What is Horizon 2020? The new EU framework Programme for Research & Innovation - A Strategy for Growth & Jobs Horizon 2020 the Euratom Programme Euratom Research and Training Programme Years Integral part of Horizon 2020 (one part on fission, one on fusion) General objective for fission: Improve nuclear safety, security & radiation protection
Specific objectives for Indirect Actions (fission): H2020 Calls for proposals (DG RTD) Support safe operation of nuclear systems; Contribute to development of solutions for the management of ultimate waste; Support development and sustainability of nuclear expertise and excellence in the EU; Support radiation protection and development of medical applications; Promote innovation and industrial competitiveness Ensure availability and use of research infrastructures wp1415-euratom_en.pdf
Specific objectives for Indirect Actions (fission): H2020 Calls for proposals (DG RTD) Support safe operation of nuclear systems: NFRP : Improved safety design and operation of fission reactors NFRP : Tool for the fast and reliable prediction of severe accident progression and anticipation of the source term of a nuclear accident NFRP : New innovative approaches to reactor safety NFRP : Supporting the licensing of Western nuclear fuel for reactors of VVER design operating in the EU
EURATOM JRC Direct Actions Key Objectives within Horizon 2020: 1. Improve nuclear safety including: reactor and fuel safety, waste management & decommissioning, and emergency preparedness; 2. Improve nuclear security: nuclear safeguards, non-proliferation, combating illicit trafficking, nuclear forensics; 3. Raising Excellence in the nuclear science base for standardisation; 4. Foster knowledge management, education and training; 5. Support the policy of the Union on nuclear safety and security
EURATOM JRC Direct Actions Key Objectives within Horizon 2020: Two examples 1. Improve nuclear safety including: reactor and fuel safety, waste management & decommissioning, and emergency preparedness Nuclear reactor safety a. Collection, analysis, and assessment of nuclear power plants operational experience worldwide, and dissemination to the Member States' regulatory authorities; Nuclear emergency preparedness and response (EP&R), environmental monitoring and radiation protection a. Research into severe accident modelling, radiological source term evaluation and accident management of NPPs, in coordination with EU Member States activities;
EU Clearinghouse 8 European Clearinghouse for NPP Operating Experience The European Clearinghouse on NPP Operating Experience is a centralized initiative requested and at the service of European Nuclear Safety Authorities and DG ENER, to improve the use of Operating Experience (OE) from Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) Clearinghouse activities: Improving the exchange of OE information - diffusion of knowledge, excellence (best practices) and lessons learnt from OE Performing additional in depth analyses on dedicated OE topics Topical studies Sharing expertise and OE Feedback tools with the Clearinghouse members Strengthening existing resources on OE All the EU regulators with NPPs are now participating (+Switzerland) Contributing to the development of expertise and knowledge in the field of OE 8
NURAM JRC Nuclear Reactor Accident analyses and Modelling group (NURAM): KO Multi-Annual JRC WP Nuclear emergency preparedness and response (EP&R), environmental monitoring and radiation protection a. Research into severe accident modelling, radiological source term evaluation and accident management of NPPs, in coordination with EU Member States activities; Severe Accident Research NETwork of excellence + Many others 9
NURAM JRC institutional work on Severe Accident : Work on ASTEC (Accident Source Term Evaluation Code) Reference European code developed by IRSN/GRS for Severe Accident Analyses and Source Term evaluation on Light Water Reactors (LWRs) Direct collaboration between JRC-IET and IRSN for ASTEC V2 validation ("software agreement in kind contribution") Validation of ASTEC V2.0 rev 3 and ASTEC V2.1 on several STORM and FARO experiments Plant application for ASTEC and comparison with MAAP4 and MAAP5 Uncertainties analyses with SUNSET
NURAM 11 ( ) Main Targets: 1) Enhancement of ASTEC models for Severe Accident Management strategies relevant to Fukushima accidents, and associated validation 2) Development of "Reference Datasets" and associated documentation for the main generic types of European NPPs JRC is leading the WP40 on Plant applications and Severe Accident Management 19 partners from Germany (GRS, USTUTT, RUB, KIT), France (IRSN, AREVA,EDF), Slovakia (VUJE, IVS), Hungary (NUBIKI), Spain (CIEMAT), Lithuania (LEI), Italy (ENEA), Bulgaria (INRNE), Slovenia (IJS), Finland (VTT), Switzerland (PSI), India (BARC), EC (JRC-IET)
