Principle barriers: From Piecemeal to Regional - implementing Wood Heating in the SW - March 2006 Higher capital costs Lack of confidence No heat revenue support for CO 2 value of renewable heat No independent advice Lack of industry capacity to follow up enquiries 6
Co-ordinated Woodfuel Initiative Aim: To boost the number of biomass boilers installed in and around 10 designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in the South West Contracted to Centre for Sustainable Energy on behalf of Woodland Renaissance, SW Protected Landscapes Forum and Forestry Commission Regional Programme - private, public and voluntary organisations: Screening and advice service - freephone Independent and impartial advisory network Post-advice support and some grant handholding Proactive identification of community projects - Capital grants available in Designated areas Rural focussed events Focussing on installations <150kW scale 18 installations = 1.9MW 7
The SW Bioheat Programme Funded by SWRDA and FC and contracted to RegenSW Initially a 2 year programme Vision: To assist the South West biomass sector to grow to a profitable, self-sustaining size Aim: To tackle local barriers, identify opportunities and build on strengths of the South West Demand creation Fuel supply Training Woodfuel post 8
SW Bioheat: Demand Creation Target: To increase the number of systems in the pipeline in the SW by 32MW Contract awarded to Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) and Black and Veatch: Selected projects individually championed and supported Site identification (30 sites) Pre-feasibility Grant applications Planning liaison Fuel supplier link-up Site Assessment training Demonstration visits Stakeholder presentations 9

SW Bioheat Succession EU IEE FOREST Project (RegenSW/SWEA/Exeter Uni) Working towards a more profitable and successful supply chain Partners: Sweden, Austria, Poland, Spain, Ireland, Italy and the UK. Support activities include: Website Best practice guides and tools Exchange visits and trade fairs (including SWWS - Sept 2011) Training and brokering services An opportunity to publish case studies and lessons learnt 1
The way ahead Other Initiatives supported: Dartmoor Woodfuel Co-operative Ward Forester (Devon) Westwoods Woodfuels Energy Crop Scheme underspend: EWGS Woodfuel WIG roading and intevention RDPE Axis 1 harvesting, processing, storage, etc. RHI: Working with Carbon Trust, BEC, DECC and the Woodfuel Suppliers Group to mainstream biomass heating Leading to critical mass and a robust and effective supply chain 2
2 Woodfuel s place in the Market
Key issues. Phytophthora ramorum. Increasing Demand: Capital cost Grants vs RHI Appropriate sites Good design, i.e. fuel storage and delivery Need a critical mass Ensuring Fuel Supply: Need for a robust, and secure supply chain Ensuring the best mix of fuel sources Engagement with woodland owners Sell heat not woodchip..building Confidence is still essential! 2
