12 Gas Scrubbing Technologies Absorption The basic process involved in wet scrubbing is the contacting of a polluted gas steam with a scrubbing liquid, with the intention of absorbing sufficient of the pollutants into the liquid stream to allow discharge to atmosphere of the cleaned gas. Similarly, in Biological scrubbing the contaminated gas stream is passed through a biologically active packed bed, where the pollutants are degraded by microorganisms in a water film. Adsorption In adsorption, gaseous components are removed from an effluent gas stream by adhering to the surface of a solid. Destruction Is defined as a high-temperature oxidation process in which oxygen in the air attacks waste molecules, converting them into simpler substances such as carbon dioxide and water.
