7 DUST IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY The construction workforce in the EU countries is ~20M Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) found in varying amounts in most rock, sand and clay. Sandstone 70% Silica, Granite 15-30%. Silica major component in bricks, tiles, concrete and mortar Silica now recognised as biggest Health Risk after Asbestos Prolonged exposure to RCS can cause lung cancer, and lead to other serious respiratory disease : - Silicosis usually follows exposure over a prolonged period of time - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) a group of diseases including bronchitis and emphysema Around 4000* deaths annually due to COPD resulting from past workplace exposures *Source: Health and Safety executive website 7

8 WHY DUST IS A PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION Generating Dust Produced by many construction processes e.g. drilling, chiseling, slitting, sanding, grinding Dust Impact Short-term Visibility conditions Concentration Many base materials contain hazardous material e.g. silica/quartz in concrete, mortar, bricks & blocks, wood dust in hardwood, softwood, MDF and chipboard) Health affects; E.g. cancer, lung disease and asthma for people exposed to dust in their work environment Risk of injuries Long-term Respiratory diseases Silicosis Lung cancer 8

9 CURRENT REGULATIONS Legal workplace exposure limits for different dust types: Inhalable Dust (I-Dust) UK COSHH Regulations 2002 Work Exposure Limits (WEL) 10 mg/m 3 Respirable Dust (R-Dust) 4 mg/m 3 Silica (quartz) in Respirable Dust 0.1 mg/m 3 Your maximum daily silica exposure is tiny when compared to a penny. (CIS 69, 2013) 9
