Physical Plant s efforts to help FGCU Go Green

Who are we? Physical Plant is a FGCU department that provides resources and constantly maintains all university buildings, grounds, and equipment that are fundamental to a healthy academic environment.

Chiller Plant Expansion Increasing Energy Efficiency Present and Future

Chiller Plant Expansion The Central Energy Plant was the first building constructed at FGCU in It houses chillers with the capacity of 1,847 tons, but more is needed as the campus grows. The Central Energy Plant uses thermal ice storage to cool the buildings during peak hours, which are 12-noon to 9-pm. During off-peak hours, the chillers create and store thermal ice to be used during the peak hours of the day, saving money and resources by not running when demand is highest.

Chiller Plant Expansion The current 146 total thermal storage tanks produce 23,360 tons of cooling capacity that is used by the central academic areas In 2009 was the final expansion of this facility, a new chiller plant will be required to support additional facilities beyond those currently under construction.

Environmental Initiatives Physical Plant Physical Plant maintains campus buildings, grounds and provides facilities services Staff and student workers Physical Plant student workers learn to put into practice what they learn in the classroom in an active work environment and gain valuable experience for their career.

Tree Campus USA is a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, which recognizes college and university campuses across the nation that: Manage their campus trees effectively. Develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests. Utilize service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community, forestry efforts. A committee was formed consisting of students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community to develop the Tree Campus Plan. FGCU was designated as a Tree Campus USA institution on January 9, 2010

RecycleMania: competition that endorses recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities on campus communities. Fourth consecutive year FGCU will be competing in: - Grand Champion: combines trash and each of the core recyclable materials to determine a school s recycling rate as a percentage of its overall waste generation - Per Capita Classic: paper, cardboard and bottles and cans on a per person basis. - Waste Minimization: produces the least amount of both recyclables and trash on a per person basis In 2012, FGCU ranked #1 public university in Florida

Resource Reduction

Dual Flushing Toilets Tilt the handle UP for a reduced flush. Tilt the handle DOWN for a full flush. These new Dual-Flush toilets can save a ½ a gallon of water per flush, but only if we use them properly. The new handles on the valves are Green. The handles are coated with specially formulated antimicrobial coating to protect against germs. Student Union Academic Building 5 Campus Support Complex

Resource Reduction: EAGLESYTAP WATER In the Fall of 2009, the Physical Plant has started a campaign to be spread campus-wide called the Eagles Y Tap Water Campaign. This campaign involved the installation of vertical spigots installed on existing water fountains campus wide to: - Encourage the use of re-usable water bottles - Reduce the amount of plastic bottles normally entering the waste stream - Make re-filling easier Unfortunately, some buildings, because of the way they were built, make it impossible to retrofit them with spigots. They are Lutgert and AB7.

Environmental Initiatives Physical Plant Building inspections are performed periodically: Add green checklist to check function & waste Identify areas that could be improved Research alternatives and propose a solution, Experiment with options - learn, grow, modify

Resource Reduction: Solar Compactors Big Belly solar trash compactors have been placed in high traffic areas on campus These compactors reduce the amount of trash collection by at least 4 times The 32 gallon bin can hold 220 gallons of waste fully compacted Animal/pest resistant Source:

Recycling This past year brand new recycling Containers were placed throughout Campus. These containers allow for Paper, cans and bottles to be recycled. However, during the peak hours the Demand is so great, additional, taller Recycling containers to off set the demand. In addition, for easier access, trash bins have been placed along side the recycling in many key areas. Plastic bag containers have also been implemented in Howard Hall and the Campus Support Complex, with very positive results

Recycling What can be recycled on campus? YES Glass (green, brown, clear): Bottles Jars Aluminum: Cans Foil Pie Plates, Cake Pans Metal: Cans: Soup, Juice, Fruit, Vegetable, Pet Food, etc Empty Aerosol Cans Plastic: Any container marked 1-7 Paper: Phone Books, Magazines, and Catalogs Colored Paper and Newspaper Printer/Copy Paper, Folders, and Envelopes Cardboard, Cereal and Microwave Meal Boxes Shoe Boxes Junk Mail Post-It Notes, Business, and Index Cards Carbonless Paper Without a Black Carbon Insert Glass: Medicine Bottles Dishes/Drinking Glasses/Glass cookware (Pyrex) Windows/Mirrors Aluminum: Pots and Pans Cooking Utensils Metal: Silverware Tools License Plates Plastic: Egg Cartons/Styrofoam Straws Plastic Bags (Drop Those off in Howard Hall or the CSC in Bag Recycler!) 16 Electronics Recycling FGCU works in conjunction with Lee County to recycle electronics on campus All electronics are recycled at two different companies in Florida: Creative Recycling Systems, and American Recycling Solutions Both companies disassemble the electronics on site Residual waste is separated and sold or recycled for their value On certain days, you can recycle laptops, TVs, printers, monitors, among others. Source: Erich Tscherteu, Lee County Solid Waste,

CDs Hard Drives Zip disks i-pods Empty print cartridges Cables Cords Examples of e-waste Parts of Circuit Boards Video Tapes PDA s Cell Phones (Make a Difference Printer Cartridges & Cell Phone Recycling) Computers Monitors CPU

Resource Reduction: Smart Strips have been installed in the offices in Physical Plant Smart strips prevent phantom loads from occurring, which reduces electricity. Other departments have followed suit after being informed of electricity saving benefits How does it work? Energy Savings Source:

Energy Savings Occupancy sensors installed in various classrooms on campus. Sensors were recently installed in the Central Energy Plant which is in operation 20 hours a day but not always occupied Sensors time out & turn lights off when no movement is detected after a pre-determined amount of time

Energy Savings Evening & weekend classroom activities and events were consolidated to designated academic buildings over the Summer Semester Physical Plant cycled off mechanical cooling systems in the remaining closed buildings Academic & Event Technology Services implemented an automatic shut-down of all student workstations located in computer classrooms at midnight each evening

Energy Savings Physical Plant implemented a change by raising temperature set points for thermostats across campus to a range The University strongly urges each member of the campus community to take ownership of the facilities to help improve energy efficiency

Resource Reduction: Reclaimed Paper The Physical Plant has been collecting and using reclaimed paper since September, In this time: Approximately 70 reams of paper, or 35,000 sheets have been reclaimed This equates to roughly 4 trees spared per year just from our department! Other departments have followed suit, saving even more resources from being consumed! Source:

University Education Efforts and Compliance: Enhancing Richness and Biodiversity of Campus Treatment and Removal of Invasive Melaleuca Bio-Control Leaf Weevil Melaleuca Psyllid Chemical-Control Brazilian Peppertree Japanese climbing fern West Indian marsh grass Creation and Enhancement of Ecosystems

University Education Efforts and Compliance: Tree Orphanage For years, the Physical Plant has been transplanting trees that were originally in areas that have now been built upon These trees have been moved all over campus, including an area behind Ben Hill Griffin and Howard Halls in an area that has been nicknamed the tree orphanage.
