05/11/2014 PERSAM A software tool for calculating PECs in soils Ingeborg Joris, Lieve Decorte, Stijn Van Looy, Wim Peelaerts (VITO) Mark Egsmose, Christopher Lythgo (EFSA) 7th EU Modelling Workshop Vienna October 2014
Background» General context : assessment of active substances and metabolites in the context of approval at EU level, more specifically the exposure assessment of soil organisms to PPPs and their transformation products according to Regulation EC 1107/2009 Scientific Opinion on the science behind the guidance for scenario selection and scenario parameterisation for predicting environmental concentrations of PPPs in soil EFSA, 2012 PERSAM SANCO Guidance Document on persistence in soil (SANCO/9188VI/1997) 2000 Draft EFSA Guidance Document for predicting environmental concentrations of active substances of PPPs and transformation products of these active substances in soil EFSA, 2014 Together with release of PERSAM in public consultation 05/11/ , VITO NV
Tiered approach for persistence in soil SIMPLE CALCULATION MORE CONSERVATIVE INCREASING COMPLEXITY HIGHER DATA NEED PERSAM Scientific Opinion on the science behind the guidance for scenario selection and scenario parameterisation for predicting environmental concentrations of plant protection products in soil (EFSA, 2012)
PERSAM development The aims and objectives of the project are to develop a software tool for calculating the PECs of substances and their transformation products in soil in support of the EFSA Guidance. Scientific background of tiered approach Analytical model & scenario parameterisation Testing of software Software development Technical support for the user 05/11/ , VITO NV
The PERSAM software» Persistence in Soil Analytical Model (PERSAM) calculates 90th percentile exposure concentrations in total soil and in the soil liquid phase for use in exposure assessment of soil organisms to pesticides» Stand alone software» Distributed through the JRC website; available for registered users» PERSAM calculates:» TIER 1 Predicted Environmental concentrations» TIER 2B 90th percentile PEC s» TIER 2C 90th percentile PEC s (using the soil load including wash off from TIER 2A output)» Supports selection of the grid cell corresponding to the 90th percentile PEC as needed for TIER 3B» Spray applications to annual crops for conventional and reduced tillage 05/11/ , VITO NV
PERSAM start screen
Fixed parameters andsettings Fixed parameters Settings selection of zones and endpoints (all tiers) + selection of crop (Tier 2B, 2C, 3) + selection of export of maps (Tier 2B, 2C) + fraction that reaches the soil (Tier 2C)
Definition of substances
TIER 1 Calculation
TIER 2b Calculations
TIER 2c Calculations
TIER 3b Calculations
Reporting 05/11/ , VITO NV
Validation of PERSAM» Results compared to independent calculations from members of the WG on Soil PECs» TIER 1: results for 19 example substances, 2 endpoints (C total and C liquid ), 3 zones (North, Centre, South), 3 averaging times (peak, TWA 14d and TWA 56d) and 2 ecotoxicological averaging depths (1 and 20 cm)» TIER 1: example for 2 metabolites» TIER 2B: comparison of actual maps and CDFs + spatial percentiles in 3 steps covering 3 zones, 6 crops, 2 endpoints and 2 depths => at the end of the testing PERSAM reproduced exactly indepent results» Calculations are considered robust» In all considered cases: consistency in tiered approach is maintained 05/11/ , VITO NV
Helpdesk 05/11/ , VITO NV
Helpdesk JRC helpdesk Content-related issues technical issues EFSA VITO Following information is required for reporting a problem: What is your operating system and version number? Where is the PERSAM directory located: on the disk of your pc or on a network disk? Do you have administrator rights on your pc? If not, what rights do you have? Please, give a detailed description of the different steps you've done before the problem popped up. Deliver also the log file 'PERSAM.log', which you can find in the directory where you've installed the PERSAM software. 05/11/ , VITO NV
