Light bulbs Outline of activity A survey of the lights used in the school. Resources Examples of light bulbs: Filament bulb, Strip light, Energy efficient light bulb Introduction Look at the different types of lights commonly used, and discuss Jack s reasons for choosing an energy efficient bulb. Did you know? A Compact Fluorescent Lamp [CFL]: uses about /5 of the energy of a filament bulb lasts about 8 - times as long as a filament bulb will save about 7 worth of electricity per year. If every home in the UK replaced a 00W filament bulb with a 0W CFL, the amount of energy saved would be the same as that produced by a nuclear power station. Points to note: Remind children to keep to the areas they are surveying, and not to go elsewhere without permission and supervision. This will be much more worthwhile if the school is able to act on the pupils suggestions.

Background Filament bulb If you ve touched an ordinary light bulb when it s on, you know that it gets hot! You want your light bulb to give you light, not heat. The heat is a waste of electricity. You should only use them in places where they are used for a short time (eg. store cupboards). Strip light (Also known as a Fluorescent Tube) This uses most of the electrical energy to make light. It does not waste as much energy as heat. Strip lights are useful in places where you need light for a long time (eg classrooms). Energy efficient bulb (Also known as a Compact Fluorescent Lamp [CFL]) This is like a strip light, but made into a neater shape to look more like a normal bulb. It can give a more pleasant light than a strip light. CFLs are useful in places where you need light for a long time (eg. classrooms). Compare the ratings of lights: eg. A 0Watt energy efficient bulb will give the same amount of light as a 00Watt filament bulb. Additional activities Art Design a poster to encourage people to use energy efficient bulbs [CFLs]. Maths Compare the ratings of lights: eg. A 0Watt energy efficient bulb will give the same amount of light as a 00Watt filament bulb.

Activity Survey of lighting ALWAYS SWITCH OFF LIGHTS THAT YOU DON T NEED! 3 Look at the different types of lights used in your school. Are the lights suitable for the place they are in? Record your findings on this survey sheet. Lighting Survey Sheet Which part of school? Type of light Suitable? (eg. classroom, hall) Filament Strip Energy efficient Yes / No bulb light bulb If you think the school could save money by changing some of the lights, tell the head teacher. You could do a survey like this at home. FACT Some people think it s alright to leave energy efficient lights on for a long time, because they are cheaper to run. But they are still using electricity, so we should only use them when we really need them.

Getting to school Outline of activity Survey of methods of travelling to and from school. Any particular danger spots could it be made safer? Resources Travel-to-School Questionnaire, clipboards, pencils Background Walking is still the dominant mode accounting for 49% of journeys. However, car use has increased substantially, bus use has remained fairly constant, and cycling has decreased. Cars taking children to school are an increasing share of road traffic in the morning peak period. The greatest volume in 996/98 was at 8.50 am when 8% of road traffic in urban areas was generated by the school run, compared with 4% in 989/9. Additional activities For a more detailed survey, see: Pupil%0Questionnaire.doc Try this travel quiz: microsites/p/planet/takcar.html Safe Routes to Schools

Activity Points for discussion (before and after) How do pupils get to school? Why do they use that method of travel? Are there any problems? Any particular danger spots could it be made safer? Why are the numbers of cars increasing? Would the survey results be different in different weather? Traffic Facts One in seven children (on average) suffers from asthma. (One in three in inner cities.) There s more pollution inside cars than outside in slow moving traffic. People who cycle or walk briskly for half an hour a day have half the risk of heart disease. More children now travel to school by car. Fewer children now walk or cycle. Walking or cycling to school makes children more alert and ready to face the school day than if they have been sitting in a car. Children who are more physically active do better in school

Activity Jack has to choose the most environmentally friendly way of going to the shops. Which does he choose? It is a good choice because Find out how people get to your school Use the Travel-to-School Questionnaire, or design your own. You could show the answers on a graph or pie chart. Make a poster to encourage people to walk, cycle or use buses Here are some reasons why that s better than using cars: Not so many accidents Less pollution Not so many traffic jams Better health More fun!

Travel - to - school questionnaire Underline the answers: Name How do you usually travel to/from school? walk cycle car bus other How far do you travel to school? less than km -.9 km -.9 km km km 5 km and over If you could choose, how would you like to travel to school? walk cycle car bus other If you don t walk or cycle to school, what is your main reason? 6 Are there any particular danger spots? Do cars and/or buses cause problems near your school? yes no If you usually travel to school by car, how many other pupils usually travel with you? none one two three If you usually travel to school by car, is the journey just to bring you to school? yes no How many cars are there at home?

e c o eco s a v e y g r e n e save energy Outline of activity Washing powder Find out why Jack bought Eco-wash washing powder. Resources Examples of different laundry products, such as detergents, biological powders, washing liquids, including some eco friendly products. (simple chart included if required) e c o w a s h Activity w a s h wash Look at different brands of washing powder, liquids, and tablets. Read the labels to see which claim to be friendly to the environment. Discuss different ways of recording the answers. Other information could be included, such as: e c o w a s h type of packaging whether it can how much in the pack price be re-used / recycled / composted

Washing powder worksheet Brand of powder Is it Eco-Friendly? Type of packaging Whether it can be How much in Price re-used/recycled the pack? composted
