DadePaper is a chapter member of the USGBC, a participant in the EPA s WasteWise Program and regularly participates in green communitybased programs at a local level. DadePaper recognizes and supports the growing need for environmentally preferable product options. Our Greensafe Program is a comprehensive supply chain management program including consulting, product sourcing, fulfillment and procedural training designed to help businesses reach their sustainability goals. Products meeting certain criteria are included in the Greensafe Program. These criteria include 3rd party certification, EPA compliance, sustainable raw material sources and disposal pathways. (See glossary below for more information.) ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials): A globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards including those for biodegradability and compostability. Bagasse: The biomass remaining from sugarcane processing which can be used to make fiber for foodservice packaging. Biobased: Materials that are organic in nature. Biodegradable: Materials that are organic liquids or solids, which will degrade as a result of natural bacterial activity under specific conditions with exposure to oxygen, water and light. Compostable: Materials that are solid biodegradable substances that decay into nutrient rich, reusable material under controlled conditions such as a commercial composting facility. DfE: Design for the Environment, the U.S. EPA s certification system for environmentally preferable products. a reduced impact on the environment compared to other products intended for the same use. Green Cleaning: The practice of using facility maintenance products and procedures that protect human health and do not harm the environment. Greensafe: DadePaper s exclusive customer service program including various value added services to assist customers in meeting their green supply systems goals. Green Seal: An independent organization that certifies products, which are determined to be environmentally preferable. LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a voluntary consensus-based national standard developed by the USGBC for rating buildings. PLA (Poly Lactic Acid): Starch based material that can be processed into fiber and film used for foodservice packaging. EcoLogo: An independent organization that certifies products, which are determined to be environmentally preferable. EPA: Environmental Protection Agency, a federally funded agency working to protect human health and the environment. EPA Compliant: Products that meet EPA guidelines for recycled content. EPP: Environmentally Preferable Products, those products that have RRR Rapidly Renewable Resource: Raw materials that grow, or renew, in less than 10 years. SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative): An independent organization that certifies forestry practices to insure they are being managed in a sustainable manner. USGBC: The United States Green Building Council, a coalition of building industry professionals working to promote environmentally responsible, healthy facilities. 2

3 Greensafe for Facilities Maintenance Green cleaning is one of the easiest steps a business can take to reduce their facility s impact on the environment as well as create a safer, healthier building for occupants. Green cleaning products are effective and cost neutral.
