1 2 Solid Decking P roduct Description Species: Douglas Fir, Alaska Cedar, Western Red Cedar, Ponderosa Pine. Timberweld inventories Select Grade Douglas Fir. Special Products: FSC Douglas fir is available. Other FSC Western species are subject to Grades: Select most common where appearance is a consideration. This grade may contain occasional small knots or minor characteristics that do not detract from the overall appearance. Available in most Western species. Commercial & 2 & Better, run to pattern available with Nominal Size: Typical length assortment for 2 decking when supplied for a Controlled Random Length layup: Not less than 40% to be 14 and longer Not more than 10% to be less than 10 Not more than 1% to be 4-5 Minimum length is limited to 75% of the span lengths (i.e. for 8 support spacing, 6 ) Patterns: Standard Vee. Other patterns may be available upon Lengths: Random 6 to 20. Specified lengths are available on Surface Textures: Smooth face available, with samples available on request. Samples of rough sawn or other textures are available upon Moisture Content: 10% to 12% average, maximum 15%. Factory Finishing: Available in factory applied oil or water based semi-transparent colors. See Timberweld stain chart

2 Allowable Uniform Loads Random Length Continuous A random length continuous configuration is applied over three or more spans. It is the most common method of applying solid decking and the most economical. This configuration allows the use of mixed lengths of material on a variety of span conditions. Providing high structural efficiency as well as attractive appearance. 2 Solid Decking D esign Estimating Factors and Footage Conversion Nominal Size Actual Sizes Cross sectional properties are per running foot. Bending stress capacity relates to 2-month duration. It is not exceeded when the listed loads are applied based on recognized decking formulas.. Span/loads shown assume compliance to layup rules described elsewhere

4 RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS 2 Solid Laminated Decking H andling and Storage Before Unloading: 1. Carefully inspect condition of units of material while still on truck. If the material has been damaged in transit, note the type of damage and the number of units involved on the driver s bill of lading or delivery receipt before you accept delivery. If you can learn from the driver how the damage occurred, record this information as well. During Unloading: 1. 2 solid decking is appearance quality material and proper care must be exercised during the unloading operation. If delivery is made by truck, the material has been shipped in units which can be unloaded only by forklift or crane. If slings are used, extra blocking on the edges of the units will be necessary to protect the fragile edges of the material. 2. During the unloading process, tally the material (the lengths and number of pieces are written on each unit) and compare your tally against the tally supplied with the shipping documentation. Immediately report all discrepancies to your supplier.. If the shipment contains material destined for more than one jobsite, be absolutely certain that the units removed at your site are marked specifically for your project. JOBSITE STORAGE AND HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Select a storage site which is reasonable level and away from high traffic areas where the material could be damaged by vehicles or equipment. Indoor storage is preferable to outside locations, especially if the material must sit for more than a week to ten days. 2. Do not store the material directly on the ground. Select an area which will remain as dry as possible and keep the material stored in the original units whenever possible Place the units or stacks of material on blocking which raises the material at least 6 above the ground. Space the blocking under the units at intervals necessary to eliminate sag or deflection. The units or stacks should not be perfectly flat, but rather slightly sloped to allow for proper drainage. Also, be certain that the blocking is aligned vertically to insure that the weight of the material is properly transferred directly to the supporting structure.. Factory applied paper wrap is intended for protection during transit only. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO SERVE AS PROTECTION DURING JOBSITE STORAGE. The packages are not necessarily watertight nor abrasion proof. ADDITIONAL JOBSITE MOISTURE PROTECTION IS NECESSARY AND IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CUSTOMER. The stored material should be covered with a waterproof barrier on the top, sides and ends of the stack. Air spaces of at least 2 should be left between the material and the vapor barrier on all sides to allow for proper ventilation. Without this space, moisture can form between the inside of the vapor barrier and the surface of the decking, leading to moisture related damage. Do not allow the vapor barrier to touch the ground. 4. When the material is delivered in units, do not stack the material more than three units high. Stacks higher than three units are not only unstable, the excess weight can cause damage to the bottom units. 5. Prolonged jobsite storage is not recommended. This material is extremely dry and even stored properly, it can absorb moisture under wet conditions. When the moisture content increases, the width of the pieces will begin to vary, resulting in a difficult erection process. Timberweld cannot accept responsibility for these moisture related size changes

5 READ CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING 1. The first course of decking usually starts either at the eave line or in the valleys between ridges. Use longer length of decking for this first course to provide stability for the course and to make the ensuing courses easier to install. 2. The tongue of the first course and all the subsequent courses always faces up the slope.. At each support, each piece of 2 decking shall be toe-nailed through the tongue and face-nailed with one nail per support, using 16d common nails. 4. If the installation layup is specified as Controlled Random Length Layup, follow Random Length Continuous Layup rules for disbursement of the end joints and nailing procedures. a. To provide lateral restraint for the supporting members, the pieces in at least the first 2 courses must bear on a minimum of 2 supports with the end joints in these 2 courses occurring over alternate supports. A maximum of seven intervening courses is allowed before a pattern is repeated. If some other provision, such as plywood overlayment, is made to provide continuity, this pattern is not necessary. b. Each piece of decking must cross at least one support. c. The distance between end joints in adjacent rows of decking is at least two feet. Joints in the same general line (within 6 of being in line each way) shall be separated by at least two intervening courses. d. When the overhang does not exceed 18, no special considerations are needed for layup. The maximum cantilever length for controlled random layup is 0. times the length of the adjacent span. For cantilever overhangs exceeding the normal overhand but not exceeding the maximum, a structural fascia attached to each decking piece is to maintain a continuously straight roof line. Also, there shall be no end joints in the cantilevered portion or within 1/2 of the span (L/2) of the outer support. 5. The 2 solid decking is not predrilled because no lateral spiking is required. Do not attempt to use these spikes as they are unnecessary. 6. Protect the decking from moisture at all times. Dryin the decking as frequently as possible and especially at the end of each day s work. 2 Solid Decking I nstallation Instructions (for typical applications)
