9 Energy costs are rising. Energy Metering and Management And the initiatives to reduce a building s overall carbon footprint are as well. What can we do? The answer: An Energy Management Program. There are many aspects involved in an energy management program. Cooling and heating a campus, commercial building, or other large facility can represent over 33% of total energy consumption. Thermal energy measurements are required to properly assess energy consumption, as well as control the distribution of chilled and hot water.

10 Energy Metering and Management How does thermal energy metering work? The management of thermal energy (cooling and heating) in a building is accomplished through sub-metering and main chiller systems metering. With sub meters on each floor or for each tenant, building owners can determine where the most energy is being consumed and pass along costs or work to reduce energy costs. Steam, hot water and cool water is pumped into a building via a central heater/chiller or the district energy utility. Flowmeters and temperature sensors can measure the flow and Delta T to calculate BTU s consumed. A meter system by floor or by tenanted space will allow developers /managers/engineers to allocate costs, or identify consumption issues.

11 Energy Metering and Management There are two steps to determining how much energy is consumed in the heating or cooling of a facility. Say you have a high rise building that you need to cool. You ve got chillers generating cold water to circulate throughout the building in a closed loop. Water is pumped into the building at 24 degrees, and returns to the chiller at 52 degrees. To find out how much energy was consumed, you need to measure the flow and temperature of the chilled water as it enters the building, as well as the temperature of the water as it returns (the flow should be constant, since this is a closed loop). So, in order to determine the energy consumption, you need to measure flow and Delta T to calculate KW s consumed.

12 Energy Metering and Management You know when you are consuming the most energy, when you are not, and exactly what it is costing you. With that information, you can determine what you need to change to lower your energy costs. But, that s only half the story. You may have multiple tenants in your building, and want to charge them based on their energy consumption. Even if the entire building is the same organisation, you want to know where your greatest energy consumption is, so you can manage it. That s where main and sub-metering comes in.

13 Energy Metering and Management Sub-metering gives you the precision that you need to pinpoint exactly where you are consuming the most energy to either pass along the costs, or take steps to lower energy consumption. So, if you place flowmeters and temperature sensors at each floor, and use the same calculation, you can better determine those areas of energy consumption. Distribution can then be monitored throughout a building, providing the necessary data for: optimisation balancing billing development of a strategy to reduce consumption

14 Energy Metering and Management Thermal energy calculators are ideal as a stand-alone device. It takes an input from a flow meter along with the supply and return temperature of the chilled water (CHW) or hot water (HW) to provide a thermal energy output. The benefit of a stand-alone thermal energy calculator is it allows the end user to pair it with any flow meter (e.g. Magnetic, Clamp, DP) giving the flexibility to apply the appropriate flow meter technology to various CHW and HW measurements (e.g. new installation, existing, etc.).

15 Thermal Energy Metering AUS Standards There are no Australian standards but EN1434 standard is commonly adopted/referenced Accuracy based classification - energy Class 1 ±1% Class 2 ± 2% Class 3 ± 3% Temperature ±0.5% (can be larger at high differentials)

16 Thermal Energy Metering AUS Standards The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division within the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement. There are no current NMI Pattern Approval Requirements:... at this time NMI has no formal requirements regarding the pattern approval and verification of thermal energy meters (a.k.a. heat meters)

17 NABERS NABERS is a national rating system that measures the environmental performance of Australian buildings, tenancies and homes. NABERS measures the energy efficiency, water usage, waste management and indoor environment quality of a building or tenancy and its impact on the environment and its performance is rated on a 1-6 star scale.

27 Dry Coupling Flexim s Permanent Coupling Foil The transducer must make direct contact with the pipe without the presence of bubbles. Historically, this was achieved using a silicon gel. Unfortunately, this gel slowly evaporated and needed to be re-applied. Transducer Pipe Non-Liquid Coupling Foil Flexim now employ a dry coupling using a Viton pad. This means that the transducer can be installed underneath insulation without ever needing maintenance the system is truly maintenance-free! 28
