15 THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY Environmental, economic and social indicators tell us that our current model of progress is unsustainable. Climate change is destroying our path to sustainability. Ours is a world of looming challenges and increasingly limited resources. Sustainable development offers the best chance to adjust our course. 16 THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY Making The Revenant was about man s relationship to the natural world, the world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in reported history our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow, Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It s the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. Leonardo Di Caprio We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. 17 THE MEGATREND: GLOBAL LEVEL Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the global development goals proposed by the United Nations to which 194 countries politically committed on September 25 th SDGs period is SDGs is also called Agenda

18 THE MEGATREND: GLOBAL LEVEL Paris Agreement is one of the most important climate change agreement in the history after Kyoto Protocol. The agreement was ratified by 196 countries participating on December 12 th 2015 in the 21 st Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris. 18

19 THE MEGATREND: GLOBAL LEVEL European commission has EU Sustainable Development Strategy (since 2001) and Strategy for low-emission mobility. Norway aims for Zero Deforestation and Carbon Neutrality in 2030 France has a regulation that force listed companies to reveal their carbon emission statistics. It is also the first country to prohibit food waste from supermarkets. 19

21 THE MEGATREND: PRIVATE SECTOR Standards and Labels Companies at global level have to meet several health and environmental standards and acquire labels in order to sell in markets of developed countries. Sustainability is a must. 21

22 THE MEGATREND: PRIVATE SECTOR BMW will produce only Electric Vehicles (EV) in 10 years Honda will produce EV two-third of its total production in Starbucks, Nike, Walmart aim for 100% renewable energy use. The new office of Apple in Cupertino will also use100% renewable energy. 22

24 THE MEGATREND: PRIVATE SECTOR Nestlé uses100% sustainably produced cocoa product. Dunkin Donut uses 100% certified Rainforest-Alliance coffee beans. Starbucks is experimenting on recyclable cup to reduce waste. Mars Food aim to use 100% sustainably produced rice in its product by

25 THE MEGATREND: PRIVATE SECTOR MIT and BCG surveyed 3000 executives and investors in 100 countries in 2015 Findings 60% of the executives believe that good sustainability performance is important to investors investment decision. 75% of the investors believe that companies with sustainability investment will earn more income, have higher efficiency, and reduce risks. 60% of the investors will divest from companies with low sustainability performance. 25

26 THE MEGATREND: PRIVATE SECTOR 2016 Cone Communications: Employee Engagement Study A survey of 1,020 employees, age more than 20 years old, in large-size companies (more than 1000 employees) in the U.S. Mature Millennial (age 27-35) - 79% Young Gen X (age 36-44) - 68% Average American - 58% Will choose to work for companies with social and environmental responsibilities. 26

29 HOW TO WRITE A COLLEGE LEVEL ESSAY Composing a piece of writing, no matter what the genre is, can be a complicated task if the correct steps are not taken and successfully completed.

30 1. RESEARCH Read the instruction and make sure you understand your task. Make sure you research the topic as much as possible. Know the material(s) inside and out Academic sources. News articles and discussion forums may be used depending on the topic of the research.

31 1.1. ACADEMIC SOURCES? Also called scholarly sources include: Academic Books Scholarly journals Published expert reports Some online articles* They are peer-reviewed The writers of these sources are experts and often have affiliation(s) These sources usually published by reputable publishers

32 1.2. WHERE ARE ACADEMIC SOURCES? Library Online Google Scholar Web of Science Econlit Etc. Wikipedia articles and most websites are NOT academic sources

33 2. ANALYSE THE INFORMATION What is the article/author/researcher actually saying? Accurate? Check with other sources Credible? Who write the article? Is the article prone to bias?

34 3. TAKE YOUR STANCE! (UNLESS YOUR RESEARCH IS EXPLORATORY) Form and draft your argument(s) I agree I disagree I agree to a large/small extent Explain your argument(s) and make sure you have evidence(s) Never make any claims without evidence(s) Beware of biased language Plan BEFORE you write!

35 4. CONSTRUCT YOUR THESIS Synthesise your main points and argument of the paper into a coherent sentence or two Create an outline of your paper - It will serve as a guideline for the paper Using a logical progression of ideas. Having a clear sense of audience, genre, and purpose.

36 5. WRITE Introduction - Compose your introduction that starts with a hook Body - Make sure each body paragraph has a single main idea. Conclusion - Tie together your essay with a final conclusion of your argument. Cite BEWARE of Plagiarism Revise and Reflect Is my writing appropriate for my audience? Do not expect your readers to know what you know. Match the tone and style consistent with your discipline

39 5.3. ENGLISH LANGUAGE Never start a sentence with But, And, or Because Use words like Nevertheless, However, In addition, Additionally, or This is because instead. Use Punctuation Correctly Avoid Plagiarism Avoid excessive use of personal pronounce (I, you, we) Avoid informal, conversational tone using slang and idioms.

41 Rules concerning excellent grammar and precise word structure do not apply when quoting someone. But do not forget to cite after you quote!

I think I am highly qualified for the position of professional apprentice at your great organisation, because I have spent many laborious years studying the ways of government entities at an accredited institution of higher learning in the great major of political science.
