The Carbon Benefits Project Overview of The CBP Modelling Component and Outcomes Assessing Total System Carbon: A review workshop for the GEF of the tools developed by The Carbon Benefits Project September 2012

The Carbon Benefits Modelling Component

The Carbon Benefits Modelling Component 1 Methodology Development 2 Test cases 3 Training and Capacity Building

1 Methodology Development Baseline Scenario Initial Land Use Carbon / GHG Benefit Project Scenario Project Benefits: - Soil improvement, - Improved livestock breeds, feeding - Reforestation/Afforestation

Features of the CBP Modelling System A system that is Online User friendly Can be used at any stage of a project Can be used for different types of projects with different amounts of data Gives spatially explicit output Gives a report in a standard format

Project Information Module Modelling Component Measurement Protocol Module Toolkit advisor Project Description Module Measurement Module Remote Sensing Ground-based Guidance Module Tools MRV Module REDD & A/R Carbon Benefits Simple Detailed Socioeconomic Tools Dynamic Modelling Reporting Module

Project Information Module Name of project, funding agency etc. Toolkit advisor Project Description Module Where project activities are Guidance Module Advice on measurements to take, which tools to use Tools Simple Detailed Dynamic Modelling Tools Socioeconomic Tools Reporting Module

Project Information Module Measurement Protocol Module Toolkit advisor Project Description Module Measurement Module Remote Sensing Ground-based Guidance Module Tools MRV Module REDD & A/R Carbon Benefits Simple Detailed Socioeconomic Tools Dynamic Modelling Reporting Module

A1 Methodology Development Tools Who are the tools aimed at? -Managers and potential managers of GEF or other land management projects - Others at GEF implementing and executing agencies -Anyone wanting to estimate the GHG impact of land management activities Who could the output be used by? -GEF and other Program Officers wanting reports from multiple projects in a standardized format -Those wanting multiple reports from projects in different focal areas, countries, project types, etc. -Those deciding which projects to fund

A1 Methodology Development Tools Simple Detailed Dynamic Modelling Default data provided, choose from drop-down menus What is needed to use it? -A computer with an internet connection -Information on land management activities and where they occur -An idea of land use/management under a baseline and a project scenario Who is it suitable for? - Suitable for use in projects without many resources for C monitoring & reporting - Also suitable for use by those developing project proposals - Available in English, Chinese & Spanish (French and Portuguese soon)

A1 Methodology Development Tools Simple Detailed Dynamic Modelling Can create own crop/ grass/ forest/ agroforestry types and systems Can use project specific emission factors What is needed to use it? Same as Simple plus: - Specific information on crop/grass/forest species and systems - Optional measurements to improve emission factors - Resources and facilities for field sampling and lab analysis (to varying extents) Who is it suitable for? - Projects wanting to reduce uncertainties in emissions estimations - Suitable for use in projects with more emphasis on C benefits

A1 Methodology Development Tools Simple Detailed Dynamic Modelling Utilises a dynamic model to assess soil and biomass carbon stock changes. What is needed to use it? - Knowledge of GIS - Knowledge of ecosystem models - Data for model parameterisation Who is it suitable for? -For users with a scientific background who wish to model carbon stock changes in projects with a carbon focus.

Project Information Module Name of project, funding agency etc. Toolkit advisor Project Description Module Where project activities are Guidance Module Advice on measurements to take, which tools to use Tools Simple Detailed Dynamic Modelling Tools Socioeconomic Tools The Cost-Benefit Analysis gives the economic impact of project activities on land users and the Reporting initial Module investment and labour The Driver-Impact-Response Analysis identifies the main drivers and barriers for the adoption of land management practices and possible responses to overcome them.

Test Cases - Five land management projects involved in tool development -Consultation workshops for feedback on, features, interface design, crops/grass/trees species, language etc. Projects The GEF KAPSLM Project The GEF Ningxia IEM Agricultural Development Project The GEF Niger/Nigeria IEM Project The GEF Gansu Capacity Building Project The South West Amazonia Project

Test Cases - Work developing project specific stock references and emission factors Reference C Land Use data Emission Factors Uncertainty analysis

Soil GHG emissions from residues and fertilizers: Soybean/Corn and Cotton Soil and litter GHG emissions Fertilizer N 2 O emissions

Cattle: feces and urine emission factor

Test Cases Wolfberry growth and biomass

Test Cases Implementation of the Tools Implementation of the tools: - Simple in all test cases - CBA and DPSIR KAPSLM, Ningxia and Gansu IEM - Simple, Detailed and Dynamic Modelling in South West Amazonia Project Year 2030 SOC stocks 0-20 cm (t C ha -1 )

3. Training and Capacity Building Three training events held so far for networks of GEF projects In two of these test case personnel helped to train participants from other GEF projects In total 58 people trained at face to face workshops Number of Skype online demos with other GEF projects Demonstration at UNCCD side event in Korea
