BIODIVERSITY: USES AND CONSERVATION IN THE AMAZON Gil Vieira Laboratory of Plant Propagation and Digital Media Research experiences of our group (UEA/INPA)
What is biodiversity? Species variation Genetic variation Ecosystem variation Within area or bioma Their interactions with environment and humans
Current Scenario in the Brazilian Amazon This huge area of conservation is a challenge for research and governamental policies
Due to its size, we face different conditions and problems Research projects must have multi-disciplinary approaches, with well multi-institutional participation to join different competencies
What can we do to maitain the biodiversity? 1. Carrying out studies in different places by inventoring and monitoring: flora, fauna, climate, socio-economical issues (local population including traditional and indigeneous people) 2. Developing new technologies to promote sustainable uses of natural resources (timber, NTFP, fauna), 3. Education and transference of technologies for local people 4. Improving the skills for workers in the management of protected areas
What our group has studied in the last years for improving the uses and conservation of the Biodiversity?
Jutaí Silves Silves Itacoatiara Presidente Figueiredo Presidente Figueiredo a) RC-Uatumã- Rural Settlement near UHE- Balbina-AM b) RC-Silves- Rural settlement near Precious Wood Co b) Traditional people RESEX-19 communities
Participatory Researches Developed Community-based forest management: timber and non-timber products -Rural settlement from agrarian reform (INCRA) -Conservation Units (Sustainable Development Reserve and Extrativism Reserve)
Studies in social-economy and oral history of the local people:
Inventories of natural resources To analyze all economical potentialities in the area: Timber, NFTP, Tourism, fishery, etc. PLANNING
Studies to transform the extractable natural resources into final products Sustainable uses of timber
Sustainable uses of non timber forest products Essential oils from seeds, leaves, saps: cosmetic and food industries. Species for medicinal uses: pharmacological industries Andiroba (Carapa guianensis) Lianna Saracura-mirá (Ampelozizyphus amazonicus
SILVICULTURAL STUDIES Plantation in open areas testing different methods Enrichment plantation in forest gaps opened by logging ( shade tolerance) Enrichment plantation in secondary forests
CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSTY IN HIGHLY IMPACTED ECONOMICAL ACTIVITIES Mining, Oil industry, Hidroelectrical Dam Prevention, reduction and restoration of environmental impacts Mineração Rio do Norte Co - Bauxite mining ELETRONORTE Co - Electric power generator PETROBRAS Co Oil industry
CT-PETRO Research Network started in 2004 Several projects have developed researches on impact prevention, soil conservation, monitoring biodiversity and health issues caused by environmental impact Our group has focused in developing new techniques in forest restoration
Researches on forest restoration: Forest genetic Seed technologies Seedlings production Forest succession Mixed plantations Soil science (fertility and erosion) Ecophysiology Bioenginering of soil
Mother trees for seed collection
Using seeds and seedling of good quality respecting ecological adaptation + Source: Ferraz, Source : Melo, Sucesful reforestation programs Source : Melo, Source : Melo, 2007.
Collecting plant material for Botanical identification
Studies of fruit processing and seed extraction Seed extraction Classification Drying process and stored in dry chambers
Foto: L.C. Molinaro Studies on ecological succession being difficulted by soil erosion and weed infestation MORTATOTAL MORTAEROSAO
Researches developed to avoid soil erosion and to induce natural regeneration Erosion blocker and inducer of natural regeneration built with coco nut fiber and caucho resin
