CONFECTION SUNFLOWER Planting Guide 1
Critical Steps to Planting Success Confection sunflower seed is typically larger, longer and lighter in test weight with a much thicker hull than oilseed sunflower. These characteristics need to be considered when planting to ensure an evenly spaced, uniform emerging confection sunflower stand and maximum yields. These are the critical steps to confection sunflower planting success: 1) PLANTER MAINTENANCE Replace any broken or worn out parts annually. Focus on the in-furrow opening disc and seed tube wear that affect depth control. Check to be sure the seed metering device and seed tubes are capable of planting the larger confection planting seed. Use seed flow products, such as graphite or talcum powder, to mix with seed to improve seed flow. Recommendations vary by planter type, so refer to the operator s manual for the appropriate seed flow product. 2 Critical Steps to Planting Success 2) SEEDING RATE Nuseed recommends specific seeding rates for each Nuseed product. Recommended seeding rates are based on commercial grain characteristics desired by specific end use markets. Actual seeding rates may need to be adjusted according to soil type and available moisture. For example, in geographies where available moisture is limited the seeding rate should be reduced by as much as 20% to produce desirable commercial grain. For recommended seeding rates see page 10 and 11 or visit nuseed.com 3
Planters Critical Steps to Planting Success 3) SEEDING DEPTH Confection sunflower seed generally requires more available moisture to germinate and emerge than oilseed sunflower due to the larger, thicker shell. Nuseed recommends planting into adequate moisture. Confection sunflower should NEVER be planted deeper than 5 cm or 2 inches. 4) PLANTING SPEED Slow down! The large size and light test weight make confection sunflower more challenging to plant. Slowing the planter down allows the seed metering device to work properly and more accurately. Each planter is different but a good general starting speed is 8 km/h or 5 mph. For many years confection sunflower has been a challenge to plant with certain planters. As the industry moves to the next generation of even longer and larger seed, planting has become even more challenging. One important fact to remember is that all of the planters we are using are manufactured to plant crops other than sunflower. The following recommendations have been compiled from planter test stands, dealer and grower experiences, manufacturer modifications and theory. MANUFACTURERS INCLUDED: - John Deere - Precision eset - Kinze - White - Case/IH 5) SEED PLACEMENT Singulation (having one seed per location) is very important. Having multiple seeds in a location will create competition between plants resulting in smaller commercial grain. 4 5
Planters Planters John Deere - Vacuum Recommended Disc Large Sweet Corn #A52391 Other Disc Small Sweet Corn #A52390 Vacuum Setting 6-9 water pressure Double Eliminator ½ to ¾ up #AA61046 Knock Out Assyz #A37348 (will not work if holes are plugged with silicone) Problem: Can t set planting rate low enough for targeted rate. Solution: Plug every other hole with silicone, then set planter at 2X desired rate in manual to compensate for the plugged holes. Plugging every other hole with silicone also eliminates some of the doubles. Optimum speed 4.5 to 5 mph. Without holes plugged increase speed by.5 mph on lower popluations. Problem: Monitor reading sporadically, or low population alarm is sounding. Solution: Mix talc slightly above manufacturer recommendation by ½ cup per bushel. If seed is treated with cruiser or other insecticide, double the manufacturer recommendation to 1-2 cups per bushel. Clean eye at the seed tube. Premix seed with talc prior to dumping seed into planter. John Deere - Center Fill (CS) Use same recommendations as Vacuum planter, including talc recommendations, plus the following: Problem: Seed is plugged in hopper seed delivery hose end. Solution: Reduce tank pressure set at lighter density seed setting. Use hose end - Part # A81580 (See Illustration 1 on page 12). Cut hose end at 45 degrees, with deepest cut starting at the fill side of the hose end. (See Illustration 2 on page 12). Increase talc for improved flowability. John Deere - Vacuum Precision Set Recommended Disc Vacuum Setting Large Sweet Corn 6-9 water pressure Problem: Monitor reading sporadically, or low population alarm is sounding. Solution: Increase speed at lower populations. E-flow (talc/graphite mix) to increase flowability. Problem: Seed is plugging in seed tubes. Solution: Use large curved seed tube - Part # A #
Planters Planters Kinze/John Deere - Finger White - Air Delivery Large Corn Disc Medium Corn Disc #2 Set down 1/4 turn, so only 2 of the 4 brushes touch Use large fingers. If planter setting can not be set low enough, some growers find worn out fingers and cut every other finger off ½ to 1 at the pick up end and then set planter at 2X the desired rate of planting to compensate for the missing finger pickups. Recommended Disc Problem: New planter or updated units are under planting or sporadic planting. Mix talc at 1/2 to 1 cup per bushel. Use 1 to 2 cups per bushel with seed treated with Cruiser. Solution: New teardrop style metering cradle (aka backing plate) (See Illustration 3 on page 13) will not plant seed consistent, as they will kick out the seed because opening is too small. Use John Deere Part # AA35644 or Kinze Part # GR0664 (will work on John Deere also). These 2 part numbers are more of a rectangular shape than John Deere s tear drop style vacuum plate (See Illustration 4 on page 13) and will plant 80-90%. Future changes to cradle to improve accuracy are being explored by manufacturers. Problem: Seed tube plugging. Solution: Use large curved seed tube - Part # A Mix graphite with seed at 2 times the recommended rate. Air Setting Tickler Brush Case/IH Vacuum Recommended Disc Large Corn Disc Vacuum Baffle Setting 2 Singular Level (w/oldstyle lever).75.3 Singular Level (w/oldstyle dial) #275116A Mix graphite (Seed Flow Lubricant) at 1/8 to 1/4 cup per bushel. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup if seed is Cruiser treated. Case/IH - Cyclo Air Cyclo not recommended Case/IH - Air Seeders/Drills Follow mfg. recommendations; varies by brand. 8 # #
