28 th SICOMP Conference on Manufacturing and Design of Composites, 1-2 June 2017, Piteå, Sweden Structural carbon fibre from kraft lignin Peter Mannberg, Swerea SICOMP

Carbon fibre

Carbon fibre composite

Carbon fibre from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) - OIL

Carbon fibre from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) OIL Nonrenewable source

Oil was once wood

Lets skip the step renewable resources to oil Millions of years

Composition of wood

We want: Carbon fibres Make use of renewable resources

We have: LignoBoost commercial process for separation of lignin from pulping liquor 2 commercial LignoBoost plants USA and Finland Lignin capacity: t/y Successful melt spinning of pure softwood and hardwood lignin Conversion of 100 % softwood lignin multifilaments to carbon fibres

We want = we can: Carbon fibres Make use of renewable resources

Why lignin-based carbon fibre? Demand for cost-efficient carbon fibres. Bio-based is a plus Increased replacement of steel with carbon fibre composites in cars Decreased weight and fuel/electricity consumption of the car fleet

Why lignin-based carbon fibre? Demand for cost-efficient carbon fibres. Bio-based is a plus Increased replacement of steel with carbon fibre composites in cars Decreased weight and fuel/electricity consumption of the car fleet GreenLight

GreenLight Project goal Demonstrate the viability of the processing of lignin into carbon fibre (CF) and CF structural composites with customized features (lightness, strength, costeffectiveness) for the automotive industry that can replace the CF produced with petroleum-based raw materials. Budget 2.6 M (Financing: 50% EU, 50% Södra) Coordinator RISE Duration 1 July June 2019 This project has received funding from the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No

Consortium RISE (Coordinator) Södra FIBRE (Faserinstitut Bremen) Fourné Machinenbau STFI (Saechsisches Textilforschungsinstitut) SWEREA Sicomp NetComposites Blatraden CRF (Centro Ricerche Fiat)

The GreenLight value chain Renewable raw material Kraft pulp mill Lignin recovery End use CF reinforced polymer Lignin-based CF 16

GreenLight Challenges Melt spinning of lignin in large pilot scale Properties and processability Achieve good enough carbon fibre strength for car applications A complete lignin-based carbon fibre concept in pilot scale

The GreenLight Status Primary target: robust melt spinning at 1000 filaments from an economically viable lignin completed at 48 filament scale, 1000 scale in development Target properties: 1.7 GPa tensile strength, 170 GPa modulus, > 1% extension 70 % of target using basic conversion rates without controlled tensioning Target cost of production: 20 % of PAN Carbon Fibre production cost Currently unknown, but potential cost reduction efforts for conversion are examined Target cost of lignin: lowest possible (including extrusion) Lignin preparation schemes are developed with potential cost elements in mind Technoeconomic evaluation calculations suggest we are doing well but this is market dependent (performance, cost, profit, balance ) 18

The GreenLight Status - Filaments 19

The GreenLight Status Carbon filaments 20

The GreenLight next steps Lignin production at the ton scale Continued efforts to further improve lignin for melt spinning Melt spinning progression at the 1000 filament scale Optimisation of conversion parameters Bench scale tensioned conversion and pilot continuous conversion 21
