10 Rationale - DEMAND Increases in electricity consumption are attributable to the following: Population Growth Industrial Growth Cultural & Technological Change: currently, only 2% of Guineans use electricity, the remaining 98% use firewood and charcoal (only 1 out of 10 Guineans have access to the hydroelectric power grid) The many power outages Guinea currently experiences have resulted in major industrial inefficiency and riots throughout the country

12 HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER Studies show a hydropower potential of roughly 6,000 MW for Guinea; currently, only 2% (9 hydroelectric stations of the available potential is being utilized Guinea s many rivers 4 major sites with a potential of MW: Amaria (665 MW), Souapiti (515 MW), Koukoutamba (281 MW), and Kaleta (240 MW) 116 sites with a potential of MW each

13 CCGT POWER PLANT: LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) & CRUDE OIL Sources of LNG & CRUDE OIL recently discovered in Guinea These recent discoveries could greatly off-set the current reliance of 800,000+ tons of imported petroleum, crude oil, and lubricants LNG Refinery

14 Rationale: PORT OF CONAKRY Initiative to improve infrastructure of Conakry, Guinea s most economically viable city; to facilitate the efficiency of Guinea s expanding importing/exporting industry

15 Rationale: CONAKRY-KANKAN RAILWAY RENOVATION Vale, a Brazilian company, began the Conakry- Kankan railway improvement project in 2010 It is anticipated that the improvement of the railway will bring about major socioeconomic change and produce thousands of jobs, which require additional infrastructural development and an increase electricity usage

16 MAJORITY FUNDING: CMEC CMEC will fund 90% of the construction of the project (including the foundation work, labor, groundwork, and procurement of materials and machinery) if the following is obtained: Feasibilty study Sovereign guarantee Remaining 10% initial funding from investors

17 START-UP FUNDS: INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT US$224 million from World Bank, Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and International Development Association (IDA) with concentrated support in the following projects: community development, rural infrastructure, education, transport, electricity, Health/HIV/AIDS, water basin management, and rural electrification

18 START-UP FUNDS: INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT US$4.5 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to fund a Guinea Electricity Sector Efficiency Improvement, co-financed by an International Development Association (IDA) to improve the commercial and operational efficiency of the electricity sector and reduce carbon dioxide emissions created by energy losses GEF funding will: co-finance distribution, network upgrading, and training, design energy efficiency and demand side management programs, and pilot initiatives (efficient light bulbs, energy audits), and other technical assistance to Electricité de Guinée (EDG)

19 Technology Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Siemens V94.2 heavy-duty gas turbine plant ready for relocation from Asia; gas turbine capacity of 105 MW; The station s auxiliary voltage is 6 kv and it can receive its incoming power either through back-feed from the grid or a separate station transformer depending on the requirement and grid connection. It is of single-shaft, single casing design, equipped with 2 silo-type combustion chambers, a 16-stage compressor and a 4-stage turbine An air-cooled generator, rated at 125 MVA and generating at 10.5 kv is driven from the cold (compressor) end of the GT unit. The unit is currently installed with dual fuel Siemens diffusion-type burners, capable of operation on distillate-oil liquid and natural gas

22 Technology Hydro-Electric (cut to 58 seconds) A pressure tunnel is taken off from the reservoir and water is brought to the valve house at the start of penstock The valve house contains the main sluice valves and automatic isolating valves (controls the water flow to the power house and cuts off the water supply when the penstock bursts) From the valve house, water is taken to water turbine through a huge steel pipe known as penstock The water turbine converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy, and the turbine drives the alternator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
