1 ARBORJET FOR MUNICIPALITIES MANAGING EMERALD ASH BORER A Worldwide Leader in Urban Forest Preser vation
2 Chicago, IL One 15" diameter ash tree provides benefits of $144/yr. Don't let EAB damage your assets. What is Emerald Ash Borer? Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive tree pest imported from Asia, and the first U.S. finding was in 2002 in Detroit, MI. Since then, 15 states have reported findings, quarantines have been imposed, and cities like yours are challenged to decide on a management strategy. What Is The Cost? If left unmanaged, Emerald Ash Borer has the potential to kill ash tree populations and cost millions of tax dollars to remove threatened or dead trees. The USDA and city arborists estimate the average tree removal costs between $750 - $1200 per tree. EAB could cost millions to small cities with just a few thousand ash trees. TREE-äge Insecticide can drastically reduce the loss of trees at a fraction of the cost of removal and replacement. One 15 Diameter Ash Tree Provides Benefits of $144/yr Additionally: 17 diameter white ash can provide benefits of $217/year. The National Tree Benefit Calculator shows that trees pay us back in annual savings for things like storm water runoff, property value, and energy. EAB Photo By Dave Cappaert, Example Graph: 15 ash tree in Midwest Property Value $42.34 Electricity $17.87 Natural Gas $28.90 Storm Water $38.19 CO 2 $5.71 Air Quality $11.32
3 If left untreated, we could lose over 8 billion ash trees over the course of the next decade. We could lose over 8 billion ash trees over the course of the next decade. Four Possible Municipal Strategies 1) Do Nothing Over time ash tree populations may be significantly reduced, and ash trees may disappear from the urban, suburban and forest landscape. This poses serious financial and environmental impact. 2) Preemptive Removal of Ash Trees Remove healthy ash trees from neighborhoods before pest arrives. This is very costly up front, and would require a constant process of racing to remove trees before EAB kills. Residents have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with this approach. 3) Treat with Something There are several options to choose from, but some treatments provide similar results as the Do Nothing strategy. 4) Treat with TREE-äge Insecticide Save on expensive removal costs, retain value of ash trees. TREE-äge provides up to 2 years of protection, as shown by several university studies 1. Application is sealed in the tree. Residents will be satisfied with the decision to save trees in a socially responsible way. 4 Arborjet is committed to preserving the beauty and integrity of our urban forests. Success Stories Chicago, IL The city of Chicago has over 83,000 ash trees to manage. City officials have chosen TREE-äge Insecticide to protect ash trees and save money. S U C C E S S S TO R I E S Milwaukee, WI The city of Milwaukee has over 36,000 ash trees, and forestry officials use the Arborjet VIPER Hydraulic Device with TREE-äge as a proactive treatment to protect ash trees. Untreated Trees Arborjet is committed to preserving the beauty and integrity of our urban forests. Before Tree Removal New Brighton, MN The city of New Brighton, MN treated their nearly 800 boulevard ash trees in 5 weeks using 2 crews. They are now a strong voice to surrounding communities that treatment is manageable within a city. Cottage Grove, MN The city of Cottage Grove, MN treated nearly 2,500 trees in This saves them millions of dollars in removal and replacement costs. Treated Trees with Arborjet s TREE-äge Richfield, MN The city of Richfield treats its mature city ash trees with TREE-äge and its high value oaks for borers with other Arborjet products. 5 Arborjet provides the world leading tree injection products. TREE I.V. Micro Infusion VIPER Hydraulic Device Arborjet provides the world leading tree injection products. Arborjet Equipment & Formulations What is Arborjet? Arborjet provides municipalities with world leading tree injection equipment and formulations to protect trees in the most effective and socially responsible way. The process is simple, just drill, plug, and inject trees and the product is safely sealed inside the tree. Nothing in the air, soil, or water. Versatile Equipment VIPER Hydraulic Device: For high production, perfect for city jobs with a lot of trees. It is powered by compressed air, enabling workers to quickly move from tree to tree injecting the formulation. This is Micro-injection. This device is particularly helpful in situations of less than ideal uptake conditions. TREE I.V.: The TREE I.V. is a versatile tool that injects multiple sites simultaneously and easily injects all tree types and sizes. The Tree I.V. allows the worker to setup injections on multiple trees, and it works well for injection with high volumes of formulation. This is Arborjet Micro Infusion. Arborjet Formulations - Labeled for 2 year control of Emerald Ash Borer. It has been proven in several independent studies to provide the highest levels of efficacy against Emerald Ash Borer. The active ingredient in TREE-äge is Emamectin benzoate. IMA-jet: Imidacloprid - Effective against Emerald Ash Borer and a broad range of other pests. A R B O R J E T E QU I P M E N T & F O R M U L AT I O N S ACE-jet: Acephate Quick knock down of insect pests, including lepidoptera. PHOSPHO-jet: Phosphorous Effective fungicide for a broad range of diseases. MIN-jet Iron: Iron, Manganese, & more Micronutrients to quickly alleviate deficiencies. 6 We have the equipment and support you need to start treating trees immediately. Common Questions If you are faced with the challenge of managing Emerald Ash Borer, here are four common questions municipalities have regarding treatment. Understanding the benefits of Arborjet and the unique chemistry of TREE-äge Insecticide is a game changer in the battle against EAB. Treatment Frequency: Are EAB treatments required yearly? No. Arborjet s TREE-äge is labeled to provide two years of protection against EAB from a single application. Effectiveness: Uncertain if treatment works? TREE-äge works. Five Midwest universities show TREE-äge as the most effective treatment to manage Emerald Ash Borer. There is fear that treatment just delays decline similar to the fate of elm trees to Dutch Elm Disease. Emerald Ash Borer is not like Dutch Elm Disease (DED). EAB is a deadly insect, but TREE-äge has proven results and provides two years of control from a single application. Treatment of ash trees with TREE-äge is successfully being used by many cities across the U.S. Cost: Apprehensive about short and long term treatment costs? Today, cities protect ash trees at 5-10% of the cost of removal. TREE-äge treatments every 2 years can control Emerald Ash Borer for years before reaching the cost of removing them. Also, cities that have removed ash trees are finding increased costs in storm water run-off, energy use, decreases in property value, and a dramatic change to neighborhoods. Environmental Impact: What is the impact of using TREE-äge Insecticide? TREE-äge is sealed inside the tree: Nothing in the air, nothing in the soil. Arborjet injects a very small amount of active ingredient in the most effective and socially responsible way possible. TREE-äge provides two years of protection from a single treatment. Looked at differently; what will the environmental impact be if cities don t use TREE-äge? Compared to Cut and Replace," the Arborjet Method can be far less than 10% of the cost!
