CRADLE TO CRADLE PRODUCTS INNOVATION CHALLENGE APPLICATION SUMMARY Submissions will be made via the form on the Challenge website. Contest details, official rules, and all documents referenced in this outline can be found at Use this document to prepare your materials before using the application form. Once the application form has been started, it must be completed within 7 days. Eligibility This contest is open to manufacturers with production capabilities and companies with a verified path to production through partnership or other arrangement. The product submitted must be able to be produced. Product has not previously been Cradle to Cradle Certified. All submissions must be in English. Timeline June 30, 2012 Product submission deadline August 15, 2012 Finalists announced (up to 20) November 2013 Final judging and announcement Overview of Cradle to Cradle Design and Certification Cradle to Cradle was developed by Michael Braungart and William McDonough, two pioneers merging intentional design, chemistry and products for industry. Originally used loosely as a term with different meanings as contraindication to cradle to grave, Cradle to Cradle is a beneficial design approach integrating multiple attributes including safe materials, continuous reclamation and re- use of materials, clean water, renewable energy and social fairness. The Cradle to Cradle design principles provide a positive agenda for continuous innovation around the economic, environmental and social issues of human design and use of products and services. Specifically, the purpose of the product certification program is to improve the way we make, use and re- use things recognizing two metabolisms, the biological metabolism and the technical metabolism with a goal to leave a beneficial footprint for human society and the environment. The aim is to set a positive course for product and process design and development in a way that will allow natural and technical systems, products and processes to support the diverse living population on earth. Cradle to Cradle design mirrors the healthy, regenerative productivity of nature, and considers materials as assets not liabilities.
In nature, there is no concept of waste. Everything is effectively food for another organism or system. Materials are reutilized in safe cycles. There are no persistent, bio- accumulative materials that can lead to irreversible changes. The earth accrues biota grown from the energy of the sun. We celebrate the diversity of people and of species. We become native to place, celebrating abundance and honoring every child that is born. In short, the design of goods and provision of services can be achieved with three principles in mind: 1. Eliminate the Concept of Waste Nutrients become nutrients again. All materials are seen as potential nutrients in one of two cycles Technical and Biological cycles. Design materials and products that are effectively food for other systems. This means designing materials and products to be used over and over in either technical or biological systems. Design materials and products that are safe. Design materials and products whose nutrient management system leaves a beneficial legacy economically, environmentally and equitably. Create and participate in systems to collect and recover the value of these materials and products. This is especially important for the effective management of scarce materials. Clean water is vital for humans and all other organisms. Manage influent and effluent water streams responsibly, consider local impacts of water use to promote healthy watersheds and ecosystems. Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) should be sequestered in soil. Our current practice where Carbon dioxide ends up in the oceans and in the atmosphere is a mismanagement of a material. 2. Use Renewable Energy The quality of energy matters. Energy from renewable sources is paramount to effective design. Aligning with Green- e s list of eligible sources, renewable energy sources are solar, wind, hydropower, biomass (when not in competition with food supplies), geothermal, and hydrogen fuel cells. 3. Celebrate diversity Use social fairness to guide a company's operations and stakeholder relationships. Encourage staff participation in creative design and research projects to enhance your Cradle to Cradle story. Technological diversity is key for innovation; explore different options in looking for creative solutions. 2
Support local biodiversity to help your local ecosystem flourish; strive to have a beneficial social, cultural and ecological footprint. Additional Resources: Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the way we make things by William McDonough and Michael Braungart Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute Evaluation Criteria Submissions will be judged on the following criteria Potential to have the most positive and scalable impact on healthy materials for healthy homes; Demonstrate excellence on Cradle to Cradle design criteria; Performance, durability, ease of installation; Affordability; Must be able to qualify for Cradle to Cradle basic certification to be judged but does not have to be certified to be judged or to win; Product has not previously been Cradle to Cradle Certified. Submission Requirements Essay: Up to500 words including: o Tell the story. Describe the problem being solved. What health and environmental issues are being addressed? How does this design solve that? What market are you addressing? How large is the market for this product? o Address the five pillars of Cradle to Cradle design (material health, material reutilization, renewable energy, water stewardship, and social fairness). o Product description. Describe the product application. o Indication of affordability. How does this product price in comparison to similar solutions in the marketplace. Short video or slideshow The 20 finalists videos will be posted and marketed broadly leading up to the final judging. Videos make projects infinitely more compelling, but this doesn t have to be a professional video, simply be personal and talk about your product. No matter how bare- bones or creative you want to get, don't forget the basics Introduce yourself Tell your story (consider including content from your one- page description Ask for people's support Videos must be 1GB or less, not to exceed 3 minutes, and be in one of the following file types: MOV, MPEG, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, FLV 3
Completed Cradle to Cradle Basic Certification packet: o As outlined below. Product Innovation Challenge Minimum Requirements (=Basic Requirements for v3) Material Health The product is 100% characterized by its generic materials and a bill of materials is completed. Download bill of materials from the Challenge website. The product does not contain any Banned List substances. Obtain supplier declarations that confirm that no banned list substances are present in the materials. Download banned list and supplier declarations from the Challenge Website. Material Reutilization In the bill of materials, identify the appropriate metabolism (i.e. Technical or Biological) for each generic material in the product and its components. Renewable Energy & Carbon Management Energy use and carbon emissions relevant to the product are characterized (product allocated scope 1&2 emissions). Refer to the C2C Energy worksheet on the Challenge website. A renewable energy use and carbon management strategy is developed Water Stewardship All applicable effluent quality regulatory compliance thresholds are met Local and business specific water related issues are characterized A statement of water stewardship intentions describing what action is being taken for mitigating identified problems and concern is provided. Social Fairness A streamlined self- audit is conducted to assess protection of fundamental human rights. The Social Hotspots database is an excellent resources: Management procedures aiming to address any identified issues are provided. For more detail on each criteria, view the full C2C Certified Protocol available on the Challenge website. Read and agree to the Official Rules you will be asked to agree to the terms during the submission form. 4
Q&A Make It Right s new web- based laboratory will be the host for all questions and clarifications related to the competition. It will have a standard FAQ surrounding the product challenge, and will be dynamic as participants engage and ask questions. 5
