufacturer who assumes the responsibility of approving the installation of a fire resistant doorset. Location of tags will be 1.5 m above floor level and in the case of sliding doors be fixed to the trailing edge of the door leaf, for side hung doorsets to the hinge stile of the door leaf and for two leafed doorsets each leaf is required to be tagged. 80

Understanding Fire Ratings The two words, fire rating, together are probably the most misused term when we look at Passive Fire Protection. If we consider the requirements of the Building Code of Australia, which most Australian Buildings need to comply with, the correct term for fire ratings is the Fire Resistance Level, commonly abbreviated as FRL. It is important to understand what the different components of an FRL are, as well as how they are determined and what they mean to passive fire protection. What is an FRL? The Fire Resistance Level (FRL) is a grading period, represented by the time in minutes without any failures, for the following AS1530 Part 4 fire test failure criteria (expressed in a particular order): Structural Adequacy Integrity Insulation The FRL is expressed as: Structural Adequacy/Integrity /Insulation (SA/INT/INS). Examples: FRL Structural Adequacy Integrity Insulation 60/60/60 60 minutes 60 minutes 60 minutes -/120/30 0 minutes ** 120 minutes 30 minutes. Fire Resistance Levels (FRLs) This Fast Fact provides clarification on the interpretation of fire resistance levels (FRL) as specified in the Australian Standard AS3959 Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas and the Building Code of Australia (BCA). FRL s are extensively used as a performance indicator throughout the BCA and the AS3959. The NSW Rural Fire Service now recognises FRL s as a performance indicator for elements of construction. AS3959 defines the FRL as the nominal grading period, in minutes, that is determined by subjecting a representative specimen to the standard time temperature curve regime as set out by Australian Standard AS Methods for fire tests on building materials, components and structures - Fire-resistance test of elements of construction (AS1530.4) to specify: Structural Adequacy The ability of a load bearing element of construction to support a load when tested in accordance with AS Failure for structural adequacy is deemed to have occurred when the element collapses or the rate of deflection for the element is in excess of prescribed limits. Integrity The ability of an element of construction to resist the passage of flames COMMUNITY RESILIENCE FAST FACTS 5/08 and hot gases from one space to another when tested in accordance with AS Failure for integrity criteria is deemed to occur when continuous flaming occurs on the nonexposed side of the test specimen, or when cracks, fissures and other openings through which hot flames and gases can pass through are present. Insulation - The ability of an element of construction to maintain a temperature on the surface that is not exposed to the furnace, below the limits specified, when tested in accordance with AS Failure for insulation criteria is deemed to have occurred when the temperature rise of the non exposed side exceeds predetermined thresholds. The FRL is expressed in the above order (i.e. structural adequacy/integrity/insulation). For example, a wall that is required to meet an FRL of 120/60/30 means that the wall must maintain structural adequacy for 120 minutes, integrity for 60 minutes and insulation for 30 minutes, as tested to AS A dash in the FRL means that there is no requirement for that criterion. For more information regarding the determination of fire resistance levels (FRL), refer to AS Disclaimer: Any representation, statement opinion, or advice expressed or implied in this publication is made in good faith on the basis that the State of New South Wales, the NSW Rural Fire Service, its agents and employees are not liable (whether by reason of negligence, lack of care or otherwise) to any person for any damage or loss whatsoever which has occurred or may occur in relation to that person taking or not taking (as the case may be) action in respect of any representation, statement or advice referred to above 81
