2 Always a step ahead The development of a new measurement system For more than 60 years, Dräger Sicherheitstechnik GmbH has developed, produced, and distributed systems and instruments for the measurement of hazardous substances in the workplace. With increasingly stringent requirements for measurement technology as a result of lower regulatory contamination limits, together with growing demand for measurement due to the increasing number of known substances, there is a need for more practical and diverse directreading systems for spot measurements. Specifically, there are calls for higher sensitivity, selectivity, flexibility and indeed reusability in the interests of environmentally friendly recycling. Many users from various industries and branches of expertise have approached Dräger Sicherheitstechnik GmbH with requests for a new, more appropriate measurement system that addresses the changing conditions regarding regulatory compliance. During the development of this new measurement system, discussions with users of all kinds of existing measurement systems provided a source of valuable input. In this way, new questions and user requirements could be considered and incorporated during development. As a result of our efforts, we present the entirely new Dräger CMS, the Chip Measurement System for the measurement of gas and vapor concentrations.

3 Validation by independent institutions For each measurement system, performance data are listed in the Instructions for Use. Normally, these data are then validated by independent testing institutions. 4 The system The Dräger CMS combines the practical needs of the user with the power of intelligent technology. It is one of the most accurate and reliable spot measurement systems currently available for the measurement of gas and vapor concentrations. The system consists of two components: The analyzer and substancespecific chips. The analyzer is the measurement and evaluation instrument for the system. A number of chips serve as chemical sensors which allow the system to measure a huge variety of different gases and vapors. It makes no difference whether the user wishes to perform a selective and sensitive measurement of a gas like benzene, which previously could only be detected by means of time-consuming and costly laboratory analysis, or whether an easily detected vapor such as hydrochloric acid needs to be analyzed - the intelligent interaction between chip and analyzer always ensures a high level of accuracy and reliability. The underlying principle of the Chip Measurement System is the combination of electronics, optics, chemical reagent systems, and a special pump system. With this combination, the Dräger CMS represents the new standard for spot measurement of gases and vapors.

6 The analyzer The analyzer features a handy, robust case combined with an attractive appearance. The design was influenced by the ergonomics required for one-hand operation. Six areas of expertise define the technology: Electronics Mechanics Pump system Optics Software DataRecorder All the processes in the analyzer are controlled by the electronics with the help of microprocessors. The entire manual measurement procedure is menu-driven. Together with the automatic system test, this ensures a high degree of measurement reliability. The mechanics ensure the precise transport and positioning of the chip in the analyzer. The flow sensor is integrated in the pump system and functions according to the mass flow measurement principle. This ensures a constant mass flow of the sample through the chip, regardless of fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. The constant mass flow, together with the sensitivity of the reagent system in the chip, forms the essential basis for the impressive accuracy of the measurement principle. The optics perform several different tasks In preparation for the measurement, the optics recognize the type of chip and the number of available measurement channels in the chip. Its most important task, however, is the reliable assessment of the reaction between the reagent system and the sampled gas. The smallest reaction can be detected and registered by the software. Along with the reagent system and the pump system, this is the third guarantee of the excellent degree of accuracy of the Dräger CMS. The reaction effect from the gas sample is converted to a value by the software program, and is then displayed in plaintext in the form of a concentration in the digital readout. The analyzer is equipped with an integrated DataRecorder and a realtime clock. In keeping with the CMS ease-of-use philosophy, storing measurement results with the Data- Recorder is a simple, menu-driven process. Up to 50 measurement results can be stored with the name of the measured gas, the concentration, date and time of the measurement, together with a code letter to help identify the measurement location. The analyzer does not require any maintenance, though an annual verification test is recommended.

7 The chips Each chip contains 10 measurement capillaries, or measurement channels, filled with a substance-specific reagent system. Low quantities of reagent ensure a quick and reproducible reaction with the sample gas or vapor. Each chip is calibrated at the factory and can be used for up to two years. The interaction between the various chips and the analyzer is controlled by the chip bar code. This bar code is printed on the chip and is read by the analyzer optics and interpreted by the analyzer software. The bar code contains all the essential information such as gas type, measurement range, and other parameters needed for the measurement evaluation. Chip Measurement range 1) Order no. 8 Simple operation The Dräger CMS can be implemented with a minimum of training costs. One reason for this is that the measurement procedure is always the same, regardless of the gas or vapor to be measured. Straightforward menu commands in the display and one-switch operation further simplify the measurement procedure. A display with backlighting provides text in either English, French, German or Spanish. Once the analyzer is switched on, it performs a system self-test and is immediately ready for use. A chip is inserted into the analyzer, the measurement is performed and the measurement result is displayed as a concentration in the display. After the measurement is complete, the chip is automatically ejected and the analyzer switches itself off. A tone signal sounds at the end of each step of the operation. The power supply is provided by four standard, easily replaceable batteries, chosen to meet the specific requirements of the analyzer (see technical data). The battery capacity corresponds to a measurement time of over seven measurement hours. Available battery capacity is shown in the display.

9 Simply accurate The principle of mass flow control ensures independence from fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. Since the chips are calibrated at the factory, calibration in the field is not necessary. Factory calibration determines any potential temperature and humidity effects. The analyzer is intrinsically safe and certified in accordance with Cenelec (Europe); UL (U.S.A.), UL/CSA (Canada), WorkCover (Australia). Additionally, the system is protected against dust and spray water in accordance with the IP 54 standard, and it is resistant to electromagnetic radiation. Remote system In order to measure in inaccessible areas, the analyzer can be equipped with a remote system which consists of an additional pump and an extension hose. The remote system is attached to the back of the analyzer. As the remote system is activated by its own switch, it can remain attached to the analyzer. Additionally, a telescopic probe may be used for probe sampling.
