5 NFRC and Fenestration Rating in RSA 1. In 2006 the AAAMSA Group established the South African Fenestration and Insulation Energy Rating Authority (SAFIERA) 2. SAFIERA is the NFRC representative in South Africa under the administration of AAAMSA. 3. In the Building & Construction Industry it focuses on : a. building envelope research (e.g. Walls and Roofs) b. materials research (e.g. Glass and Insulation) The aim is to reduce heat transfer through the building envelope. Reduce energy usage. Energy efficiency of the building envelope is improved.

6 Fenestration Rating Roadmap in RSA AAAMSA initiated through SABS the adoption of ASTM & NFRC Standards used for determining fenestration performance Set up laboratory for testing of fenestration products via Thermal Testing Laboratory (TTL) DoE/ DoH & AAAMSA have entered a collaborative agreement. Laboratory will be moved to SABS and expanded to full Building Envelope Testing Service (BETS) Measurement & Verification of test results via SAFIERA Incorporated into Energy Efficiency Regulations

7 Fenestration Rating Roadmap in RSA Still to be achieved: Provide energy ratings for fenestration products Administer an independent, 3rd party certification and labelling program via SANAS Certified Products Directory - Energy information on thousands of fenestration products

8 The Fenestration Rating Process in RSA 1. Glass suppliers must submit samples to PFG Building Glass (NFRC Accredited Lab) for testing. 2. Spectral optical properties are measured and submitted to South African Glass Data Base (SAGDB) if not registered on IGDB. 3. Simulation software developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory USA used for simulation: OPTICS - determine spectral data of glazing products THERM analysis of two-dimensional heat transfer through building products WINDOW analysis of window thermal performance

9 Why Testing & Rating in RSA is Important 1. Verify compliance with the National Building Regulation SANS 10400:XA Energy Usage in Buildings 2. EE Building Envelope is eligible to apply for the 12L EE Tax incentive which is a benefit to consumers 3. Assists professionals to make informed decisions during rational design 4. Promotes energy efficiency by providing a base line for product development and improvement 5. Provides performance comparison

13 Energy performance certificates for buildings This standard specifies the requirements for producing energy performance certificates (EPCs) for buildings that compare the energy performance of the building to a reference energy consumption

14 Achievements so far 3 Continued Professional Development. Thermal Simulation Training Workshop sponsored by SANEDI, NFRC and AAAMSA in February 2014

15 Capacity Building Training It is necessary to validate computer-modelling results against physical testing as a means of reality checking. Simulation can also address the many permutations of size and configuration which exist within any range of products, whether aluminium, steel, upvc or timber. Addressed at the workshop was the computer modelling program THERM, WINDOW and OPTICS through which simulation is carried out.

17 US DoE Delegation visits RSA in January 2012 AAAMSA was privileged to receive a delegation from US DOE on 15 January 2012, whom paid a visit to the Rotatable Guarded Hot Box.
