IES <Virtual Environment> Live e-training Trainee notes BREEAM Navigator Version 6.4 Introduction These training notes are to be used in conjunction with your BREEAM Navigator training. In this training session you will be shown how to use the BREEAM Navigator, IES s sustainable design workflow navigator, available as an option within the IES <Virtual Environment>. Prior to using the BREEAM Navigator, you will need to use ModelIT or the Geometry navigator to create the building geometry from scratch or to edit the geometry. You can also edit geometry which has been imported from SketchUp or Revit (via the IES SketchUp or Revit plugins) or via a gbxml import. Additionally, prior to using the BREEAM Navigator, you will need to use Apache or the Data navigator to create and assign constructions, HVAC system data and thermal templates. This BREEAM Navigator training assumes that you have already been trained in ModelIT and Apache. These notes accompany the e-training lecture and act as a reference point for your further study. The trainer will show you how to perform various functions as shown in the following pages, and images are included to assist you in following the trainer as the session proceeds, and to act as a memory jogger after the session. For more detailed help you can use the Help menu within the specific IES application, and also you can refer to the user guides accessible from the <VE> Help menu. 1
Introduction BREEAM (Building Research Establishment s Environmental Assessment Method) is an environmental assessment method for buildings and is used to describe a building s environmental performance. BREEAM credits for building performance are awarded in a number of different categories and sub-categories (known as issues ). For each issue there is a maximum number of credits available, and this maximum number is different for each issue. BREEAM scheme (eg Offices, Education etc) manuals are available for free download from the BREEAM website: What is included in the BREEAM navigator? The BREEAM navigator currently covers various issues in the following categories: Health and Wellbeing Energy Materials Water Each issue has an ID. The BREEAM navigator currently generates credits for the following issues: Daylighting HEA1 Indoor Air Quality HEA8 Thermal comfort HEA10 Emissions and free cooling ENE1 and ENE10 LZCT (Low and Zero Carbon Technologies) ENE5 Water and recycling WAT1 and WAT5 Materials specification MAT1 Materials responsible sourcing MAT5 Example of ENE1 (CO 2 emissions): 10 credits will be given if the EPC rating for a new school is 25. Only 9 credits will be awarded if the EPC rating is 28. Note: generally, the criteria for achieving credits vary for different types of building, and the number of credits available also varies with building type. 2
The table below shows the number of credits available for different buildings and issues. 3
Accessing the BREEAM Navigator 4
Navigator Quality Assurance functions Each navigator item has a notepad, check box (to remind you that you have completed that item) and an optional date/time stamp. Some navigator items perform functions when you click on them, and some navigator items are simply reminders (similar to items in a checklist) for you to do something. 5
Additionally, the entire workflow for a project can be copied and pasted (for example into a Word document). 6
BREEAM navigator items When to use the BREEAM navigator Model Geometry To create and edit the building geometry, or to import the building geometry you need to use the Geometry navigator (model geometry creation and editing is covered in ModelIT training). Model Data To create and edit the construction, thermal and HVAC system data for the building you need to use the Data navigator (creating this data is covered in Apache training). 7
BREEAM rating system Here you select the required rating system (or scheme) prior to running BREEAM analyses. 8
Daylighting HEA1 Credits are given for the quality of daylight achieved. First you will need to select which spaces are to be included in the analysis. 9
You will be shown how edit the Visible Light Transmittance (Tvis) for your required glazed construction. 10
Glazing assignments You will be shown how to select zones to which to apply glazing constructions and then how to assign glazing constructions to those zones. 11
Assigning surface relectances You will be shown how to select zones to which you wish to apply surface reflectances, and then how to assign values to those zones. 12
Setting surface grid size Performing the analysis and viewing the BREAAM report 13
We will now look at the results in the report. Summary table 14

Indoor air quality HEA8 This tool shows credits based on room CO 2 levels. However, in addition to this, a manual check must be carried out to ensure that air intakes and openings are a suitable distance from exhausts or other sources of pollution, in order to demonstrate compliance. Here you will need to select which spaces are to be included in the analysis. 17
Performing the simulation and viewing the BREAAM report 18
We will now look at the results in the report. Summary of results for analyses performed 19
HEA8 report A manual check must be carried out to ensure that air intakes and openings are a suitable distance from exhausts or other sources of pollution. 20
Thermal Comfort HEA10 Credits are given for room comfort in terms of temperatures and/or predicted mean vote (PMV) depending on building type and servicing strategy. Guidlelines can referred to in CIBSE Guide A table 1.5 and also in BB101 for Schools. Setting the weather data 21
Two PMV (predicted mean vote) airspeed settings are required; a nominal (winter) setting and an elevated or hot (summer value). Clothing levels (CLO) and metabolic levels (MET) are automatically set dependent on the building type. Next you will need to select which spaces are to be included in the analysis. 22
Performing the simulation and viewing the BREAAM report 23
Summary of results for analyses performed 24
Individual room results are shown below. All selected spaces must pass either temperature and/or PMV checks (depending on building type and if the space is air conditioned or naturally/mechanically ventilated) for a credit to be achieved. Standards for air conditioned and free-running spaces 25
Temperature assessment This table shows pass or fail during occupied hours where the test is applicable to the selected space. 26
PMV assessment This table shows pass or fail during occupied hours where the test is applicable to the selected space. PMV is dependent on temp, air speed, activity, clothing level, etc. 27
Emissions and free cooling ENE1 and ENE10 The emissions (ENE1) analysis uses the DSM (Dynamic Simulation Model) method to generate an EPC rating for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (not a Scottish EPC), by performing three simulations (on the Actual, Notional and Reference buildings). A maximum of 15 credits are available (the lower the EPC rating, the more credits awarded. For example, 10 credits will be given if the EPC rating for a new school is 25. Only 9 credits will be awarded if the EPC rating is 28. An exemplar credit (innovation credit) is available if the EPC rating is less than zero where the building services energy demand is zero or negative (a carbon neutral building). A further two exemplar credits are available if the building services energy plus operational energy demand is zero or negative (a true carbon zero building). Free cooling credits (ENE10) are only applicable for the Education rating system. For this example, before performing an analysis, we will select the Education rating system so that free cooling credits can be seen. An ENE10 credit is awarded if the building has any of the defined free cooling strategies or does not require any form of cooling (ie is mechanically ventilated), AND the criterion for HEA10 (thermal comfort) has been achieved. 28
Adjust weather file A Test Reference Year (TRY) weather file should be selected. If a TRY file is not used, a warning will appear. 29
Choose LZCT If any Low and Zero Carbon Technologies (LZCT) are being used, define them here. This will allow you to try out various renewable or low carbon technologies to assess their effect on energy and carbon dioxide emissions of your actual building, and hence on the EPC rating for ENE1. 30
Free cooling strategies Here you can set free cooling strategies for ENE10 (relevant for Schools and Higher Education only). 31
Simulation settings You will be shown how to define the settings for a DSM method analysis, including the buisling type and permeability data. 32
Performing the simulation and viewing the BREAAM report. The report shows the credits awarded including any exemplar credits. Summary of analyses performed 33
EPC rating achieved In the report you can compare Actual (BER) and Standard (SER) emission rates. 34
Viewing the model geometry and orientation The free cooling (ENE10) pass status is displayed. A report summary can be seen at the foot of the report. 35
LZCT (Low and Zero Carbon Technologies) ENE5 This analysis indicates the potential for on-site renewables and 100% renewable electricity supply contracts. The first credit is awarded if a feasibility study has been performed (and LZCT is implemented), or there is a minimum 3-year contract with an energy supplier to provide electricity from a 100% renewable source. Second and third credits are available if the first credit is achieved and LZCT is installed resulting in a 10% and 15% reduction in CO 2 emissions respectively and analysis has been performed using an approved energy modeling tool (eg the IES <VE>). An exemplary level credit is available if the first credit is achieved and LZCT is installed resulting in a 20% reduction in CO 2 emissions and an approved energy modeling tool has been used. 36
Performing the simulation and viewing the BREAAM report 37
The potential CO 2 reductions from the selected LZCT options can be seen. Renewable summary The ENE5 report summary shows the percentage savings from renewables in terms of both cost and CO2, and shows the credits awarded. 38
39
Water and recycling WAT1 and WAT5 This tool shows credits given for reduced water consumption and rain/waste water recycling. WAT1 gives credits for reducing potable water consumption. The better the reduction, the more credits awarded. WAT5 gives credits for rain and greywater recycling. The criteria for WAT1 and WAT5 credits vary with different types of buildings. WAT 5 does not apply to offices. You will be shown how to set the appliance data and any water recycling strategies. Performing the simulation and viewing the report 40
The proposed building water consumption breakdown is shown. The percentage water reduction potential can be seen. 41
Wat1 and Wat5 report Water recycling summary table Water recycling check status The pass/fail status against the relevant recycling assessment criteria are shown. Wat1 and Wat5 report summary 42
Materials specification MAT1 This tool is concerned with the environmental performance and impact of materials. The BRE s Green Guide to Specification provides ratings for constructions/materials on a scale from A+ to E based on environmental performance and environmental impact, where A+ is the best and E is the worst. The BREEAM MAT 1 calculator awards points by element Green Guide Rating (A+, A, B, C, D, E, equating with 3,2,1,0.5, 0.25,0 points respectively) then sums the points and weights by total type area to determine the BREEAM credits (1-14 points equating with 1-6 credits). Multiple constructions types are averaged and area weighted. An exemplary level credit is available if the points score is greater than 15 points (less than four elements) or greater than 16 points (four or more elements). You need to set the ratings for constructions used in your building, by using the Green Guide. 43
Generating the MAT1 report A summary is shown of constructions used in the building for each elemental category, elemental points awarded and the BREEAM MAT1 credits awarded. 44
Constructions used can also be seen in detail with individual materials shown. The report finishes with a summary of BREEAM MAT1 credits and the number of elemental points awarded. 45
Responsible Sourcing of Materials MAT5 BREEAM credits are awarded for responsible sourcing of construction products. Generally, to earn credits, at least 80% of applicable materials must be responsibly sourced (95% for an exemplary level credit). The MAT5 navigator generates a materials report to assist you in the MAT5 assessment process and the EMS (Environmental Management System) process required for these credits. Note that the IES MAT5 navigator does not calculate the credits awarded. It will generate the volume of materials used, for your subsequent input into the BREEAM MAT5 calculator. Collate materials This sorts and collates a summary of the materials used in the project. 46
You will then need to use a MAT5 calculator to determine the BREEAM MAT5 credits awarded. Up to 3 credits are available for new build and major refurbishment projects and up to 2 points for fit-out projects. This concludes the BREEAM Navigator training session. 47
