Cooling Water Intake Debris Management: Hydrilla a New Power Plant Challenge for the Ohio River Basin? Douglas A. Dixon. PhD Technical Executive & Program Manager Hydrilla Workshop The Center for Ohio River Research & Education Thomas More College June 26, 2013

Take Home Message Why is the power industry in the Ohio River Basin concerned with hydrilla? 1. Potential clogging of cooling and service water intakes 2. Impact of hydrilla on Ohio River Ecological Research Program (ORERP) fish population monitoring 2

Overview of Presentation Overview of EPRI Power plant cooling 101 Cooling water intake clogging in the U.S. and around the world EPRI Cooling Water Debris Management Interest Group objectives & activities Hydrilla clogging issues in eastern U.S. Ohio River Ecological Research Program (ORERP) 3

Together Shaping the Future of Electricity EPRI s Mission To conduct research, development and demonstration on key issues facing the electricity sector on behalf of our members, energy stakeholders, and society 4

EPRI History and Key Aspects Founded in 1973 Independent, nonprofit center for public interest energy and environmental research 450+ collaborative participants in more than 40 countries EPRI members generate more than 90% of U.S electricity Major offices in Palo Alto, CA; Charlotte, NC; Knoxville, TN Laboratories in Knoxville, Charlotte and Lenox, MA Collaborative Independent Nonprofit 5

EPRI Debris Management Interest Group Objectives & Deliverables Provide forum for exchange of debris management problems and lessons learned Provide state-of-art information on debris management technology development and debris management issues (including regulatory) Deliverables: Monthly webcasts Quarterly newsletter Annual workshop Updated BMP Report 12

Intake Debris Management is not a New Issue but a Constantly Changing One! Climate change/regional droughts Low water levels New icing patterns Alien species invasions Ecosystem changes Land-use (changing runoff loads) Light penetration (algal growth, increased submerged aquatic vegetation) Unexpected / unexplained episodic biological events 13

ORERP Story in a Nutshell Power companies collaborate to support plant-specific environmental compliance and stewardship Largest industry fish community R&D collaboration in the world ~40 years of fish community monitoring indicates minimal impact of plant cooling operations on fish community and populations 23

What is the ORERP? Long-term (since 1970s) power company sponsored research program assessing impacts of power plant cooling on the Ohio River fish community Not a required permit condition for any of the program s participants This is an above and beyond initiative Research results compliment state- and region-specific research (e.g., ORSANCO, U.S. EPA) 24

What is the Basic Program Scope? Seasonal electrofishing, beach seining and habitat assessment upstream and downstream of each facility 3 times each year Support for graduate research on Ohio River fish community issues Special projects added of interest to collaborative Annual reports for data sharing with resource agencies and public 25
