1 Carolyn R. Breece 743 NW 18 th St., Corvallis, OR (541) EDUCATION Master of Science, Forestry (2006). Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ Thesis title: Effects of prescribed fire on bark beetle activity and tree mortality in Southwestern ponderosa pine forests Bachelor of Science (1999). University of Oregon, Eugene, OR Major Biology, departmental honors Minor Environmental Studies HONORS AND AWARDS Agricultural Research Foundation Faculty Research Assistant Award, Graduate honors/awards: Member, Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Honors Society, Robert A. Blaser Forestry Scholarship, Undergraduate honors/awards: Graduated with honors in biology, Dean's List, Recipient of a Research Training Grant, RESEARCH/ EXTENSION EXPERIENCE Oregon State University, Department of Horticulture, Corvallis, OR Faculty Research Assistant (March 2009 to present). Supervisor: Dr. Ramesh Sagili. Primary responsibilities are to: 1) assist Dr. Sagili in the conduct of research on honey bee health and nutrition including playing a major role in the management of the OSU apiary and a variety of field research projects. 2) serve as Coordinator for the Oregon Master Beekeeper [OMB] Program by: organizing and facilitating bi-monthly Program Development committee meetings; processing applications, managing payments, matching students with mentors; managing a field force of over 60 volunteer mentors who teach OMB participants the basics of beekeeping - in its first 3 years, the OMB program has enrolled 450 Apprentice Level (beginning) students and 60 Journey Level (advanced) students; assisting in the quarterly reporting process of our ODA Specialty Crop Block Grants received over the past 3 years (funds received = $135,000). Pacific Northwest Research Station, US Forest Service, Corvallis, OR. Forestry Technician (April 2008-March 2009). Primary responsibilities were to: assist with research projects involving forest and rangeland entomology. Projects included a study on post-fire tree mortality, where I surveyed trees for bark beetle activity and mortality; and used insects as bio-control on the invasive weed, leafy spurge. Summer work was entirely in the field and winter work included data entry and analysis, modeling post-fire tree mortality, assisting with posters and reports, and organizing for past and future field seasons.
2 SEASONAL FIELD EXPERIENCE Klamath Bird Observatory, Ashland, OR. Contract bird surveyor (April 2007-November 2007). Surveyed forest birds for long-term monitoring projects. Duties included point count surveys, territory mapping, vegetation surveys, and data entry. Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ. Graduate Research Assistant (August 2004-December 2006). Field work related to my graduate thesis included establishing plots in ponderosa pine forest, taking standard tree measurements (dbh, height, crown ratio, etc.), surveying trees for fire damage (crown scorch, bole char, etc.), bark beetle surveys, and point-count bird surveys. I analyzed results using JMP and SPSS, modeled post-fire tree mortality, and wrote a thesis, which is published in Forest Ecology and Management (see below for reference). Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. Field Technician (April 2004-July 2004). Assisted in a study determining the effects of post-fire salvage logging on bird communities at Timbered Rock. Duties included setting up point-count stations, performing point-count surveys for diversity and abundance, and data entry. Auburn University, Andalusia, AL. Research Technician (March 2003-June 2003). Studied of avian response to fire and fire surrogate techniques on longleaf pine forests. Duties included nest searching and monitoring, territory mapping, and vegetation surveys. University of Washington, Lacey, WA. Field Assistant (Apr Aug. 2002). Assisted with the study of avian response to forest thinning. Duties included point-count surveys for diversity and abundance, territory mapping, nest searching and monitoring, vegetation surveys, data entry and management. University of Montana, Missoula, MT. Field Assistant (Aug Oct. 2001). Performed vegetation surveys for a study of the rate of post-fire regeneration of vegetation. Duties included vegetation surveys, data entry. University of Idaho, Soda Springs, ID. Field Assistant (May 2001-July 2001). Assisted with research project studying the effects of selenium on reproductive cycles of wetland birds. Searched for and monitored nests, abundance surveys, egg collection, and egg/chick weighing. U.S. Forest Service, Northern California. Research Assistant (Aug April 2001). Studied insect species composition in a forest that has undergone various forestry treatments. Duties included vegetation surveys, insect sorting, data collection and data entry. Wildlife Conservation Society/Humboldt State University, Hat Creek, CA. Field Assistant (May 2000-Aug. 2000). Assisted with the study of avian response to different forestry treatments in order to re-create a late successional pine forest. Duties included spot mapping, point-counts, nest searching and monitoring, vegetation surveys, data entry. University of Oregon, Eugene, OR. Research Assistant (Jan Aug. 1999). Studied the evolutionary genetics of the pitcher-plant mosquito, data collection and analysis, and writing honors thesis.
