How to sort paper correctly? Paper is a very well recyclable material. Why then to destroy our forests to obtain raw material for paper manufacture if we can use paper already made and no longer needed? Reuse of one tonne of collected used paper can save around 17 forest trees plus up to 50% of energy and 40% of water which must undergo complex treatment after use. Paper is waste people produce most of all. Each of us generates kg of waste a year, of which 30kg of paper, 25 kg of plastics and 15 kg of glass. Paper is discarded to (mostly blue) paper containers. Office paper Exercise books Newspapers and magazines Advertising leaflets Carton boxes Cardboard Wax and carbon paper Dressings Sanitary towels Used paper tissues Tetrapack Wet, greased and contaminated paper If you are not sure whether a certain product or package is made of paper only and therefore may be discarded in a paper container, find material identification of the product/package. Paper container may be used for discarding products with the following identification (the number is framed in the well-known triangle with verbal identification under it): This identification system is standardised in ČSN Myths on paper sorting and recycled paper Waste Identification Number Corrugated PAP 20 cardboard Plain cardboard PAP 21 Paper PAP Metal staples must be removed? This is not true, for in the course of primary paper processing, called fiberization, when the paper is turned to pulp, the staples sink to the bottom where they are separated (sorted out) with magnet which, as is well known, attracts metals. Transparent plastic envelope windows must be removed? Even the transparent foil windows on envelopes are not a problem the processors are unable to resolve. Recycled paper cannot be used in printers? This is only partly true. Ordinary recycled paper is not designed for printers and may damage them. However, our market has recently begun to offer recycled paper for printers. This paper is available at nearly all well supplied stationers. The difference is that the recycled office paper is not as fluffy and dusty as classical recycled paper and therefore cannot damage the printer.

How to sort plastics correctly? Plastics take much longer to degrade in a dump or just littered somewhere in the nature than paper. Why then burden our environment with substances that are not part of it when they can be reprocessed? For example used PET bottles represent our biggest item of export to China. Needless to say that one of the biggest issues of storage of this waste is its volume, therefore before you put a plastic bottle to a waste bin press it first. This will save you frequent journeys to the container and your waste will not fill so much space. Plastic waste is to be discarded in the large yellow or otherwise coloured containers reading "PLASTICS". PET bottles Plastic bags Films Polystyrene Plastic cups, trays, cutlery Other products of plastics Greased or otherwise contaminated packages of non-biological origin PVC, linoleums Plastic pipes Textiles of man-made fibre Plastic chemical containers Rubber, tyres, foam plastics If you are not sure whether a certain product or package is made of plastic and therefore may be discarded in a plastics container, find material identification of the product/package. Plastic container may be used for discarding products with the following identification (the number is framed in the well-known triangle with verbal identification under it): This identification system is standardised in ČSN Waste ID No Polyethylene-tere-phthalate PET 1 High-density (linear) polyethylene HDPE 2 Poly-vinyl-chloride PVC 3 Low-density (branched) polyethylene LDPE 4 Polypropylene PP 5 Polystyrene PS 6 There are also many combined products on the market with identification C/separated abbreviations of the respective materials/. Their numerical IDs can be found in the abovementioned standard. Myths on plastics sorting Remove the cap and the label before placing a PET bottle in the container. You can place PET bottles in the container with their paper labels and caps. The processors will take care of them. Food residues must be removed from packages before their discarding in the container. No, just eat the food or scrape the container walls. Residues may stay in. PVC is also a plastic and should be discarded in the yellow container. No, PVC should not be placed in the plastics container. Processing of sorted plastics is done under high temperatures which release harmful chlorinated substances from PVC.

How to sort glass correctly? Glass with its nine percent (Source: Eko-kom,a.s.) forms a significant part of the total generated waste. As you all know, glass is one of the well recyclable materials and therefore should be preferred as product packaging to plastics. Many people may argue "Why should I carry a heavy glass bottle when I can buy the same drink in lightweight plastic? Well, be frank: Most of us go by car to do shopping, at lest the big shopping. There are certainly the large green containers reading "GLASS" near your home, often two of them, one for white glass and the other for colour glass. Please place glass bottles that are not returnable to these containers without caps. Dispose of the caps according to the material they are made from. Take returnable bottles to your next shopping trip and exchange them for money which you can use to buy further drinks for yourselves. Glass bottles from drinks Glass containers Glazing panes Glass splinters Glass bottles from chemicals and other hazardous substances Mirrors Wire glass, car windshields Ceramics, china If you are not sure whether a certain product or package is made of glass and therefore may be discarded in a glass container, find material identification of the product/package. Glass container may be used for discarding products with the following identification (the number is framed in the well-known triangle with verbal identification under it): This identification system is standardised in ČSN There are also many combined products on the market with identification C/separated abbreviations of the respective materials/. Their numerical IDs can be found in the abovementioned standard. These combined materials are mostly non-recyclable. Myths on glass sorting Waste ID No White glass GL 70 Green glass GL 71 Grown glass GL 72 Other glass Broken ceramics and china are discarded as glass. No. Thee materials are not made of glass but using a completely different manufacturing procedure.

How to sort beverage carton boxes correctly? Like a lot of other waste ending in dumps or incinerators carton boxes from beverages (Tetrapack) contain valuable and well reusable raw materials. This is especially true about carton. Carton can be reused in two different ways, either in paper mills for paper manufacture or for building material production. Unfortunately, special waste containers for Tetrapack boxes are rare in our country. To make up for this shortage some cities organise collections of this type of packages by announcing the collection days and places where people can bring this waste. There are also cities organising collection of Tetrapack boxes together with plastics and separating them in sorting lines. In all cases the boxes should be rinsed, levelled in corners and then pressed by stamping on them with your feet. Clean Tetrapack boxes from beverages Dirty multilayer beverage boxes Paper Plastics Glass Metals If you are not sure whether a certain product or package is of Tetrapack type and thus may be discarded in a Tetrapack container/bag, find material identification of the product/package. Tetrapack container may be used for discarding products of the following identification (the number framed in the well-known triangle with verbal identification under it) This identification system is standardised in ČSN There are also many combined products on the market with identification C/separated abbreviations of the respective materials/. Myth on beverage carton sorting Waste ID No TetraPack and CombiBlock C/* 84 The Tetrapack containers are defective. The carton box cannot be thrown into them... No, the need to press the box before discarding in the container is written on every container. The opening in the container is specially constructed for pressed cartons. This is the only way to collect more cartons in the container and avoid discarding waste not belonging to this container into it! Before sorting a Tetrapack I must tear off the plastic stopper. No, if your town organises collection of beverage cartons, just rinse the empty Tetrapack with water, press and throw with the stopper into the container or orange bag reserved for this waste in your town.

How to sort biological waste correctly? Biological waste makes up for more than 40% of communal waste. Where bio waste remains part of residual waste, it degrades in dumps without air (oxygen) access, which generates dangerous liquor and especially greenhouse gases (methane and others) causing global warming. Biological waste may be used for production of quality compost whether in industrial settings or in smaller amounts by domestic composting. Composting is a process of aerobic degradation by bacteria, mould and yeast. Return of compost to the soil in the form of fertilizer is vital for permanent maintenance of soil quality. What is and what is not compost? Plants discarded from kitchens Egg and nut shells Residues of pastry and cereals Coffee grounds (with filter), tea bags Garden waste Crushed branches Manure from domestic animal breeding Hen droppings Ash from wood burning Food residues of animal origin Meat residues Bones Droppings and bedding of carnivorous animals Tree trunks and big branches Hazardous waste Paper and carton, plastics, glass Where to with it? A reserved corner in the garden should be used for biological waste storage. Composting and sorting of biological waste is not reserved for gardeners only, though. Many cities already organise projects for collection of bio degradable waste. The prime option is collection in a reserved area - for example in a scrap yard, or collection and disposal from special containers right from the households. A special container may be a waste bin or container made to collect biological waste. These containers are made with perforated double coating for air circulation within the container and with a drain basin for juice or liquor collection. Appropriate aeration and correct use considerably reduce odour. Myths on biological waste sorting Compost will degrade everything. No, bacteria and yeasts are not omnipotent. Degradation of plastics, construction debris and other inert or poorly degradable materials cannot be accelerated by composting. Tree branches are plant material and therefore can go to compost. Yes and no, only small twigs can go to compost without cutting and other treatment, while big branches and tree trunks may only be composted after crushing. Biological waste bins produce more odour than ordinary waste. No, biological waste bins are made with special structure allowing for aeration, reduction of liquid waste and thus elimination of odour.

Scrap Yard Regional Centre in Hodonín for Communal Waste Disposal What can be brought to the scrap yard and what not? The Hodonín Scrap Yard can be found in Měšťanská street no 78. In 2006 the yard underwent a complex reconstruction. In its context the yard was equipped with a new hazardous waste storage facility, a sorting line for paper, plastics and Tetrapack cartons, new ramps and a bridge scale for waste weighing. The scrap yard may be used by citizens of Hodonín free of charge after documenting their permanent residence, but also by citizens of other municipalities who can place their waste here for a charge according to the currently valid price list. Hazardous waste (paints, lacquers, glues, solvents, oils, chemicals, acids, caustics, packages contaminated with hazardous substances, batteries, fluorescent tubes, drugs ) Voluminous waste (old furniture, carpets, linoleum) Construction debris for recycling (brick, concrete, concrete or fired tiles) Construction debris for disposal (eternit, china, paving stones, bitumen) Electric and electronic appliances (refrigerators, stoves, microwave ovens, TV sets, computers and computer components, hair dryers, telephone apparatuses, DVD and CD players ) Wood and biological waste Iron and non-ferrous metal scrap Paper, plastics, Tetrapacks, glass Automobile tyres Polystyrene Explosives, radioactive substances, by-products of animal origin and other wastes not listed in the Rules of Operation of the scrap yard. Sorting Line A device for manual sorting of collected paper and plastic packages. Here the waste is sorted by type of paper and plastic package, pressed into bales and shipped to processors or traders. Opening hours: For citizens: Mon-Fri 6:00 am - 6:00 pm Sat 10:00 am - 5:00 pm For businesses: Mon-Fri 6:00-10:00 am and 12:00-2:00 pm Sat Closed
