Agricultural Research in Himachal Pradesh: A Profile based on AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB and FSTA CD-ROM databases Nabi Hasan and Sewa Singh Presents an assessment of contributions on Himachal Pradesh to agriculture and allied fields, based on publications, indexed in AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB Abstracts and FSTA CD-ROM databases during Attempts to provide detailed analysis of 2,451 contributions on Himachal Pradesh covered by the databases of the study period. This macroscopic study tries to answer questions such as which institutions are carrying out the research, in which journals, contributions on Himachal get published, in what sub-fields the contributors are strong, and so on. The paper maps the field under the following heads; quantum of production, form-wise distribution, authorship pattern, institutions, ranking of periodicals, subject dispersion, citation study, length of publications, languages of publications, languages of summaries, country-wise productivity, statewise productivity and classification by journal impact factor. KEYWORDS/DESCRITORS: Himachal Pradesh-Agricultural literary output; CD-ROM databases; Bibliometric study; Mapping of Agriculture 1. INTRODUCTION The Himachal Pradesh embraces an area of 55,673 square kms, out of which, cropped area is only thousand hectares and about 71% of the main workers are engaged in agricultural pursuits. A lot of research and experiments are being conducted by the scientists of state to improve the existing level of standard in various agricultural and allied fields (Himachal Pradesh, 2003). In the era of information explosion, it is not possible for a researcher to scan all the pieces of information generated, to extract the relevant one. Thus, there is need for bibliographic control of literature contributed to the agricultural and allied sciences on Himachal Pradesh. If one wants to capture all publications originating on Himachal in the field, ideally one has to search the varied sources, which would be pretty difficult, if not impossible. The best alternative then is to search a database(s), dedicated/related to the field. If one wants to map agricultural research in India, one would have to look at database(s) like; AGRICOLA, AGRIS, Assistant Librarian cum Library System Administrator, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur (Himachal Pradesh), India. nabihasan@rediffmail.com ; library@hillagric.org Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (Punjab), India. sewasingh_gndu@yahoo.com

CAB Abstracts or FSTA. Incidentally, no database can capture everything that is published in a field. There are always some conference held or some obscure journal or newsletter published from a remote corner of the world. Besides, databases have policies on what will be included and what will not be, call it a threshold of quality. One way to overcome this problem is to search more than one database. The combining of two or more databases will capture a higher proportion of the publications that one wants to capture. This study maps agricultural research on Himachal Pradesh, contributed by the persons working in the state and others, came out in the years and included in AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB and FSTA CD-ROM databases. 2. SCOPE AND COVERAGE Considering the voluminous data available in the CD-ROM databases under study, i.e. AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB and FSTA, the following things were considered and decisions were taken that: the research is based on literature included in the CAB Abstracts, AGRIS, AGRICOLA and FSTA databases. The CD-ROM versions of these databases were used as the source data. The databases are international in coverage with input from more than 146 countries and in over 70 different languages the study includes all types/ forms of the literature the focus of study is on quantum of production, form-wise distribution, authors, institutions, ranking of periodicals, subject dispersion, citation study, length of publications, languages, languages of summaries, country-wise productivity, state-wise productivity of the literature and classification by journal impact factor the study is confined to the literary contribution on Himachal Pradesh by the persons and institutions from and outside the Himachal Pradesh 2

3. METHODOLOGY The output of research publications is a good indicator, reflecting the structure and trend of any subject. The mapping of literature of a discipline over a period of time depicts the changes in the cognitive structure and composition of the discipline. For this macroscopic study, the authors identified all the publications on Himachal Pradesh, indexed in the CD-ROM edition of AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB and FSTA databases. The databases were searched for records, published on discipline for the year , using Boolean operator OR. Merely giving "Himachal" as the search term for even all the fields was not enough as the databases do not necessarily contain the name of the state in the records. The authors therefore developed a search strategy in which they gave the names of all the cities and towns where there is an institution that was expected to carry out agricultural research and of course these places also covers the contributions, which are contributed by the persons, not residing in Himachal. Names of such cities and towns were collected from sources such as the Brief facts about Himachal Pradesh (2003), Statistical outline of Himachal Pradesh (2003), etc. Some publications from other Indian states and countries like Madhya Pradesh, USA, Japan, UK, etc. showed up in the data, the names of cities and towns which are common in Himachal as well as in other states and countries as well. For example, Bilaspur is in Himachal and in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh as well, similarly Una, Chail, etc. are also present in the other countries as well. The names of some of the crops are also present as the names of places in some of the countries. Also, names of some of the institutions have several variants. For example, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur is also referred to as HPKV or CSK HPKV or CSK H.P. Agricultural University, etc. The names of such places, institutions and crops were standardized and data cleaned up. All the keywords were combined with the operator OR and were searched from the databases of the study period, i.e. 3

Himachal or Palampur or Solan or Shimla. The search process ended in identifying the data which was downloaded and saved as separate files. The downloaded data in the ASCII format was converted into ISO files, using FANGORN, software. The ISO files were imported into CDS/ISIS for Windows (WINISIS) (Release 1.4, January 2001) software, to create a working database for records on Himachal. The records imported to WINISIS were checked to delete the duplicate records and to find out the unique records. The sequence followed for bringing in the unique records to working database is; CAB Abstracts records, followed by AGRIS, AGRICOLA and FSTA database records. This process resulted in creating the working database for this quantitative study, consisting of relevant 2,451 records on Himachal Pradesh. The codes of the CAB Abstracts database were considered prime and the related codes as given by the AGRICOLA, AGRIS and FSTA database were replaced with the codes of CAB Abstracts in the main database in WINISIS, using the global replace/add option and by manual editing, with the help of subject experts. For the analyses, apart from WINISIS, MS-Excel and MS-Word softwares were also used. Impact factor of journals was added by collecting it from the Journal Citation Report-2002 (JCR) ( and the country of publication of the journals from Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory-1999 and from the Internet. 4. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY The study is confined to the literature contributed by Himachal Pradesh scientists and on Himachal Pradesh by outside experts and agencies and included in the AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB and FSTA CD-ROM databases of the year The year corresponds to the year of publication of the CD-ROMs and not necessarily the year of publication of the records. 4

5. ANALYSIS 5.1 QUANTUM OF PRODUCTION The world literature to the subject was searched from the databases for the year , to retrieve the number of relevant publications. Total contribution from the globe was noted to find out the Indian contribution therein to reach the subject problem of this study, that is, contribution on Himachal Pradesh to world and India as well. This is illustrated in Table 1. Table 1 depicts world output of literature, which is 18,92,906 number of records for the year , India s contribution is 87,075 records which is 4.60%, contribution on Himachal is 2,451 records which is 0.13% to the world output and 2.81% to the total Indian output. The year 1991 received the maximum number of records, i.e. 517 records and the year 1992 has the minimum number of records, i.e., 460 records on Himachal. 5.2 FORM-WISE DISTRIBUTION The data retrieved was mainly in the form of journal articles, symposia proceedings and books. Table 2 presents the varied forms in which literature on Himachal is included in the databases. Table 2 depicts that the periodical publications are the most dominant form in which scientific information is communicated in the subject. It is obvious from the fact that 2,244 records (91.55%) appeared in the form of journal articles. Apart from journal articles, symposia proceedings have 76 records (3.1%) and books have 70 records (2.86%). 5.3 AUTHORSHIP PATTERN The contributors to the subject were analyzed, on the basis of their name(s), appeared as author or editor of the publications. Corporate Bodies (CA) contributions are also indicated in Table 3. Number of authors and their percentage, number of records and their percentage, number of records per author(s) and author(s) per record is illustrated in Table 5. 5

Table 3 depicts the authorship pattern and it has been found that out of 2,451 records of the study period, the maximum number of publications (1,062 records, 43.33%) has 2 authors, followed by 3 authors (677 records, 27.62%). However the single author contribution has only 358 records (14.61%). These three, account for a total of 2,097 records which is 85.56% of the total contribution. The number of publications by the corporate bodies is only 18, i.e. 0.73%. Table 5 shows that the total numbers of authors were 3,077 in 2,451 records for the study period. The year 1994 accounted for maximum number of authors, i.e. 663 authors from 516 records and the year 1990 has the minimum number of authors, i.e. 548 authors from 472 records. The year 1990 has the average of 0.86 numbers of records per author which is the maximum and the year 1991, 1992 and 1994 has the average of 0.78 records per author, which is the minimum. The overall average for the number of records per author is The table also shows that the year 1991, 1992 and 1994 has the average maximum number of authors per record, i.e and the year 1990 has the average minimum number of authors per record, i.e The overall average number of authors per record is Ranking of Authors There are certain eminent personalities in every subject field who achieve recognition through their research output. These personalities form the backbone in their own subject field. The main objective of this analysis was to find out authors, contributed significantly to the subject. The top 20 authors for are given in Table-6. Analysis of Table 6 reveals that the top most prolific author for the study period is S.K. Sharma of the CSKHPKV, Palampur. The affiliation of top ranked authors further indicate that, out of the total 20 top ranked authors, 14 are from CSKHPKV, Palampur, 4 from YSPUHF, Solan and 2 from IVRI, Regional Station, Palampur. 6

5.4 INSTITUTIONS It is known fact that certain institutions contribute for more literary output in a particular subject. This information is very useful for the research scholars as they tend to know the institutions that are leaders in the field. It can be observed in Table 7 that these prime institutions have been contributing through out the study period and can be identified as highly productive institutions. Table 7 shows the top 20 contributing prime institutions. These institutions can be broadly grouped as academic and R&D institutions. Out of these top 20 institutions, 7 institutions at Sr. No. 1,2,4,5,11,12 and 20 are more as academic institutions and remaining are more as R&D institutions. CSKHPKV, Palampur has contributed maximum and from amongst the R&D institutions, Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla, ranked number 1. These prime institutions contributed a total of 2,260 records (92.21%). The other category of institutions like medical colleges, government departments, hospitals, individuals, etc. seemed to be very less productive with only 191 records (7.79%). 5.5 RANKING OF PERIODICALS Periodicals play a vital role in scientific communication as well as for dissemination of information because these are the primary sources of nascent information. Periodicals, that contribute most of the literature in every subject field, are called the core periodicals. Table 8 depicts for the year ; number of total journal titles, number of articles appeared therein, average number of articles per journal and average number of journals per article. Table 8 depicts that the total number of journal titles were 751. The year 1991 has the maximum number of journal titles, i.e. 172 titles (22.90%) and the year 1994 has the minimum number of titles, i.e. 134 (17.84%). It shows that a total number of 2,244 articles are scattered in 751 journals and the overall average number of articles per journal is The overall average 7

number of journal per article is The fluctuation in the number of articles resulted in the fluctuation in number of journals, publishing them. Top ranked 20 prime journal titles ( ) as given in Table 9 shows that Himachal Journal of Agricultural Research, published by the CSKHPKV, Palampur is ranked number 1 with 130 records (5.79%) from total 2,244 records of journal articles, followed by Plant Disease Research (89 records and 3.97%) and Indian Forester (78 records and 3.48%). The journal articles constitute 91.55% of the total records. It is interesting to note here that, all the top ranked journals above are published from India, means output on Himachal is mostly appearing in the journals, published from India. The other forms of the literature reported, viz. symposia proceedings, books, book chapters, annual reports and others, constitute 8.45% (207 records). 5.6 SUBJECT DISPERSION Though, most of the literature on a given subject is published in core journals of the subject but sometimes, some material of research value is also published in the journals belonging to related subject fields as well. It is therefore important to know the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Subject dispersion is assessed on the basis of subject field of publications, the information about which was obtained from the databases. It is important to note that the databases taken for study were four, i.e. AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB Abstracts and FSTA and every database has its own different codes for different subject categories and they have their own interpretation while assigning the subjects. Since the CAB Abstracts is the most comprehensive database among these databases, therefore it was decided that the CAB Abstracts codes is to form the basis for subject-wise study. The subject codes of all the databases were equalized for standardization and were replaced by the codes of the CAB Abstracts with the help of the subject experts. Top 20 subject codes of research publications are presented year-wise in Table 10. It is observed that the total number of code appearances is 6,276 which belong to 214 different 8

subject areas. The codes have been ranked from 1 to 20 on the basis of frequency of their occurrence. The analysis shows that the overall top ranked code is FF600 (pests, pathogens and biogenic diseases of plants) with 664 appearances (10.58%), followed by the code, FF100 (plant production) with 429 appearances (6.84%) and FF020 (plant breeding and genetics) with 397 appearances (6.33%). The percentage of frequency of occurrence of the individual subject codes other than those ranked up to 20, is less than 1.21%. However, even such a scattered literature published in different subject fields, constitutes a significant amount of literature in total that might be useful for the subject specialists and scholars. The percentage of scattered subject codes which are ranked after 20, constitute a total of 41.24%. 5.7 CITATION STUDY Source field of the databases was analyzed to draw inferences regarding citations and the trend in this direction. Table 11 reveals that out of 2,451 records, the maximum number of citations is that of 4 nos.; 179 records (7.30%), followed by 6 citations; 172 records (7.02%) and 5 citations; 169 records (6.90%) per publication. However, publications with 1 citation have only 53 records (2.16%). The publications having 20 citations or more have 210 records (8.57%). It is notable that publications with nil references are the maximum, i.e., 470 records with 19.18%. It is expressed from this analysis that the reference trend of publications is more towards 4 to 6 citations per publication. 5.8 LENGTH OF PUBLICATIONS The length of a document definitely has impact on the information contained therein, therefore, the source field of the databases was analysed for the purpose. Table 12 shows the length-wise number of publications and their percentage during Publications with 3 Page length are the maximum in number (461 records, 18.81%), followed by 424 records (17.30%) of 4 page length. However, publications with 1 Page length are also reported, i.e., 86 records (3.51%). The publications with 21 and more pages have 153 9

records (6.24%). It is expressed from this analysis that the page length trend of publications is more towards 2 to 6 pages which constitute a total of 1,783 publications (72.75%). 5.9 LANGUAGES OF PUBLICATIONS Languages play a significant role in the exchange of scientific information. Information about the languages is useful for the library managers in the acquisition of periodicals and provision of translation services to the users. Table 13 depicts the overall languages in which literature on Himachal was reported. It is observed that, out of 2,451 records, the publications were reported in 4 different languages and English is the only dominant language of the publications with 99.71% productivity. French, German and Spanish also carry some literature to the subject LANGUAGES OF SUMMARIES Data regarding the languages of summaries have been analyzed to find out the language(s) in which summaries are given in addition to the original versions of the publications. Table 14 illustrates that, out of 2,451 records, the summaries were published in 10 different languages. Hindi is the most dominant language for summaries and ranked 1, with 64.10%. German, French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, English, Slovakian and Russian also carry some literature to the subject. There were 195 number of records for which the summary is given, i.e., 7.96% of the total records. The analysis of the language tables 13 and 14 shows that the Hindi is the primary language for summaries where as the English is the dominant language for the publications, as far as the inclusion on Himachal in the databases is concerned COUNTRY-WISE PRODUCTIVITY The contribution to the subject by the persons and institutes, outside the country was identified and tabulated. This resulted in identification of those countries, contributed to the 10

subject. Table 15 reveals that apart from India s contribution, i.e. 2,410 records (98.33%), the other countries have also contributed on Himachal. The contribution from Nepal is 12 records (0.49%), United States with 10 records (0.41%) and United Kingdom with 7 records (0.29%), ranked first, second and third, respectively. The rest of the countries mentioned in the table, find less inclusion. It is gratifying to see the wide range of countries, represented, as the literature have been contributed from 14 countries including India though in less number, as the study was limited to the literature on Himachal only. Information and communication technologies have made it easier for authors to communicate with each other, with journal editors and publishers, especially through the use of Internet/ / conferencing, etc., no matter where they are located, and e-journals in particular have benefited from these developments STATE-WISE PRODUCTIVITY The contribution of literature to the subject by the persons and institutions, from other states of the country, was identified and tabulated. This resulted in identification of those states, contributed to the subject. Table 16 reveals that apart from contribution from Himachal Pradesh, i.e. 2,092 records (85.35%) of the total 2,451 records, the other states have also contributed to the subject. Delhi ranked number 1, after Himachal, with 96 records (3.92%), Uttar Pradesh with 77 records (3.14%) and Uttaranchal with 44 records (1.80%), ranked number 2 and 3, respectively. The contribution of other states mentioned in the table, find less inclusion. It is again gratifying to see the wide range of Indian states, represented, as the literature have been contributed by 22 Indian states including Himachal Pradesh though in less number, as the study was limited to the literature on Himachal only CLASSIFICATION BY JOURNAL IMPACT FACTORS The journal publications are analysed in Table 17, 18 for the distribution by publication 11

country of the journals and distribution by journal impact factor on the basis of Journal Citation Report (JCR-2002) Distribution by Publication Country of the Journals Table 17 depicts the number of journals included as per their country of publication for the subject. It shows that the 360 unique journals have contributions from the journals, published from 24 countries, including India (though the total journal titles of the study period were 751 including same titles of the years of the study period). The maximum number of journals were from India (196), followed by United Kingdom (42) and the United States (28). It also show that a total of 99 journals of the study period have some impact factor, which show the quality of publications to the subject. The publications with impact factor were appeared maximum in the journals, published from the United States (23) and United Kingdom (22) followed by The Netherlands (15). The papers, which were published in Indian journals with impact factor were 13, means India stand 4 th as far as the country-wise impact factor study is concerned Distribution by Journal Impact Factor Table 18 classifies the journals, published literature to the subject on the basis of different ranges of impact factors as seen from JCR A very large number of papers appeared in either nil impact factor journals or very low impact journals. About 73.48% (1,649 records) of papers appeared in journals whose impact factor is zero (meaning these journals are not included in SCI). A total of 417 papers were published in 37 journals whose impact factor is in between > and 92 papers in 30 journals with an impact factor in between > It is satisfactory to see that a total of 595 papers were published in journals with impact factor and the number of such journals with some impact factor is 99. Only one paper was published in Nature and its impact factor is which is the highest for this study. This overall show that 12

the research output on Himachal has qualitative value as well as the sufficient number of publications appeared in journals with impact factor. However, one has to be very cautious in interpreting the data, based on impact factor of journals. Publication of a paper in a high impact factor journal does not necessarily mean the same impact factor for the paper also. Ideally, one should count the number of times a paper is cited and see in which journals these citations occur, rather than merely look at the impact factor of the journal in which a paper is published. It is seen that in certain cases, Indian papers often bring down the impact factor of journals. As also the impact factor of agricultural journals is low, one does not find many highly cited papers coming out of agricultural universities. Also, results of agricultural research are best published in local/national journals as much of the research in agriculture is mainly of local relevance. 6. MAJOR FINDINGS The major findings of the study have been summarized as follow: (i) Literary output in agriculture and allied sciences for world, India and Himachal is fluctuating during the study period. (ii) Contribution to agriculture and allied sciences literature on Himachal as covered by the AGRICOLA, AGRIS, CAB Abstracts and FSTA CD-ROM databases for the year numbered 2,451 records. (iii) Contribution on Himachal to the world is 0.13% and to the India, it is 2.81%. (iv) Majority of the publications are published as journal articles with 91.55% of the total records. (v) Double authorship and multiple authorship are found to be the trend of the study. 13

(vi) An average number of 615 authors contributed 490 publications to the field every year. On an average, the overall number of records per author is less than one (i.e., 0.80%). (vii) Author productivity analysis reveals that the most productive author of the study period is S.K. Sharma from CSK HPKV, Palampur. (viii) Highest number of records is from CSK HPKV, Palampur, followed by YSPUHF, Solan. The contribution from institutions and individuals from other states of the country is less. It is found that amongst the R&D institutions, the Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla contributed the maximum. (ix) It is inferred from the analysis of the literature on Himachal that majority of records on Himachal were produced especially by the persons and institutions located in Himachal itself. (x) The private sector and individual representation is very less compared to the output, supported by the government-aided agencies. (xi) A total of 140 institutions (including personal addresses) were involved for contribution to the agriculture and allied sciences on Himachal. (xii) The Himachal Journal of Agricultural Research, published by the CSKHPKV, Palampur has attained the rank of most productive journal for the subject. Contributions on Himachal appeared in 751 journals emanating from 24 countries. The highest percentage (54.44%) of the publications was in the journals from India. (xiii) The top three subject codes for in the discipline are identified as: pests, pathogens and biogenic diseases of plants (FF600), plant production (FF100) and plant breeding and genetics (FF020). (xiv) Maximum numbers of citations are in between 4-6 citations per publication. 14

(xv) The trend of page length of the publications is more towards 2 to 6 pages which constitute a total of 1,783 publications (72.75%) of the total 2,451 records. (xvi) Majority of the articles were published in English language followed by French, German and Spanish. (xvii) The order of languages of summaries published in addition to the original versions of the publications is Hindi followed by German and French. (xviii) The maximum number of journal titles is from India, followed by United Kingdom and the United States. (xix) There are also a considerable number of publications in the reputed international periodicals with good impact factor. Journal Citation Report-2002 provided impact factor for 99 journals of the study and among them only 13 Indian journals are covered. (xx) The dependence of Indian agricultural scientists on foreign journals is too high as 45.56% journal articles, appeared in foreign journals. (xxi) From the foreign category contribution, Nepal tops the list for publications on Himachal, followed by United States and United Kingdom. (xxii) Contributions from Delhi on Himachal ranked first from amongst the Indian states, outside the Himachal Pradesh. 15
