Sustainable wood & bio-based materials in construction February 2018: FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy Andrea Stocchero 20 February 2018
Prosperity from trees Mai i te ngahere oranga Scion s purpose is to drive innovation and growth from New Zealand s forestry, wood products and bio-based materials
Wood based Design & Construction Sector The use of sustainably grown wood and wood products in construction can contribute to a sustainable future

Natural and renewable building material Wood, is a renewable material provided by nature and crafted by people Wood can be planted, grown, harvested and replanted, instead of being extracted from quarries, river beds or mines. Adapted from: WFPA Forest&Fish Andrea Stocchero, Nov 2017 Feb 2018

Carbon mitigation Trees sequester carbon from the atmosphere while growing. Using sustainable wood extend the carbon storage from the forest to the building, while replanted trees will continue the carbon sequestration process. Wood products and buildings require less energy to be produced compared to other materials. Andrea Stocchero, Nov 2017 Feb 2018
Carbon mitigation Sequestration optimisation + Storage maximisation + Emission minimisation Urban Equilibrium David Turner, Sequal Lumber, 2014
Performing building material Most of today s building components can be made from sustainable wood Engineered wood products are designed to improve solid wood s natural performances Properly designed, built and maintained wooden buildings are durable as it is proven by centuries old wooden buildings worldwide Andrea Stocchero, Nov 2017 Feb 2018
Performing building material Light-weight and strong Thermal performance Resilient and durable Healthy and pleasant to live in Workable Variety of products Structural Int/Ext finishing Panelling Insulation Andrea Stocchero, Nov 2017 Studio Moreno Maggi
Sustainable wood buildings Resilient and future-ready Healthy and safe to live in Aesthetically appealing Provide life time affordability Minimize the impact on the natural environment Improving people s quality of life and wellbeing Andrea Stocchero, Nov 2017 Feb 2018
