1 2016 World of Construction & Safety The 7th Annual Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo sponsored by Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC) was held September 21-22, 2016 in Mobile, which hosted over 10,000 8 th grade students, teachers, and counselors from eight (8) Southwest Alabama counties. The World of Construction & Safety was one of thirteen industry sectors included. Why 8 th graders? As 8 th grade students move into the 9 th grade, they are asked to pick a career path. Most have no idea what career paths exist much less which one they may be interested in pursuing. This Expo helped give them a preview of the high wage and high demand jobs in Southwest Alabama. As students transition into the 9 th grade they should be better equipped to make an informed decision as to their career pathway. Hopefully this event will open their eyes to the many possibilities that await them following high school graduation. All comments received from students, teachers, counselors, and other event organizers were very positive. The students enjoyed the hands-on exhibits which allowed them to experience something new and exciting. Charlotte Kopf, Coordinator for the World of Construction said There was a tremendous amount of effort put forth by everyone involved but it was certainly worth the effort. If we sparked an interest in just a few of these students concerning the vast array of opportunities construction holds for them, then we have accomplished a great deal and in five years when they graduate high school, we should see results in our workforce. Appreciation is extended to ALL who participated in this very successful event! Special Appreciation is extended to our major financial sponsor ACRI/GoBuild Alabama Coordination of the World of Construction was provided by Alabama AGC Mobile Section Visit GoBuild s website for more information on construction careers: Appreciation to our Co-Chairs of the World of Construction: Lesleigh Smith Performance Contracting Jack White Operators Local #653 Charlotte Kopf Mobile Section, AlabamaAGC Worlds of Opportunity is a project of Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council We are already considering additional hands-on construction exhibits for next year s event. 5 Appreciation Extended to the Partners of the Brickmason Exhibit Scott Beech with Block USA was instrumental in pulling together the partners for the Brickmason Exhibit which included Bricklayers Local Union #8; Faulkner Career Tech Center s Brickmason Class; Riley-Stuart Supply Co., who provided the bricks; and Block USA who provided the block and mortar. A tremendous amount of effort (before and after) was required for this exhibit. On behalf of the World of Construction Planning Committee, we d like to thank all of those partners for working together to make this exhibit a fun and educational experience for the students.

6 Appreciation Extended to Painting/Scaffold Exhibit Partners Appreciation is extended to Brand Services for providing the scaffold; to Denny Manufacturing for providing the canvasses; to Sherwin Williams for providing the paint supplies and volunteers to help work this exhibit and to GoBuild Alabama for allowing us to use their logo to teach students about painting and scaffolds. 7 AGC-YCF Members Teach Students to Build Wood-duck Boxes which were Donated to Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources Members of the Mobile Section, AGC s Young Constructors Forum (YCF) came up with the idea of teaching students to work with lumber and cordless drills by assembling duck boxes which were then donated to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to be placed in the Mobile River Delta, for this year s Carpentry Exhibit. Appreciation was extended to Scott and Matt Cassity with Cassity Bros. Construction and William Akridge with Metal Roofing Supply Center for making arrangements to have the needed items donated and to all sponsors. Kopf said that Mobile County School System was a tremendous resource explaining that the Carpentry Class at Faulkner Career Tech Center taught by Ron Rankins planed down the lumber then using a set of plans, cut the wood and preassembled the boxes. At the expo, 8th graders visiting the exhibit were shown how to assemble and reassemble the boxes using cordless impact drills which were donated by several AGC Member construction firms. Following the expo, the boxes were delivered to Five Rivers Delta Resource Center to be placed in the Mobile River Delta for the Wood Ducks. Our YCF members had a great time introducing the students to the World of Construction and carpentry!
