The Role of HEC-GOs in the Energy Transition EUSEW - 22 June 2017, Brussels Simon Minett The European Association for the Promotion of Cogeneration
COGEN Europe National Associations European Association for the Promotion of Cogeneration Established in 1993 Vision: To promote the wider use of cogeneration as part of Europe s sustainable energy strategy Stakeholder representation to the EU Institutions Corporate Members Cooperation with other key industry associations and NGOs
Putting Energy Efficiency First 90% efficiency or more reduces transmission and distribution grid losses saves between 15-40% energy saves 200 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Achieving Global Leadership in Renewable Energy CHP is dispatchable and predictable enabling a higher share of RES in the system and grid stability 20% of fuels used in cogeneration are renewables (doubled in 10 years) 3
Flexible CHP & DHC: Stadtwerke Kiel 290 M project in Kiel, Germany due online end of MW of electricity & 192 MW of heat for the local electrical grid & district heating networks in the city Expected to reduce CO2 emissions from 1.8 million tonnes to approximately 540,000 tonnes CHP units can be ramped up and down in minutes à marketing of balancing energy Integration of electrode boiler (powerto-heat) during periods of low electricity prices à high flexibility Flexible operations designed to offset the volatility of the high level of wind integration 4
CHP Engages Consumers in the Market Empowering Energy Consumers Cogeneration is Vital to Europe s Competitiveness Cogeneration is located close to endusers (cities, homes, businesses or industrial sites), By saving energy, reducing energy bills and lowering CO2 emissions Helps consumers and local communities produce their own low carbon heat and electricity, save energy and reduce energy bills. 100,000 people are directly employed by the Cogeneration sector Millions of employees benefits from the use of Cogeneration in their businesses Around 100,000 Europeans selfgenerate electricity and heat with onsite micro- or small scale cogeneration About 70 million Europeans use district heating, half of its heat is supplied by cogeneration today A majority of refineries, paper mills and chemical manufacturers use cogeneration to produce their own efficient, secure and low-carbon electricity and heat 5
HEC-GOs Ensuring benefits are delivered, understood and verified Gives customers confidence of quality Gives assurance to Governments Passport to benefits (White Certificates in Italy, EEG in Germany, CHPQA Programme in UK) 6
CHP is a key player in the energy system now and in the future Source: GrDF Ø Fuel neutrality Ø Delivering high energy efficiency at the point of use Ø Integrating the heat and electricity markets Ø Currently using natural gas and biofuels Ø In the future ready for synthetic gases and hydrogen Ø Highly cost effective energy solution for industry, public buildings, district heating and residential customers
