Updates to ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard , Ventilation of Health Care Facilities BY CHRIS P. ROUSSEAU, PE, LEED AP 30 th Annual AHCA Seminar and 52 nd Annual FHEA Meeting Orlando, Florida September 22, 2014

2008 Edition vs Edition Addenda to 2008 Edition included in 2013 Edition Addenda to 2008 Edition will remain on ASHRAE Standards website 2013 Edition addenda will include ad and ae 2013 Edition addenda after ad and ae will start over with a

Addenda Overall Status 1 Addendum Approved (b) 0 Addenda Reviewing Public Comments 3 Addenda Currently Out for Public Review (c, d, e 9/12/14) 3 Addenda Pending Final Approval (ad, ae, a)

Addendum y Status Approved Included in 2013 Edition Topic Duct Lining a. An exterior vapor barrier shall be provided for insulation on cold surfaces. A vapor barrier is not required for insulation materials that do not absorb or transmit moisture. b. Existing insulation and duct lining accessible during a renovation project shall be inspected, repaired, and/or replaced as appropriate. c. Duct lining shall not be used in ductwork located downstream of Filter Bank #2. Duct lining with an impervious cover may be allowed in terminal units, sound attenuators, and air distribution devices downstream of Filter Bank #2. This lining and cover shall be factory installed. d. Duct lining shall not be installed within 15 ft (4.57 m) downstream of humidifiers.

Addendum ad Status Pending Final Approval Topic Exam Rooms Reduced minimum total air change rate from 6 to 4

Addendum ae Status Pending Final Approval Topic Coordination with FGI These items are based on comments received during public reviews in the 2014 Guidelines revision process Delete reference to FGI Guidelines in Paragraph 6.1.2, Heating and Cooling Sources Clarify Paragraph b that critical exhaust must be a minimum of 10 from intakes, vs. 25 Clarify Paragraph b to require, rather than suggest, that ventilation rates for spaces not indicated in Table 7-1 be obtained from Standard 62 Clarify AII Room and PE Room terminology in Paragraph e (and a) provide a minimum differential pressure vs. limit leakage airflow. Clarify in Paragraph 8.2.b that sufficient space for maintenance of equipment is that required by the manufacturer. Clarify in Paragraph 8.6 that diffusers for delivery rooms, trauma rooms, wound intensive care rooms, PE rooms and CCU and ICU rooms be cleaned initially and at regular intervals.

Addendum a Status Pending Final Approval Topic Separation of Intake and Gas Vent for Packaged Roof-top Units Exception to 25 rule. Not a health care-specific issue Narrow-focus topic not for other applications Exception: For gas-fired, packaged rooftop units, the separation distance of the unit s outdoor air intake from its flue may be less than 25 feet. The separation distance shall be greater than or equal to the distance prescribed in Table 5-1, Air Intake Minimum Separation Distance, in ASHRAE Standard

Addendum b Status Approved Topic Reference Updates

Addendum c Status Out for Public Review Review Opens 9/12/14 Review Closes 10/12/14 Topic Laboratory Work Areas Terminology coordinated with FGI Laboratory Work Areas vs. Laboratories Specific types of laboratory work areas condensed Minimum air change rate standardized at 6 Reduction allowed via ANSI Z9.5 risk assessment or active sensing of contaminants approach Allowance included for positive pressure applications

Addendum c Function of Space RADIOLOGY (v) Pressure Relationship to Adjacent Areas (n) Minimum Outdoor ach Minimum Total ach All Room Air Exhausted Directly to Outdoors (j) Air Recirculated by Means of Room Units (a) Design Relative Humidity (k), % Design Temperature (l), F/ C DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT Laboratory, general (v) Negative 2 6 NR NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, bacteriology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, biochemistry (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, cytology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, glasswashing Negative 2 10 Yes NR NR NR Laboratory, histology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, microbiology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, nuclear medicine (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, pathology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, serology (v) Negative 2 6 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, sterilizing Negative 2 10 Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 Laboratory, media transfer (v) Positive 2 4 NR NR NR 70 75/21 24 SERVICE Laboratory Work Areas Negative (z) 2 6 (f) Yes NR NR 70 75/21 24 (v)

Addendum c Table 7-1 Notes: f. This letter is not used in this table. Higher ventilation rates above 6 total ach shall be used when dictated by the laboratory program requirements and the hazard level of the potential contaminants in each Laboratory Work Area. Lower total ach ventilation rates shall be permitted when either: (a) a risk assessment per the ANSI/AIHA/ASSE Z9.5 Laboratory Ventilation Standard 13 determines that no hazardous contaminants will be present in the Laboratory Work Area, or (b) a demand control approach with active sensing of contaminants is used as described in Chapter 16 of the ASHRAE HVAC Applications Handbook on Laboratories (see ASHRAE [2011b] in Informative Appendix B). v. When required, appropriate hoods and exhaust devices for the removal of noxious gases or chemical vapors shall be provided in accordance with NFPA Room temperatures or humidity ranges that exceed the minimum indicated ranges shall be used if required by the laboratory program or laboratory equipment. z. Certain laboratory program requirements such as media transfer require positive pressure relationships for a Laboratory Work Area. In these cases the laboratory program requirement shall be modified to be a positive pressure relationship.

Addendum d Status Out for Public Review Review Opens 9/12/14 Review Closes 10/12/14 Topic Exhaust Discharge Requirements Generally relaxes requirements for less serious exhaust airstreams Requires fume hood exhaust to discharge at a minimum of 2500 fpm Allows exception to 25 separation from intakes, windows, etc. if a re-entrainment study is performed

Addendum e Status Out for Public Review Review Opens 9/12/14 Review Closes 10/12/14 Topic Switchable Pressure Rooms Applies non-switching rule to all spaces that have differential pressure requirements listed in Table 7.1, not just AII rooms
