Denton, Texas is a vibrant, fast-growing city in north section of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex Ranked in the top 25 of the fastest growing cities in the nation; 2000 to 2008 growth rate of 48.3% 2008 population estimate of 119,454; plus over 50,000 college students attending local schools including: Texas Woman s University, the nation s largest public university primarily for women University North Texas, the flagship university of the UNT System with over 36,000 students Denton hosts many well-attended festivals and events in cooperation with various organizations, local universities and the parks department 10
The City of Denton is one of the top 10 power purchasers in Texas and a customer focused organization Denton Municipal Electric (DME) is owned by the residents of the City of Denton DME leadership values customer satisfaction: Proud to consistently offer low electricity rates to the citizens of Denton Strive to provide first-rate service with quick response times Committed to environmental responsibility and consumer feedback 11
In 2004, DME surveyed its customers to gauge their interest in green power Survey results showed a very strong approval for renewable energy Customers however, did not want their rates to increase In 2005, DME introduced Green Sense, a voluntary green power utility program Green Sense Program: 100% green power option.01 cents extra per kwh; six-month agreement term Sources include solar, wind, geothermal and wind Participation rates remains low with a less than one percent subscriber rate 12
Beyond Green Sense, DME leadership still saw the importance of green power for Denton DME leadership continued to search for ways to support green power, understanding: It was good for the Denton community Customers heartily embraced it (if rates remained unaffected) Texas RPS mandates were on the horizon A strong sustainability program could boost energy efficiency efforts Light bulb / Ah-ha moment for DME leadership came while driving past the NextEra Energy Wind Center at Wolf Ridge 13
DME leadership engaged with NextEra Energy Resources, owners of a nearby wind farm Working together, the parties were able to originate a deal that would provide 40% green power to Denton without increasing electricity rates As an important emotional element, NextEra Energy guaranteed to direct 100% of the revenue from the green power portion of the deal to its EarthEra program, where 100% of funds are used to build more renewable energy DME/NextEra Energy provided a wind farm tour to major Denton decision makers and city council once the deal was executed 14
Denton s 40% Green theme designed to educate and activate customers After the purchase, Denton positioned the city as "40%" green 40% theme is part of a comprehensive city energy strategy DME employed a special 40% logo on signage, fleet vehicles and collateral 15
Educate and Activate: Denton's "Environmental Leadership Sustainability" campaign Denton's "Environmental Leadership Sustainability" promotion builds on 40% theme: Raises awareness about the city s large green power purchase Promotes energy efficiency programs including free energy audits, solar rebate programs, etc. Promotes Denton as a "green city" for economic benefit DME created a nice PSA commercial that airs in local movie theaters, city websites and on local cable DME uses Facebook and has reached out to NGO s like NRDC to share their story 16
DME engages with customers at many local events/festivals to promote energy efficiency program Well attended Denton events include: Arts, Antiques & Autos; Cinco de Mayo; Denton Arts & Jazz Festival; Denton Blues Festival; Dog Days of Summer; North Texas State Fair & Rodeo, Holiday Lighting; etc. 17
18
Results: The green power purchase and campaign has become a proud and effective marketing tool for Denton DME's free thermal imaging audits are up 20 percent GreenSense Rebate Program rebate program for energy efficiency improvements in homes and businesses hit the $300,000 mark this year DME has partnered with the local Home Chemical Collection ReUse store to offer free CFL bulbs to Denton residents and has distributed more than 15,000 CFLs to date The Chamber of Commerce is leveraging the green city tag to attract business to Denton and now holds an annual Green Business Conference The larger City of Austin has even asked (smaller) Denton for assistance in promoting green power! Results of a June 10 customer satisfaction survey show that 85 percent of customers thought being 40% renewable was important And a total of 89 percent believe DME is an extremely (47%) or very important (41%) asset for the community 19
