1 The Future of Self-Tinting Glazing Christopher D. Anderson, Ph.D. Pleotint, LLC 17 May 2016 FMA Spring Conference

2 Why Using Glass Is So Important Using Glass for People: Connection to the outdoors Views of the environment Allows in natural light Sense of well-being/health

3 Traditional Glass Requires Compromises Heat, Glare and Energy In a continuously changing environment, traditional glass is static Compromises must be made when using traditional glass to determine the tradeoff between light transmission and heat Solutions to traditional glass problems are inefficient and unappealing

4 Compromises for Traditional Glass

5 Complications with Traditional Compromises Shades stay shut. In a study by the USGBC, shades remained shut 59% of the time in 75% of buildings studied. This makes preplanned daylighting irrelevant since natural light is not being utilized as expected. Building performance also suffers or is lower than planned if blinds stay shut. Blinds are costly to maintain.

6 Aggregated Interior Illuminance, Lux (Millions) Why Glass Must Be Used Properly Room Illuminance by Month Importance of Lighting Efficiency Year-Round Glazing that is efficient in one season might not be efficient in a different season. The demands and intensity of the sun changes which can completely flood an area with too much daylight, heat and glare. Data: 40% Fixed Tint Skylight in Houston, TX West Orientation Having the right glass technology in place will allow the glass to adapt to the environment.

8 What is Dynamic Glass? Morning Dynamic Glass is glass that changes visible light transmission and solar heat gain properties under the application of voltage, light or heat. Afternoon Evening

9 Dynamic Glass Technologies Dynamic Glass, also known as smart glass, is glass or glazing that changes light transmission properties under the application of voltage, light or heat. Video: Suntuitive Self-tinting Glass, South-facing

17 Impact of Glazing on Productivity Personnel is the largest expense of a building Productivity costs are 112 times greater than energy costs in the workplace. 1 The smartest investment is an investment in employees, their productivity, and their overall satisfaction. 1 Cost Per Sq. Ft. of a Building Self-tinting Dynamic Glass will: Increase comfort Optimize daylight Reduce solar heat gain Reduce noise Preserve the view Increase health & well-being Salaries Rent & Mortgage Energy Increasing Occupant Well-being = Increased Productivity = Greater ROI 1. 21 Self-tinting Dynamic Glass Provides Design Freedom Suntuitive Glass can be used with: Monolithic, Insulated, or Triple pane Any thickness of glass Any tint or color of glass Any shape/pattern of window High performance Low-e(s) Warm edge spacers Gas fill

22 Construction Considerations Vertical Construction Dynamic Interlayer The active component of Selftinting Dynamic Glass is in the PVB interlayer. It is not a coating or aftermarket product.

23 Suntuitive Test Results CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Laminated Glass Tests ASTM E1866 & E1996 Hurricane Tests UL 972 Forced Entry Anticipated Miami-Dade approval for one window manufacturer, other manufacturers at earlier stages

24 Suntuitive Glass, bird-friendly Suntuitive Glass - bird-friendly, dynamic, self-tinting Suntuitive Glass is Dynamic Bird-Friendly Glass. After thoroughly testing Suntuitive Glass the American Bird Conservatory has found it to be effective to help stop birds hitting windows. Presently Self Tinting Suntuitive Glass is the only Dynamic Glass on the market to carry the Bird-Friendly label. Suntuitive Glass also has a low Material Threat Factor, enabling it to meet requirements for LEED Pilot Credit 55: Bird Collision Deterrence, which recognizes creatively designed buildings that deter bird collisions.

30 Appearance of Self-tinting Glass We considered using permanently tinted windows, fritted glass, and mechanical shades, but the self-tinting glass offered the advantages of each without any compromises. The glass naturally adjusts to provide the perfect tint to counteract outside conditions, while allowing the glass to be clear at night. Senior Project Architect

36 Installations Cinco Ranch Houston area in TX We were considering other dynamic glass technologies, but what attracted us to Suntuitive glass was its simplicity. Because the glass passively adapts throughout the day, we do not have to worry about constantly adjusting the tint levels or shades in various rooms. 43 How Does Suntuitive Work? Suntuitive Self-tinting Glass gradually darken in response to rising temperatures caused by direct sunlight on the window. As the sun moves across the sky, Suntuitive will cool and return to its clear state. At night or in cloudy conditions, when direct sun is not present, Suntuitive remains clear and allows the most natural daylight possible. Suntuitive naturally and passively adapts throughout the day, every day of the year, constantly balancing the heat and glare coming into your building. What is the composition of Suntuitive? Suntuitive is made of polyvinyl butyral ( PVB ), the main component in safety glass, and Pleotint s secret sauce Suntuitive cannot be applied as an aftermarket product

44 Overall Typical Construction

45 Daylighting with Dynamic Glass Window shows the contrast of tinting, focusing on the window sill on the interior.. 1. When Suntuitive is Fully Tinted, the room will be at its brightest, as shown 2. When Suntuitive is fully clear, there is less daylighting.
