1 ALL printed copies of this procedure are considered uncontrolled copies TITLE Waste Management Plan for Petroleum Field Laboratories, Fox Creek AUTHORIZATION Crystal Watson HAZARD RED REVISION. See LIMS EFFECTIVE DATE 29 May 2013 LAST REVIEW DATE 29 May REVISION HISTORY 1.1 Version control for this document will be managed through the LABLynx LIMS. Revision Date Description of Change or Reference 11 Sept 2013 New Document 21 May 2013 Updates made to include handling of heavy wastes. 2.0 SCOPE 2.1 This procedure has been developed in order to outline the Waste Management Plan for Petroleum Field Laboratory. The nature of the industries this laboratory services results in wastes with various degrees of hazards, this procedure and associated flowchart will assisted in determining appropriate methods of disposal for all waste types. This plan applies to all departments of the laboratory that generates waste. 3.0 REFRENCE 3.1 Armour, M.A, Browne, L.M, and Weir, G.L. Hazardous Chemicals information and disposal guide. Third Edition. 4.0 RESPONBILITIES 4.1 The Laboratory Manager shall be responsible for ensuring compliance with this procedure 4.2 The Quality Manager or designate shall responsible for ensuring the quality control procedures are done routinely. 4.3 The analyst shall be responsible for ensuring analyses are done in compliance with this procedure. 5.0 PARTICULARS 5.1 Hazardous waste containers should remain closed unless adding or removing waste. If you use a funnel to transfer waste, remove the funnel after the transfer and close the container. A closed container is one whose contents would not spill if the container were knocked over. When adding waste to a container, do not completely fill the container. Leave space for the contents to expand. Containers and chemicals Page 1 of 4

2 ALL printed copies of this procedure are considered uncontrolled copies TITLE Waste Management Plan for Petroleum Field Laboratories, Fox Creek AUTHORIZATION Crystal Watson HAZARD RED REVISION. See LIMS EFFECTIVE DATE 29 May 2013 LAST REVIEW DATE 29 May 2013 may expand or contract based on temperature. Transfer of hazardous waste is not recommended. If a transfer is necessary, ensure adequate spill response equipment is available, wear PPE, and use adequate transferring mechanisms, e.g. funnel. 5.2 Certain waste items are not removed from the lab in a scheduled manner, and therefore removal is dependent on quantity on hand. When waste levels reach a state that removal off-site is necessary refer to the flowchart for the appropriate contact for disposal. 5.3 Wherever feasible, the generation of waste should be reduced or eliminated. 5.0 SAFETY 5.1 Hazard Identification This procedure has received a RED level hazard classification. Refer to attached hazard assessment for details Improper disposal could lead to potentially hazardous reactions, contamination of the environment, and physical injury Heavy waste items can lead to injuries and potential spills with mishandling. 5.2 Personal Protective Equipment Personal protective equipment may vary based on the nature of the items being disposed of, however the following are available Nomex IIIA lab coat or coveralls Latex or Nitrile gloves Safety Glasses Proper closed toe footwear MedPro Respirators 5.3 Hazard Controls Employees will be trained on proper waste management as related to their position within the company. Employees will be given the opportunity to learn waste management outside of their position if it is required Chemicals are stored by chemical groups, and are clearly labelled as such. Items should still however be checked prior to disposal to ensure that the physical state of the item will not create a hazard for disposal, and that the item was not misplaced in storage. 3 ALL printed copies of this procedure are considered uncontrolled copies TITLE Waste Management Plan for Petroleum Field Laboratories, Fox Creek AUTHORIZATION Crystal Watson HAZARD RED REVISION. See LIMS EFFECTIVE DATE 29 May 2013 LAST REVIEW DATE 29 May The hazard level of the item is marked through the hazard identification stickers. Caution should still be taken when disposing of items with a low hazard identification; a low hazard identification does not mean that disposal through drain or regular garbage is acceptable Refer to Safe Chemical Handling Procedure to determine specific hazards associated with waste to be disposed When waste is being transported off-site via lab pack refer to the handlers from the disposal company that all proper TDGs (transportation of dangerous goods) are followed Waste will be disposed of frequently in order to avoid large amounts of waste being stored onsite. Large amounts of waste are often heavy or awkward for disposal leading to increased risk of injury or spills. If a large amount of waste requires removal employees should seek assistance 6.0 QUALITY CONTROL 6.1 Samples will be disposed of no sooner than 30 days after testing has been completed. In certain circumstances or if requested by a client samples can be held for longer than 30 days. The exact amount of time samples are held will vary based on the situation or request. However if a technician feels that a sample is unstable, or too hazardous for storage a sample can be disposed of immediately to ensure the safety of all lab personnel. 7.0 ACTIONS 7.1 Waste Management When waste is needed to be disposed of lab personnel should refer to the Petroleum Field Laboratory Waste Determinations Classification Flowchart to determine the appropriate method of disposal. Once this has been completed the waste can be disposed of as indicated on the Flowchart Items must also be removed from the LABLynx LIMS system when the item has been disposed The item s inventory page should be selected, the Amount on Hand should be changed to the appropriate amount with the removal of the item (i.e. 100mL container disposed of a 1000mL lot, new amount on hand 900mL). Page 3 of 4
